******** me they're already sold out.

I'm not averse to driving out of state for a show, though.

I'm sorry. I just can't wrap my head around paying money to watch someone sing a song.

They’re coming to SLC at an outdoor amphitheater in September. I might sign up for that one.

I'm kicking myself because I remember reading about the show and meaning to get around to buying tickets for my wife & I and then I...didn't.

People even pay money to watch a recording of actors reading from a script--crazy stuff.

It's the musicianship and the joy you get out of an artist that you particularly like. Plus, I was never one for going to bars but shows? Hell yes sign me up. Live shows allow musicians to show things they can't really do on albums. Case in point, I saw Queen with Paul Rodgers many years ago. One thing that stuck out? Brian May is an amazing guitarist. Dude was doing these crazy solos for fun and could really play. I've been to at least 20 live shows in my life (I estimate), been to a few that are solid, been to a few that are meh, been to a few that amazing. Doesn't get old honestly.

The one live show I missed out on? Prince. Prince was amazing on his albums, but what he does during his live shows is another level. There's a clip of performing It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night and he's doing the splits in goddamn high heels. Then he's playing drums while Shelia E is singing. Prince was that guy.

Best live shows I've seen? Paul McCartney and U2. Paul is more than a Beatle, he's a magician live. Leading the crowd in singing Hey Jude, playing with energy you don't hear on Live and Let Die, he knows how to set the mood. That's a talent very few have. As for U2, their live show is the closest thing I've had to a religious experience and this was in a college football stadium. I got goosebumps singing along to I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For or just feeling outright joy hearing Beautiful Day while the sun sets.

You wanna know who's also talented land fun live? Weird Al. Saw him at a small venue, his band was tight, versatile, and hilarious. Seeing Weird Al give a lady a lap dance while wearing an orange tiger stripe suit a row behind me or 15 stormtroppers dancing on stage is one of those things you don't forget.

Thing is a good to great live show will leave you feeling energized and amazed while having fun. A bad live show, well.... Having seen Oasis, it was very obvious they were ready to call it quits.

Then again, people do pay money to go watch others play with a ball.

I know, that is just nuts.
Or worse, people pay money to see people standing on a stage and reciting lines [not even things they wrote?!?] while wearing funny costumes.
Damn, some even sing while doing it.
Bigger damn, some only sing in loud "operatic" voices in languages we don't know. And those tickets can be expensive.

Listening to a song online or on radio for free - fun
Paying a bunch of money to hear that same song played not the same, and probably worse - not fun

...at least to me. Some people get enjoyment out of concerts. I'm not one of them. Can't see the point.

Not seriously. I just heard the line somewhere and I thought out of context it sounded cool and weird and that's what I like for my signatures. It was just coincidence that Rare Earth came out with a corn video. But I strongly recommend watching it.

I’m with you to a point, generally much prefer recorded music listened to on my own or with a small number of people, I used to go to a lot of concerts but don’t really miss it.

But with a concert at its best there’s a communal sense of enjoyment that can be magical. The flip side is if that’s not there all those other people can be annoying and detract from the experience.

And as far as the performances go, sure they’re sometimes inferior, but for a lot of artists they raise their game playing live, particularly when they can feed off the energy of the crowd.

Since this is now a music thread, which one describes you? I'm sort of a mashup of Pavement-REM-Wilco

None of the above, really. Mountain Goats and Bon Iver might come closest, but it’s a stretch and I don’t like either of them anyway so…nah.

I'm not sure what the qualifiers are here because I'm an over-40 dad, and I've only heard of 4 of those bands, and one of those is Pearl Jam, and I have two of their songs on my phone. The fun will be guessing which two!

Wasn't that a collaboration effort? I think it was Pearl Jam and someone else from the Seattle area.

Temple of the Dog, tribute album to the Pearl Jam guys’ former singer in Mother Love Bone. Which I agree was better than anything Pearl Jam did later. Though I haven’t heard it in probably 25 years at least.

I never understood the hype of My Morning Jacket. I saw them in 1999 or 2000 in Nashville. They were meh. The band before them was called Gran Torino. It's telling if you remember the opening band instead of the headliner.
