Pomykal's hair made a miraculous recovery, though!

Do we know what he's doing?

Yes, there is a blond quota of probably one but there is a push to label him like the next Brek Shea and I don't see it in looks or style of play.

Check his phone records for calls to Landon Donovan?

Has there been any Paxton Pomykal updates? Is he just retired now?

Massive addition to the 2011s. Maybe the best CM in the country in his birth year.

Have to admit I'm surprised (if true) that FCD pulled this off. maybe they are getting back to what they've done in the past. Players do notice which teams have pathways for their academy kids and Quill seems willing to play kids.

Agent has good connections with FC Dallas. He recently signed with an agent and things went quickly from there.

    Good get, but we'll see.

Nobody younger than 21 (Norris) is really getting into games for Dallas right now.

I thought some had a shot based on pre-season, but those opportunities have narrowed.

That's true but earlier in the year I was starting to get angry that Norris wasn't getting minutes and now he's a locked in starter. Collodi is even older but locked in starter and at keeper he's still quite young. A few others have received token minutes but what I've noticed over the years is some coaches just never play anyone but veterans and others will start trusting young players, academy players a bit at a time and if one player earns their trust that coach is more likely to trust the next guy. Quill hasn't played a lot of academy kids but he has played young draftees, Norris and Collodi so he is becoming more and more comfortable with very young players.

To be fair to him and I'm sure ussoccer97531 would agree the FCD academy hasn't been up to par with their high period so there aren't as many sure things lately. I see signs that could be changing but it never happens over night. That one signing may signal a return to being aggressive in pursuit of talent for the academy which leads into players ready to move into the full team and become starters.

    FCD U15s v TSF Academy U16s, MLS Next Flex, 4/23/26, L 3-1

    Lineup (L-R, where applicable):
Modersohn; Pea, Coriano, Lester ©, Villatoro (’12); Jiminez; Schmitz, Pastran (’12); Lamar, Luccin, Olowu

Subs: Pastran comes off 5min into the 2H for Vargas. There’s an injury stoppage a couple minutes after the red card and they take off Jiminez for ’12 Villalvazo (shifting Villatoro to LCB and Coriano into midfield). 20min left they take off Schmitz, Olowu, and Villatoro for Cagle, Luna, and Dagupta (Villalvazo goes to RCB)

    Goal(s):

    · 37:16 – TSF CK. A TSF FW jumps but misses the header so the ball flies through and ricochets down off of Pea. The ball’s now on the ground at the top of the six amid ~five players and a TSF player manages to get his foot to it first, poking it into goal.

    · 58:20 – Olowu harries some TSF players as they try to hold possession in their half. One tries to clear but Pastran heads it back forward. Olowu reacts and dolphin-headers the ball over the RCB for Lamar to run onto. He rides two challenges entering the box and then squares past the GK to Luccin wide open in front of net for the finish.

    · 1:26:20 – TSF CK. Inswinger down in front of goal that Modersohn doesn’t make good contact on his punch and it falls in front of goal, bounces, and a TSF player heads it into the now GK-less net. Lamar’s on the goal line and saves it with his hand. Red card. PK. Modersohn goes the wrong way.

    · 1:36:39 – Schmitz is just inside his own half and tries to send a ball out to Villalvazo open on the LW, but he misjudges it and the TSF LB cuts it off halfway and sends the ball up the line to a CM. Villalvazo, recovering from behind, calls off Coriano so Coriano doesn’t deny the line and the CM dribbles unimpeded up the wing with Villalvazo right behind him. He curls a ball in behind the defense where one FW is comfortably off but allows the ball to go past him to a second attacker that is onside and scores. Villatoro just let the ball go past him thinking the first attacker would be judged offside.

    Notes:

    · Again, worth noting this is the U15s playing up an age group against U16s. They finished second in their group behind this TSF squad. One can feel the difference in age and physicality more in this game than the QCM one. FCD players getting eaten up in duels.

    · The 1H is fairly balanced, but FCD struggles to get their usual game state where 80% of the game is played in TSF’s end. Partly that’s because TSF’s good and has the players to play their way through a press to flip the field. Partly it’s because they struggle to cut through TSF’s midfield and then maintain possession once they break into the middle or final third. Hats off to Pastran (eg: 31:00 and 28:05 and 50:00) for floating to the edges of TSF’s midfield block to find space and pull their defenders out of position.

    · Pastran, Villatoro, Villalvazo are all playing up two years. This might be the first performance of Pastran’s that I’ve seen that justifies the hype – many of FCD’s best moments in the 1H come from him (winning balls, finding creative passes (eg: 49:00), driving through the first line, etc). Villatoro makes the one huge mistake on TSF’s third, and he wasn’t perfect otherwise, but I’ve been very happy with what I see from him defending and marking the last few games. He tends to do more with the ball when he’s at CB than at RB. Villalvazo tends to flash more with the ball than Villatoro, though. Happy with both.

    · Olowu can hit a very beautifully shaped cross, good pace, but he doesn’t place his crosses very accurately. Kind of spray and pray.

    · Few moments of Luccin early on (eg: 30:44) where his quick feet get him out of tight spots but then he rushes the next action and unnecessarily loses the ball. 42:16 is a related play – great progression on the dribble, bad choice to shoot. Another good dribbling play at 46:35.

    · Lots of good punching on display from both GKers. Really nice save by Modersohn at 55:25 (after Lester gets lost stepping to the AM).

    · Like the applied geometry by Dasgupta at 1:47:44, taking his touch as close as possible to the pressing defender to make his turn that much more acute to slow him down – the obvious play is to go straight down the line but he maybe gets caught if he does that.

    · #23 on TSF probably stands out the most of the players on that side – maybe he’s just the biggest, tho. Their captain the RB #12, puts together a few good plays as well. #3 plays a few good, progressive passes quickly. For the most part, I read “solid” into this team.

    · The 2011s missed the playoffs (in part because they didn’t have the opportunity to try to quality via Flex against their age group peers) and their season is done. Much more positive on this group than I was this time last year. Flowers had an all-timer of a fall / spring to position himself as FCD’s next huge prospect. Jaimes continues to be the best GK prospect at his age that I’ve seen in my time covering the Academy (though you shouldn’t trust my GK opinions). Besides Flowers, the big story of this season is FCD’s work in the rest of the group: the emergences of Coriano and Modersohn and the additions of Olowu, Lamar, and Ros give a very different complexion to the vintage. Having Luccin, Pea, and Jiminez as your 8th through 11th best players is way more comfortable than having them in places 3-5. I still think it’s a relatively old, top-heavy group, but, while depth is great, eventually you judge the Academy on producing a couple of great players a year. There’s real star power in this age group now – Flowers plus at least two others seems likely and would be great for the club. Notably, FCD seems to be shelling out cash in the new HG protection system – if they sign Lamar and Ros, they’ll owe the clubs in those players’ home markets. Also, lest we forget, they brought in Coriano from Puerto Rico at 13.

    Tiering of 2011s worth watching:
FW Benji Flowers by himself, then

GK David Jaimes, CM Diego Ros [more on reputation than anything – excited to see him more myself], LCB Miguel Coriano, FW TJ Olowu (what a find: if he’s not an early developer physically and he can build the right mentality, he’s Anderson Julio at a minimum – as much upside as anyone in the club)

We’re leaving the zone where I’d say pro-level ability is more likely than not: FW Quincy Lamar (I think the club likes him a little more than I do; aggressive on the dribble and composed in the box), GK Jacob Modersohn (flourished in Jaimes’ absence)

FW/AM Lenon Luccin (I am warming to him being one tier higher), LB Jackson Pea, CM Jon Jiminez

Not sure what to do with him: CM Sam Onsarigo spent a lot of the year hurt. Would be useful to have another high-level CM in this group.

I really like this 2011 age group too.

If it’s not a fluke and they can start putting together years even close to 2011, FC Dallas academy may be back.

They HAVE TO start being a less less patient though. They slow cook development to ridiculous levels. I don’t think it’s helpful towards developing talent. You don’t want to rush players, but you also have to keep up with the modern game and I’m afraid they’re not doing so.

5-1 win this evening for NTX over SKC. A goal and three assists for Edu Nys and a hattrick from Natty James (who now has seven goals on the season - he's scored two, two, and three against SKC in three games played against them and none against anyone else). SKC arguably had the better of the game in the 1H as NTX adjusted to a new formation (kind of 442 against the ball and a 2431 with it) but NTX pulled away in the second half.

    Thread-Eligibles Involved:

-'05 Newman - played RB in this one. Very solid defensively. Nothing of note in possession.
-'09 Liam Vejrostek - Debut and first start. Will turn 17 in late December. Played LB of a back-four in defense and (mostly) a left-sided #6 in possession (remember they did something like a 2431). Got on the ball the least of the defenders - was fine with it (mostly played it safe). I always enjoy seeing him pass because the technique makes the recipient's job simple. Held up better defensively than I expected - drew Missael Rodriguez as an assignment (a very solid MLSNP player with lots of pro games under his built) and only got run by twice, in both cases recovering enough to prevent the dribbler from turning directly toward goal.
-'07 Charles - Continues to eat up minutes as a CM. Starting to get more adventurous with the ball (a hallmark of his Academy days) but mainly he's in there to clog up the middle. Reminder that he had knee surgery in September - everything from here to about July is ahead of schedule.
-'07 Luccin - Aroyameh is back from injury and came off the bench and made a case to start over Luccin.
-'06 Simmonds - Back with the second team for the first time in two months. The physicality is real and the speed/originality of thought is super encouraging, but BOY is the technique hit-and-miss. Reminds me of Dante Sealy c. 2020. Gets an assist in this one off a clean knockdown header to Natty James.
-'06 Diego Garcia, '06 Daniel Baran, and '09 Sam Sedeh came off the bench. Sedeh's mentality / energy couldn't have been more starkly different than the older kids who came in trying to do something (and Baran did, scoring a goal after teaching Antongirolami a lesson in transition). Sedeh (not for the first time) looked disinterested for the first ~10min after coming on - eventually he perked up and starting running but it wasn't pretty to start.

Sam Sarver, though. I know he's not forum eligible, but he's what gets the juices flowing. I have to be excited about something!!!!!!!!!!

Who needs an academy, when you can pluck Sam Sarver off the scrap heap in the draft?
That scuba celebration and then downing a beer in front of the opposing fans is legend...............what for it...........ary.

    USA U16s v Mexico U16s, Vertex Cup, 4/19/26

    · Watching here for 2010s Patrick Arne, Alex Soria, and Chris Guillen-Lopez. Arne and CGL start the game as the RCBs for both teams. Soria comes off the bench. Arne’s #16 for the US, CGL #19 for Mexico, Soria’s #14 for the US. Reminder that CGL is born very early in the year (so he’s one of the oldest kids on the team), Arne right in the middle (which, in USYNT land, means he’s younger than average), and Soria right at the end (so he’s maybe the youngest).

    Arne

    · Starts but subs off at halftime. C-grade performance. Some pretty bad moments on the ball (as well as two good long balls to his ST, to be fair). Scoring a goal on the CK chance would have covered many sins.

    · Patiently assesses options under some pressure and goes back at 2:00. Drops the ball onto his ST’s foot from distance at 9:06 – hits the same guy on a big inside-out run into Mexico’s third at 36:50. Can’t curl the ball through a gap between the lines at 11:18 and sees it intercepted. Calmly/quickly finds the CM at 15:30. Loves to drive with the ball. The low pass into midfield at 34:00 works but maybe not to the player he intended. Sees a lazy square ball to his CB partner deflected and intercepted at 43:07 (makes the space to hit it at 47:15 but still doesn’t get the pass technique quite right). Underweighted pass at 44:25 almost leaves his GK out to dry.

    · Whiffs on a defensive CK headed clearance at 4:54. Gets free on a FK (see CGL pointing at him at 20:31) but doesn’t win the back post header in a mismatch. Neuron-threatening headed clearance of a CK at 22:25. Hard work to win a yard on an attacking CK 40:05 and get a hard header on goal for six yards (right at the GK).

    · Can’t block a cross at 23:50, recovers to the goal line, makes the key clearance. 31:20 sure feels like he breaks the offside line to keep an attacker on and then lets the cross in (it’s harmless). Misjudges a long-ball at 40:48 which takes him off the ideal line so MEX’s #9 gets behind him and Arne doesn’t have the pace to get there first.

    CGL

    · CGL gets to play on his strong-footed side here. For club, he’s generally at LCB despite being a righty. More happy than not with him with the ball. Obviously MEX’s second looms large but by-in-large I thought he held is own aerially and defensively. Lucero seemed to give him more trouble than Danjaji and Kimbrough. B-minus.

    · Calm/quick finding the CM at 2:24, 4:16, 38:15. Just overweights the diagonals at 2:40 and 1:34:50. Weird goalkick routine for Mexico – see 9:35 or 16:15– CGL takes it and has the GK to his right, so it ends up like there’s a four-back with the two CBs as the LCB (CGL) and LB. Too much slice on a ball at a bad moment at 16:20 – too much curl at 1:12:53. Elegant pass into the strong side winger over distance at 21:49 to flip the field – less elegant but similarly effective under pressure at 1:41:10. I appreciate the attempt to find the angle through the lines at 1:36:16, but he can probably execute it with a little more recipient-friendly technique.

    · Challenges for but doesn’t win a header on an attacking CK at 4:54. Nice job playing the cushioned short header to hold possession after a long US clearance at 5:40. Loses a similar situation at 13:30 but rebalances and pokes the ball free to get possession. Wins a similar situation over Kimbrough at 1:54:25 and 1:55:45. 8:04 gets to an attacking CK hit to the back post, loops his header over the GK, but it’s saved off the line. They use him as their main zonal defender on CKs (see 17:45 or 18:58 with him at the top of the six and everyone else manned up) – in this situation, misjudges the flight of the ball on the second CK and lets it go over his head for the US’ second.

    · Gets pulled over to the left side in transition at 9:10 and can’t get a foot on the cross that rolls under him, resulting in a great chance for the US. Lets an attacker behind him at 30:05 but the pass over the top is short, CGL stands him up, makes the clearance. Steps up toward midfield and blows up an attack at 38:15. Gets cut around too easily at 39:20, giving up a left-footed shot. First to a US clearance at 43:25 to keep it in their half. Nice lateral agility at 43:33 to pressure the first pass recipient and then get in front of the guy he bumps it to – wins a foul. 1:07:00 recovers to block a cross but directs his clearance right at a US player. 1:07:49 can’t quite get a foot on a throughball just behind him but does well to run down the ST and get the ball off of his feet. Breaks the offside line at 1:17:35 to let the ST in behind – again recovers to get in front of him. 1:21:00 dealing with a fresh ST off the bench flips his hips at the wrong moment and get passed around and in behind. 1:40:45 does well to force the ST backward initially but then doesn’t follow up (legs starting to cramp?). Mentally active moment at 1:44:15 as his RB misjudges a pass and he has to find cover for Kimbrough in the middle before timing his close down of the LW for when he has a loose touch. Good reaction to get to the ball and clear at 1:45:00.

    Soria

    · Enters as a sub in the 69th playing as the left side of a double pivot. Two assists is a great headline but it was a very lukewarm performance. Gotta learn to get on the ball more in possession and do something with it.

    · Watch him start hunting at 1:32:38 and then close like lightning (and then pass straight to the other team and repress less urgently than he should). Closes again in the middle at 1:44:53 and this time creates a turnover high up the field.

    · Assists the US’ first at 1:35:20 from a CK. Assists the second at 1:46:22 also from a CK.

    · Wins a good foul to relieve pressure at 1:49:35.

    · Two moments to cross starting at 1:51:50. Neither is great. Second’s blocked.

    · Gets off-balance defending at the sideline at 1:37:08 and grabs jersey to prevent the W from going by – it’s a yellow but that’s a little harsh. Digs out a ball from the same player at 1:38:15 and finds a US jersey to get it to. Tracks back to cut out a cut back at 1:38:50. Floats over and then closes to support his LB at 1:43:30 and clear a ball out for a throw-in from a tough spot.

Due to injury and international absence, FCD had a bunch of thread-eligible players in the squad last night.

Torquato, Simmonds, Louis, Swann, and Norris all on the bench.

Simmonds, Swann, and Norris all got on the field.

A very former academy bench as Cappis and Collodi were also there.

Dallas beat Colorado 2-1 on the road to move up to 4th in the West. I'm still not totally convinced.......................but something is working.

2-2 home draw with SJE. SJE won the shootout for the extra point. 4-1-4-1 for NTX - another new formation. NTX got completely dominated for field position in the first 30min but only gave up two good opportunities, both shots from the top of the box for Spivey, one of which he scored. Came out of their shell from there and probably had marginally better of play through the end of the game. Two goals for NTX, both off of rebounds from scrambles in front of the net. James and Nys were again the scorers.

    Thread-eligibles

-'05 Enzo Newman played RB and then RCB late once NTX shifted to a 352. At fault for SJE's first and also for a late gold-edged chance that Dymora made a spectacular kick save on. Got up the right side to help create NTX's first.
-'09 Vejrostek started and played the full 90' again. LB to start and then LCB for the final 15min or so. Drew Zach Bohane as his opposite number (again, not an easy assignment - Bohane was highly decorate at Stanford for several years) - did really well defensively in the first half but had his weaker moments in the second. Less to do in possession this week.
-'07 Ian Charles played the single pivot and looked really good under pressure and against the ball but couldn't measure his longer passing in this one.
-'06 Diego Garcia started at LM. Very little to do in the first half before they moved him inside in the second where he was a little more active and popped up in important roles for both NTX goals - unlucky not to get a goal and an assist.
-'07 Marlon Luccin again got subbed at half.
-'09 Sam Sedeh started at RM. Like the rest of NTX (maybe apart from Nys), struggled to help get the ball out of their end early. Did end up getting two good shots away in an otherwise blagh half for the team. Seemed to have good ideas in combination but wasn't on the same wavelength as his partners in James and Nys. Subbed at half.
-'06 Daniel Baran came on at half at LM. High energy, low usage, unlucky not to be the one to score the equalizer late, but his shot from close was deflected up into the bar for Nys to score off the rebound.
-'07 Jaidyn Contreras came on at half at RM. Very active progressing the ball and creating danger throughout. Helped start the move for the second goal. Did some great dribbling work up the right wing. Felt like a performance to snap him out of this funk he's been in except he gave up a PK by sticking a foot out unnecessarily in the box while back-checking.
-'07 Chris Salazar came on late for an injured James. Non-zero participant in the equalizer, but wasn't bright otherwise.
-'08s Gibson, Molomo, and Jordan made the bench but didn't appear.
