Of course, moving to another country is a lot easier said than done. It's like when my daughter was 3 and she wondered why people who didn't have money didn't just go to the ATM and get some.

Quite a few years ago I tried to go that route, and was researching job opportunities. Not being a citizen and legally permitted to work in Canada was a deal-breaker. The rule of thumb is that you need to have skills that the company would not be able to find with someone local. They would have to sponsor me, which involves costs on their end. If they can hire a Canadian with the same skills, why would they hire an American?

So without the possibility of a job, unless you're seriously wealthy, changing countries is not an option, unless you hold citizenship in another country.

 

Some European countries can grant citizenship based on ancestral relationship.

But the only Croatian I know is "Fix your bed" and "Clean your room", so I don't think it would work out.

 

Yeah, I know some countries will let you in if it's 3 generations (I think Italy stopped that after they watched reruns of the Jersey Shore ), but unfortunately, my family has been here too long for that.

 

My brother and his kids are actually looking into Croatian citizenship. He's working on the language. Not hard to do in the Chicago area.
