1st Reuben I ever had included a slice of tongue that I got in Shaker Heights, Ohio. I still remember it from 1961.
Got a call at 6AM from my son back in Pittsfield Ma Telling me about this great bakery in La Jolla Ca. Where he got the info....no clue. Of course I have to make the 50 mi r/t to see if their sourdough bread is as good as touted. For starters I got a parking space in front of the place which is unheard of in Ca. I got in line behind 30 +/- others [10 AM] and slowly made my way into the sales area that is about 6' x 10'....1 guy filling order...1 guy on register. Got 2 lb Sourdough and 2 choc croissants $20 [+$10 petrol]. When leaving there were 30 more people in line. Next time I'll call for a pickup. Wayfarer Bakery.
When I was there 20-something years ago, I went to a bakery that had a sourdough starter from like the mid 1800s. But that's nothing. The XBox inventor revived 4,500 yr old sourdough and made some bread https://globalnews.ca/news/5736305/yeast-egyptian-sourdough-4500-years-old/
It shows how much American tastes have changed in 50 years that this was advertised as borderline special

Oh joy, oh rapture!!! Two days ago I went to the Costco Business Ctr where I scored a 2 lb pkg of thinly sliced med-rare pastrami. I haven't had anything like this since I left my taste buds in NYC. I sense many Rachels for me 'n my Billie in the near future. Ps...of course I've conducted a taste test!!!
