    No hope.
    No happiness.
Only horror ... and gallows humor.

The election is 10 days away.

I need a thread that fits my mood.

Off the top of my head, here is a list of people I know who are actively preparing to flee the country:
    1. Lesbian neighbors - they just sold their home and are ready to move to France (one of them has a French father)
    2. Jewish colleague - he is in the process of getting his Polish citizenship (via grandparents) so that he can move his family to either France, Spain or Portugal
    3. Gay colleague - he and his Kiwi partner will be moving to New Zealand
    4. Friend at another university - she will be moving to Spain to join her daughter and son-in-law
    5. Family - Mom and sis are moving back to France in January regardless of who wins (another sis and brother moved away last year to France and Costa Rica, respectively)
    6. Me - I am in the process of selling my place (I accepted an offer a few days ago). If Kamala wins, then I will rent a place here for 2.5 years before getting the hell out.

Do you not have grandparents who lived in Europe? If you do, that can be your ticket to safety.

There are organizations that help Jews in that situation acquire the necessary documentation, given so many records were destroyed by the Nazis or for other reasons during the war. My Jewish colleague is using their resources (he had no idea until recently he could do this).

You definitely drew the short straw there, given current circumstances.

I know you didn't ask, but in case it is helpful to either you or someone else:

One option I promote to my colleagues is to go for (additional) education in New Zealand. If you have a Master's degree, tuition for a PhD at my old uni is extremely affordable (about US $4,000 a year, with the possibility of a full ride scholarship plus NZ $27,000 for living expenses). You are also allowed to work up to 20 hours a week; if you have a partner they could work full-time.

Otherwise, depending on what type of work you do, a good website for job searches in both NZ and Australia is Seek.

I think lobotomies can be done on an outpatient basis these days. Though knowing Trump, you’ll have to pay for them out of pocket

Not really. I just know my mood will get worse as the days pass. So I'm leaving room for growth.

I just ran into two colleagues at the store - one is a Hispanic lesbian Sociology professor and the other is her partner (who is white and teaches in the Humanities).

The Sociology professor said she can't leave because of her family commitments. I was thinking (but didn't verbalize it) that your family will have to deal without you one way or another, given your profile puts you at the front of the "deportation" line.

    And then the Commanders won.

If the Redskins win their last home game before the election, the party that won the previous election wins the next election and that if the Redskins lose, the challenging party's candidate wins.

Since 2004, the rule appears to have become inverted, with the performance of Washington now forecasting the fate of the challenging party rather than the incumbent. For example, the 2016 and 2020 victories heralded the respective elections of Donald Trump and Joe Biden, while the 2004 and 2012 losses were followed up by the incumbents, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. However, Obama's election in 2008 followed a Washington loss, in accordance with the original rule.

Well, that rule kind'a sounds like a bunch of bullshit. But if it adds to my feeling of doom, then OK!

I don't even live in the US and I'm feeling dark today.

My gut tells me Trump is going to sneak this.

As a non resident, my two biggest fears are the global impacts of a pending trade war.

And perhaps more importantly, I'm terrified for NATO. I think Trump is going to walk away from it this time, with disastrous consequences.

John McCain used to have an apocryphal quotation of Mao that's apropos: "It's always darkest before it goes totally black."

    Indeed!

Will Canada close the border if the orange Nazi wins? I'm guessing the immigration websites will get overwhelmed. (From memory, the last time he won New Zealand's immigration website crashed from all the hits).
