After a long, long World Cup Break, the Fire are back and have the biggest possible reinforcement possible in Robert Lewandowski. The greatest acquisition in Fire history and one of the two biggest signings in league history.
Tonight, the Fire take on a foe they have not played all that often in MLS play, Vancouver Whitecaps.
I was surprised to see that the teams have actually played 14 times in MLS Play since 2011 (when Vancouver joined the league).
Overall, the Fire are 4-3-7 (WDL) against the Canadians, with a record of 2-4-3 in Chicago (I think).
The Fire are 2-1 in the past three meetings, with a pair of 3-1 victories in Vancouver (in 2025 and 2022) and an 0-1 loss in Chicago in 2023.

Coincidentally, the Fire's last match was also against Canadian opposition, the 2-1 victory at home against Toronto on May 23, 2026.

Vancouver have been busy as of late, with the Canadian Championship. They have played a home and home against Calvary FC, taking the first match 4-1 at home on July 8th and drawing 1-1 away on July 13th, before flying to Chicago.

All of that aside, this match is about one thing and one thing only, After months of rumour and speculation, the day has arrived and -the unveiling of our new star striker, Robert Lewandowski. I full expect that he will put in an appearance in the match tonight, likely as a late game substitute (I doubt he starts, but, as you all well know, I have frequently wrong!).

I am not going to rehash the Lewandowski Thread, since there is a whole thread there for everybody to read and post and enjoy. However, as someone who has followed his career for 15 years or so, I will say that he should make the Fire better in almost every aspect. In addition to being an amazing goal scorer, in the top five ALL TIME goal scoring in football history, he is also a very hard worker on the field. Now, he may not track back as much as our own Hugo Cuypers does or as Harry Kane did last night (he was England's best "defender" in the debacle last half hour of the Argentina match), but he is a commanding presence and will work to make every single player better.

With Borussia Dortmund, Bayern and Barcelona, he was given the freedom to be an out and out goal scorer, with out having extensive defensive duties, but it is his play with the Polish National Team where his overall game really shined. He was frequently the entire focus of the attack, but he was always a "team" player, doing what was necessary to help the team succeed. Sadly, all too often, they did not succeed, but it was not due to lack of effort by the Number 9. Unlike Messi, who famously has changed his game to a walk, walk, walk, into he is into the perfect position to destroy the other team, Lewandowski plays the match for 90 minutes at a high pace.

Personally, I think he and Cuypers are going to make a two striker combination that this league has never seen previously. If they receive the service they need, they should shred MLS defenses. If one is double teamed, the other should be single marked or unmarked. With teams concentrating on the "new guy," I expect Cuypers will find the freedom to score that he not had since joining the Fire. This could and should be a deadly combo.

As for the match, this is two aging, but still great Bayern Munich legends in Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski going head to head. While they may not see the pitch at the same time, since Müller played in the Canadian Cup matches, but only for about 90 minutes (30 in the first and 60 in the second) between the two matches, scoring a goal, I do think it will be great to see them both.

Since it has been so long, let's look at the standings:

The Fire are third in the East, on 26 points, with a record of 8 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses. 27 goals scored and only 16 conceded, for a GD of +11.

Vancouver are tops in the West and tops in MLS, on 32 points from only 14 matches, with a record of 10-2-2, 34 goals scored, 12 conceded. Yes, they have a goal differential of +22 in 14 matches.

Also, they have played two matches in the past week, so they should be "game shape." Not sure we can say the same thing for our Fire.

For those of you who only look to the Fire and not MLS at large, one of the biggest stories in MLS this year is whether or not Vancouver will relocate/be sold/etc. There has been a long running spat with BC Place and the Whitecaps want a new stadium. They have been "for sale" for a couple of years and they have had no Canadian suitors. There are rumours of moving to Law Vegas or Phoenix or some other American hellhole. I hope they can stay in BC.

We should have our trio of World Cup players back, since South Africa went out early and Canada and the US crapped out in the Round of 16 (seems like so long ago!), plus, since Chris Brady was foolishly left on the bench by the USMNT, he should be in good shape.

    Injury (and non-injury) report
    Chicago Fire FC
    • OUT: André Franco (lower body)

    Vancouver Whitecaps FC
    • OUT: Sebastian Berhalter (not due to injury)
    • OUT: Kenji Cabrera (foot)
    • OUT: Belal Halbouni (knee)
    • OUT: Ralph Priso (hamstring)
    • OUT: Cheikh Sabaly (hamstring)
    • OUT: Emmanuel Sabbi (groin)
We hoped Andre Franco would be close to ready to go, but those long term "lower body" injuries are tough!

As for the match, this will be a tough one.
I do expect the Fire to have the wave of Lewandowski adrenaline to sustain them.

Fire win 2-1, but I have no clue who scores.

As for me, we are halfway through our month long trip to Europe (it was way too long).

I was worrying about making sure my Apple TV account worked on my laptop (a problem I've been having for over a year now since I got to Korea), but it turns out that Friday is a holiday. So I get to watch the game from home! Bad news is that I'm sorta coming down with something, likely a sinus infection, so idk if I'll really wanna be awake for my day off. Even broke my diet and got some chicken noodle soup today instead of my usual daily rations.

As for the game, I think we get a similar performance for Bob's first game that we had for Basti's. Except in this case, we'd already have someone in there for the first half that was handling business so his second half appearance is gonna have less pressure on it. I'm also just excited to see this team after what's been a solid season prior to this, and to listen to my good friend Joe Chatz on the call (if I had to go through other methods to watch this game, I would not have been able to listen to the JoeCast).

I'm looking forward to this match. I think the Fire can win a close one and hoping Sebastian Berhalter sits it out but something tells me he might not. This week has been a bust for me as a door I was supposed to install came in the wrong size so was reordered and inexplicably is taking forever. Another customer I'm supposed to do work for returns from vacation today so I couldn't get in there and begin that. Another under cabinet lighting install is also a matter of delivery of materials lost in the system. Another rental flip gig had devolved into a hoarder/crime scene level of insanity and the owner/landlord is trying to re-evaluate how to proceed while I cool my heels and just in general I am experiencing a mid summer lull. My wife tells me I should STFU and "enjoy" it but I've decided instead to suffer a combination of anxiety and depression so I got that going for me which is nice. Go FIRE!

I stepped outside and the world smells like a campfire.

Still...I'm not in any way at risk and I kinda like it...and I frequently enjoy sitting outside by a firepit getting a lot more smoke than that. So I should be OK for the game tonight.

I wouldn't want to be one of the athletes playing in the smoke though...and several of my family members can't go outside today. The air quality index is supposed to climb over 300 according to my brother. That's nuts!

Pete (wonders if the match might be postponed)

It is smoky outside today. Hope it clears up by this evening, personally canceling my 2 mile lunch run in favor of not being the ******** outside.

I’ve never been to Vancouver, therefore, by the transitive property, it sucks. I don’t want any city to lose their team, that also sucks, but I would really enjoy a scenario where the Canadian teams all join the CPL and open up three slots for the international powerhouse expansion cities of Milwaukee, Detroit, and Indianapolis to join MLS. So my prediction is we beat the ‘caps by so many goals tonight, they immediately self-relegate to the CPL. Let’s call it 11-0, with a triple hat trick by Lewy and a brace by Hugo.

Glad to have some important soccer games to watch again, this past month has been a bore!

I agree with all of this but only 8 goals for Lewandowski as Zinckernagel scores a bangin' golazo!

It has been incredibly bad for days up where I live. The college out out an alert that those who work summers (suckers!) were to work from home this week.

Pretty much everything has been canceled.

We were threatened with severe storms last night, but they passed us by. It is completely sunny and hot.

  20. iQAir is a nice site. Here's the noon forecast. It is touch and go right now, but probably go with an extra water break per half like at the NWSL game last night. I'm still wearing my mask between food/drink because having been around grinding grit for years I don't like my lungs feeling like they're lined with sandpaper.
