"Meanwhile, a European official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the European Union's Middle East envoy, Miguel Moratinos, has told Arafat that European officials consider Abu Mazen the only acceptable choice for prime minister.

European and Arab leaders have spoken to Arafat by phone in recent days, pressing him to get the new cabinet approved quickly. Among those exerting pressure were German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Jordan's King Abdullah, and Moratinos. "

Wow, I'm amazed that the EU has taken a stand on anything.

Whoa nellie...admirable thought this is, the difference between George Bush and our friends in the EU is that Bush actually has gone public and outfront with his insistence that Arafat take a hike.

But, hey, we'll take the support anyway we can get it.

There will never be peace as long as Arafat heads the Palestinians.

Except that Israelis have a habit of changing their leaders. Arafat has been around forever, and possibly before that.

    Sharon is willing to deal.
