I'm fully in the Thompson camp. McCain's support of the immigration deal was the last straw for me.

Wow, that actually really encourages me. The Post is SCARED of Thompson. I don't mind that most of his politics are similar to McCain's, I agree with most of what McCain says. And the fact that he isn't a career politician is a positive, rather than a negative, in my book. Eric, his health is fine--he has a type of cancer that won't affect his ability to perform the job in any way.
Thompson is a VERY moderate Republican. The casting of he and Romney as traditional GOPers means the GOP base is running from its traditional platform.
He's a small-government federalist who is very strong on abortion, gun rights, the economy, and other key issues. The GOP's "traditional platform" is not defined as "Bush's second term".
Maybe, but that's skewed for a couple reasons--first, it gives the same weight to the key issues (national defense, abortion, gun rights, the economy) that it does to things like drug laws; second, its reasoning for his answers on a few of the questions is iffy (for instance, it claims he favors "Replacing US troops with UN in Iraq" and cites 6 votes on completely unrelated bills as reasoning, and despite the fact that he's said publically that we need to stay the course in Iraq).
We can't afford not to. Here's why. http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2007_05/011341.php Iraq is becoming both a training center and a fundraising center for AQ, which has been able to reconstitute itself due to the Stupid Pointless War. Frankly, anyone who wants us to stay now is stupid or hates America.
If he supports staying the course in Iraq, then I can't support him. I no longer believe pulling out equates to Al Qaeda conquest of the country. Let the former Baathists and Mahdi Army take care of foreign jihadis in Iraq.
I want Thompson to run if for no other reason than to add more legitimate candidates to the pool. I'm not too hot on any of the ones in the hunt so far from either/any party.
I completely agree with that as I'm very uncomfortable with the low quality of Republican candidates, but I'm afraid he could win.

Justifying the mistake of invading Iraq is the primary reason why we're still there. I really hope we can reach a political consensus about leaving Iraq in the post-Bush era.
I just looked up his wikipedia because I was prepared to dismiss him as being too old. For whatever reason, I have my own age litmus test, because I always vote as if I am voting for an eight year term. Dude is only 64. Doesn't he seem older than that? By contrast, McCain is already 71. Therefore, Thompson could end his presidency about the same age as McCain would be going into his. Still, if you put them side by side, I'm guessing they are the same age. I need to hear more from him, particularly on iraq.
Someone sold you a clever talking point. Can we afford to keep paying hundreds of billions year after year?
Whether or not one agrees with your comment, it doesn't address the issue of it not being a conservative position.
