Only problem is that we all know that the Union brass will now have the interns buy an amazing trophy case on Craigslist to be positioned in the office near Curtin, and it will guarantee that he remains manager for the next decade.
The next step in Jim's evolution is whether he can get the team to win big games, and important games on the road. So far he has not shown that.
Hopefully this next evolutionary step won’t take nearly as long as his prior ones! Seems like it took forever to improve his substitutions, mid-game tactics, etc. Plus, you’d think that after Open Cup finals, playoff games, and his own long playing career that he’d have a little more of a knack for big game mental preparation.
His substitutions were fairly predictable once again this season (you could still set your watch to Ilsinho coming on in the 60th minute). The difference is that now he has much better subs to bring on than in the past, so they actually had a chance of making a difference.
I've come around on the guy because I've witnessed his growth. True or false? Jim Curtin is a better manager than Gregg Berhalter.
I guess this should go here? Pat Noonan is currently in Utah for a second interview for #RSL’s open head coaching position, sources tell @TheAthleticSCCR. Noonan has been an assistant in Philadelphia (#DOOP) since 2018 and previously coached with Bruce Arena at LA Galaxy and the USMNT.— Jeff Rueter (@jeffrueter) September 20, 2021 And FCC has spoken to Albright about there GM opening https://theathletic.com/2832671/202...-why-nycfc-signed-a-14-year-old-mls-notebook/
Just making sure this doesn't drop too far down the threads list. This is Philly after all. With nothing else to read about the Union it's interesting to view some of the old posts.
This a nice interview with Curtin https://www.inquirer.com/soccer/jim-curtin-philadelphia-union-20220224.html He may not have been the coach the fanbase wanted when he was promoted.......but he's turned out to be exactly the coach the Union needed.
From a Tweet by Matthew De George following the U's 6-0 thrashing of Colorado: - Tonight was Jim Curtin 113th career coaching win in MLS. Ties Ben Olsen for 9th all time - Union are 11 games over .500 for the first time in franchise history
In case anyone was wondering: Philadelphia Union All Time 421 Games Played 157 Wins 151 Losses 113 Draws 600 Goals Scored 557 Goals Against +43 Goal Differential 581 Points 1.38 Points Per Game Jim Curtin All Time Record 273 Games 113 Wins 91 Losses 69 Draws 426 Goals Scored 355 Goals Against +71 Goal Differential At least according to the workbook I created, which may or may not be 100% accurate. I may have the 2020 stats wrong. 404 Points 1.48 Points Per game
The soccer gods have long memories. Payback for subbing Blake out and McCarthy in for PKs in US Open Cup years ago. This is all on Curtin. Maybe next year we win it all now that we have that out of our system.
The Union are close and have been close for a while, but they're going to need a couple replacements and dare I say upgrades for that to happen.
That's absolutely true, but I have a blind faith that Ernst Tanner will dig up somebody I've never heard of from some about-to-be-relegated team from Sokovia's second division or something. Big shoes to fill, though, for sure.
The Athletic just posted that he has been signed thru 2026 season. Looked back and this thread was started 9 years ago.
