A high school/college friend took up rugby at NIU. He was a 6'1" wide receiver in HS & a rugby union fullback. He made one of the most vicious tackles I ever saw running full speed into a Chicago Lions ball carrier and popped the ball at least 10 feet in the air. Later that game his rugby career ended when he tore up his knee.
Played flanker or eighth man, tackling was my strength. Broke lower leg, left ankle and tore ligaments on a multi-player collision/tackle. Two operations and two years later I was back 90%, but no more rugby for me.
I was in my 20’s. Six months before I got married but I was mobile for it. Played softball, refereed soccer later after recovery.
