The Distract me from 2020s P&CE Thread Part Deux

For a long while Philip Morris was owner of Kraft Foods and other food manufacturers. They were as aggressive in formulating their food so you'd want more of it as they were with cigarettes. A new book documenting it is out though the name of the author or the title escapes me.

 

Insidious bastards. Needed something to make up for the tobacco revenue they lost.

 

When they got in they were still making tobacco money hand over fist. One of the reasons they got out of the food business is that they were fearful of the sort of suits they were defending in their tobacco business.

 

The good thing about this forum is that I knew I could be lazy and not google up the author and title of the book because someone would know who and what it was. Shit...One of you probably wrote it.

 

Just skimmed it myself. Didn't even take credit for reading it in the 2023 "What Are Your Reading" thread.

Oh, ok, now that you mentioned it (or at least hinted at it), you have to explain the origin of such a crazy idiom as "the bee's knees" to a non-English native speaker like me!

 

There are so many of these idioms in English that no one can keep up. I'm a native speaker approaching 60 and I've not gotten around to learning the orgin of this one.

 

I think it's just a rhyme. Biologically, bees don't even have knees.

 

No native speaker knows either, not without a google search.

I always thought it was a deliberate mispronunciation of "The business". As in, you might compliment a dude on his nice car by saying, "Yo' car da bidness!"

their legs are segmented IIRC, so that's pretty much like having knees.

 

My mother-in-law insisted on taking my daughter to the fair and got her two of those goldfish from the fair. So and the last 10 days I've had to bury two goldfish. My daughter wouldn't allow me to flush them so I had to bury them in the flower pot by the door.

I am 5'7 haven't seen 155 since freshman year of college. I am easily thanks to life. I don't really have any issues just a pretty poor back and do incredibly and flexible because I never really stretched after a game during my playing years of rugby.

 

This provided me with a lot of laughter the first time I saw it

 

I had actually had her calm down and everything was good. So the second one wasn't anywhere near dramatic as the first one and then my wife was like oh let's play a song so she's playing the song A thousand years from I don't even remember the musician and all of a sudden the crying starts and the tears and the snot.

I look at her like why would you do this we had it almost over with. So I left her to do the consoling.
