It's a friendly. My Sad Bois co-host was also going crazy over why he thought he needed to go to Kankakee tonight.
Steel City's home stadium is the one in downtown Joliet where the baseball team (Slammers?) play or played. I guess they play some home games in Kankakee.
Just got back from watching a House victory. It was fun. Got to chat with Peter Wilt for a bit. They have some talent on their roster.
It is interesting to see two really inexperienced teams go at it. Neither team would pick up a point in the Euro. US did what England could not, score very on and hang on for the entire game. Of course, Canada is not Italy. That was not a good game today, not at all.
Nope. CONCACAF is more than a bit of a joke. I guess the Gold Cup is fun as so many of the teams are awful, but game to play, and the "great" teams in the tournament (US and Mexico, to an extent Costa Rica, Jamaica, Honduras) are barely competent, so there is always a possibility of upsets. It has not happened this tournament as all 8 teams that will advance were set prior to the third round of games. All that matters is which team will be first and which will be second. However, only the US and Mexico have ever won it (since it was changed to the Gold Cup in 1991).
Own Goals for the Chicago Red Stars is now the joint golden boot leader of the NWSL. Also, they are now in first with a GD of -4. Something Stupid Always Happens.
Yes. You are correct. 2000 was the only year that neither Mexico nor the US won. Also, neither made the final, which was Canada and Colombia.
Canada v. Japan in women's Olympic soccer. 1-0 in the second half. Tanaka's penalty saved. The Japanese goalkeeper with a nightmare between the 58th amd 62nd minute. Fumbled the ball into the Goal. Goal called back. Fumbled the ball and the Canadian player had an open net, but passed the ball. Richard Sanchez-esque. Sould be 3-0. Japan ties it up.
US v. New Zealand Olympics super early this morning (well, I recorded it). (I probably don't have to mention this is women's soccer, since the pathetic US men's team failed to qualify) The Red Stars well represented with Naeher, Davidson, and Ertz starting. Krueger came on as a sub. Former Red Stars heart throb Cristen Press scored an excellent goal to make it 4-1. She had a second chance that Ms. Own Goal converted, for her second of the match. The USWNT had four goals called back for offsides in the first half. That must be some sort of record.
A record for stupidity. The one where Lloyd made a flat run two yards behind the last defender and the ball was still delivered, that was special stupidity. Runner up was the Dahlkemper shinned clearance that led to the New Zealand goal. This group has had a historic run, but Father Time remains undefeated and no one in the coaching hierarchy has the huevos to break it to them. It's not just the eroding ability, but some of them look like they have more important things to do than play soccer. The world has caught up and this USWNT iteration must be on their A game the rest of the way, catch some teams off their game, and catch most of the breaks to advance to the medal round/semi-final. They're running into a likely quarterfinal against the Netherlands and a semifinal against Brazil, or Great Britain all of whom are playing top quality futbol.
