“Anecdotal stuff here: Every person I know who complains about knee issues weighs more than they should for the strength of the bones holding them up. “

Well I’m 185# now at 6-1” and I have one replacement knee and 2 arthroscopic surgeries on the other.
    Just Sayin’

joking! not a lot of people have had the years to ruin their knees like me. :)

You can’t fat shame people any more when fat is the new norm.

It's a tough problem, because not only are unhealthy eating choices much more abundant than healthier options, they are also cheaper and less complicated to make. So I can see why lower income people juggling multiple jobs with odd schedules plus children plus in some cases elderly relatives can't readily opt for better eating choices and a more active lifestyle.

If we're talking folks with plenty of time, money and education to choose better, then yeah, it's 100% on them if they do not.

That's not what I'm saying. Auria says kids these days are getting fatter, especially women. So somehow all these women are making a collective choice to be fat and lazy? I don't accept his account as truth. But it is true that we are getting fatter across the board, and it is true that women seem to have a harder time keeping their weight under control.

A huge campaign against smoking, huge tax increases, tight regulations, and court losses all in tandem got us to stop smoking. We're hooked, and it is going to take a similar or greater effort to fix.

Thing is... Some folks have very little choice - as 'Nutter alluded, depends where you at. If youlive in the 'hood in a "food dessert" there are not fresh food markets available and if there are, they are very expensive for working class folks to patronize. Add to that the lack of education on food and the misinformation and deceit in food labeling, then it's not so straightforward.

Incidentally this past weekend I had a chance to tour the Organic farm that supplies some of local small produce "tiendas" near me. Fantastic operation. A community of 15 people that grow food organically and holistically and supply local restaurants and produce markets. We can get organic food at cheap price here. Cheaper than the supermarket. Easy to make the choice. We brought home some delicious produce. Our dinner included some broccoli and the best sweet potatoes I ever had ($1 for 2 lbs.). Out of the ground < 24hrs.

I'm not discounting what's IN the food, but they have more choices available than they take. I'm from a culture (Southern; extended family) AND a race where food choices and weight gain are inseparable. I didn't frame it that way earlier, because I didn't expect it to be necessary. But I see it daily.

I posted a link about several members of two families drowning because nobody knew how to swim. Hair is a big thing in this region, and one of the reasons a lot of women don't know how to swim is racism- they don't want to get their processed hair wet. That also affects exercise. If I had a dollar, rslfanboy, I'd have hundreds of 'em...

There are four convenience store eateries and five more mom/pop BlAmericana places within a mile of my home where you can get stuff I won't even describe here. People stop by there on the way home from their Arsenal engineer and other tech jobs. They aren't pre-Movin' On Up Jeffersons or single moms with two babies.

The only thing changing in the 'burbs here is the authenticity of the cuisine drops a bit with some cultures (Latino and Black) and goes up a bit with others (Asian).

If I stare at that image long enough, I'm going to conclude that this woman has something in her family that isn't completely White. Of course, that never stopped Bikki Jinnaswaley

Use your fingers to block out her hair. Do you see Hitler's ideal? I don't. I'm not sure what I'm seeing.

You're supposed to have some new parts by now. My paternal grandfather got both knees replaced before he died. He had been a brickmason.

Yeah, of course weight is a factor but speaking in evolution terms I think humans are still adapting to standing upright. So, knees and lower back are the weak points which I think most people notice to some extent eventually, even if they are a normal weight for a non-American.

I think when I first noticed my knees was when I was cycling up a hill and I heard this crackling sound which I initially thought was a plastic bag caught in my rear wheel or something. Sadly, there was no plastic bag.

More of us are living longer than we used to. Before we weren't living long enough for things like knees to break down.

We had a local Italian guy (who was probably in his mid 70s at the time) do a small set of like 3 steps at my parents' house before they sold it. They led down to the street & they looked nice when done. But then my pops says to me "take a look. are they off center?" Sure as shit they were. Supposed to go parallel with the curb but you could see they didn't. Poor guy had to break them up & start from scratch.

Correct. Both of my dog's knees blew out when she was 12. (Dogs only have two knees, I learned.) The vet said that was standard for the breed.

A lot of knee issues are hereditary rather than injury or wear / tear

Of course it isn't helped by being overweight and out of shape - but the plus side is you can really help your knees by addressing it.
