The Telegraph are saying the ECB genuinely thought Stokes was going to post on Instagram his retirement announcement but they now think he will probably stay on for the next year as a player and most likely as Captain.

Kane Williamson has retired from international cricket immediately. Doing so mid overseas test is unusual.
This is clearly what Simon Doull was hinting at with his "big announcement" claim after the first test.
Why would you come all the way to England for what is a three test series to play one and then announce your retirement with immediate effect? Has something happened behind the scenes as surely this wouldn’t be planned would it?
He just said he thinks it's the right time. Gives him a few more years to focus on white ball cricket and play the franchise circuit without any international commitments, which sets up a nice retirement fund.
What's interesting about Williamson is he has one of the biggest differences in batting averages between home and away tests. He averages almost 66 in New Zealand and 41 away, which includes 28 in England, 33 in India, 21 in South Africa and 30 in Sri Lanka.
Well maybe yeah but wouldn’t that be messing around with squad selections for New Zealand or maybe they already knew about it and already have a like for like replacement in England.
My guess is that he was planning it either after Lords or after the series and that the management knew about it, but his form in the Ireland and Lords tests made him think leaving after Lords was the best option. Likely Henry Nicholls comes in, although they could shift a few up the order and play Zak Foulkes. There's probably a few Kiwis playing as overseas pros for club teams in England who are on the fringes of the test squad who they'll use as cover.

Very good start in the cricket through I imagine they would have hoped to not have needed every single ball to get Sri Lanka out.

Crocombe is a left field pick. He's almost 25 and averages over 36, with 104 wickets in 47 matches and a single 5 wicket performance. Hardly the stats that have you banging on the door of test selection.
Jordan Cox has been withdrawn halfway through Essex’s game against Leics, having made 204, to join the Test squad in London. James Rew (currently batting), Rehan Ahmed (in next) and Shoaib Bashir still playing Champo. Henry Crocombe left Sussex’s game yesterday— Will Macpherson (@willis_macp) June 14, 2026
An all English podium at the F1 Grand Prix in Barcelona today. Not sure if that's ever happened before.
AI/Google says it happened in 1958 at the British Grand Prix. The top 4 were all English. There was also an all British one at the USA Grand Prix in 1968 but that was topped by Jackie Stewart who’s Scottish.
1968 - Stewart, Hill, Surtees. Tbf we've got 3 really good drivers so I'm surprised it hasn't happened before.
And as a George Russell fan, the race didn't pan out the way I wanted but I'll take 18pts to close the gap after the shit luck.
Yeah they mentioned it happened before. A pity for Kimi Antonelli's engine to blow soon after he overtook GR but it happened to GR in Canada 2 races ago so it evens out.
