Looks like the Union will keep with tradition and hire within. Welcome to August 1. The Union officially don’t have a sporting director at this hour. I am told that they know who they want, it’s an external hire, and contract talks are in the final stages. I have a hunch they’ve gone to Europe for the hire. Hopefully I’ll know more soon.— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) August 1, 2018
Don't tease, or I'll be forced to bring the t-shirt back. https://www.instagram.com/p/BewuEC4BmT-/ Love how the videos are posted on July 31, but already titled "former".
I didn't remember seeing this thread so I had to go look for it in case it didn't get created yet + bump.
Emphasizing winning. That should make some in the fan base happy at least. Curtin back on a one year deal.
One less thing he has to look at, I'd guess. This frees up his time to find players he wants for his system, without worrying about another large part of the puzzle. ETA - Sounds like he is going to be doing all the legwork around other Continents to scout. Another sad part of Sugarman's closed pockets. Wish we had more people to do that networking, allowing Tanner to stay Stateside and evaluate as the reports come in.
Spoke about needing a plan A, B, & C. Tactical and formational flexibility. Sounded like e wants the Union to play more like RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg.
So I got to watch the show. 2? strikers? I found the more direct matter of fact euro style of communication refreshing.
Yeah, I was fooled by that once... http://www.philly.com/philly/sports...tewart_behind_the_Union_s_culture_change.html Talking to Stewart at lunch last Monday, I asked him if he understood how important it was to Union fans that the team qualify for the 2016 playoffs. Stewart responded by asking: Why talk about making the playoffs instead of asking about winning the 2016 MLS Cup? "That's sports," said Stewart, who played 18 professional seasons, most in the Eredivisie. "You have to strive to be the best. "In the United States, and I find this exciting, everybody wants to be the champion. That's what everyone says right from the start, 'We want to be Super Bowl champs or MLS champs.' I think that is healthy approach. "I think it is dangerous to say we want to make the playoffs - not because we won't. I think it is healthy to say we want to be MLS champs. If you make the playoffs, you've reached your goal and then a lot of times you see a dip. "People might say this guy is crazy for saying 'MLS champs.' I feel you have to reach for the highest and the see where you end up.
I'd just like to point out that we may be the only Club in MLS who use a "Fire (insert name here)" thread as their general discussion thread for that particular person.
My first post on BigSoccer: In the "Fire Jim Curtin" thread Nov 7, 2014 This. This is what I love about Philly. Not from here but the only place I have lived (and that is quite a few after spending a few in the military) where fans are calling to fire the coach 5 months BEFORE he is hired and are 100% dead on with predictions of how things will play out. Just F'in brilliant. And people thought I was complaining. Still think this town is F'in brilliant in regards to sports fandom.
