Ironically, for the state sometimes referred to as America's... um, "dangly bits," the "shrinkage" will be caused by warmth, not cold.
Wonder why they didn’t burn them.. DEVELOPING: New College of Florida dumped hundreds of library books this afternoon. The school also emptied the college’s Gender and Diversity Center, tossing hundreds of their books.Working to file a story now. pic.twitter.com/073dU3A6mp— Steven Walker (@swalker_7) August 15, 2024
In the interest of fairness--is it confirmed WHY these books were removed from the library? Is it possible that was a routine weed that just happened the same time as the purging of the Gender and Diversity Center? I kinda doubt it--weeding isn't as big a part of academic librarianship as public librarianship I reckon, but it still has to happen from time to time. (I'm not defending DeSantis--I'm worried about librarians doing their job getting caught in the crossfire).
Indeed. Our* Friends of the Library group routinely throws out hundreds of unwanted donations at once, and they only partially fill a much smaller dumpster. *I work in Support services, but we're in the basement underneath one of the larger branches.
When we weed, our librarians attempt to sell the books first, not just throw them in the trash. I've bought books online that other institutions got rid of as well.
That’s generally what happens. But I just thought it was worth pointing out that libraries do throw out old books all the time. But this sure does look fishy.
Those books aren't coming back regardless of who wins this November. Another day to remember that we are not winning anything, but clawing back from behind.
Governor Goofy wants to get into Mickey’s business. Probably a scheme to privatize public lands if you ask me. https://floridaphoenix.com/2024/08/...f-courses-and-hotels-in-floridas-state-parks/ Florida’s state parks are one of the glories of this place we call home. Our 175 parks span nearly 800,000 acres where you can hike, fish, swim, bike, canoe, kayak, watch wildlife, or simply gaze in open-mouthed awe at your surroundings. The Florida park system has won national awards four times. That’s three more than any other state. There’s a procedure for making changes to the parks. The first step is to amend the park’s unit management plan. The internal DEP documents I’m looking at are labeled “Unit Management Plan Amendments” for each park. Here’s what it says for Jonathan Dickinson: “This concept proposes development of an 18-hole golf course and a separate 9-hole golf course between the Brightline intercity rail and U.S. Highway 1 transportation corridors and the development of a second 18-hole golf course in the northeastern portion of the park on the westside of the Brightline rail corridor. The concept includes a supporting clubhouse and ancillary facilities.” Building these unnatural additions to the park, it says, would require “the relocation and re-development of existing park support facilities including staff residences, a training center, and the DRP District 5 office complex.”

The lie of small government conservatives … So the government of Florida is paying Sasse $1 million/year to give an occasional lecture where Sasse will explain people should stop relying on the government and need to support themselves https://t.co/0J8X7KcXWN— @StevenStrauss (@Steven_Strauss) August 27, 2024
DeSantis pulls plug on controversial state parks plan after public, political backlash "While the governor’s office and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection have previously defended the plans, DeSantis suggested on Wednesday that the proposal was a “half-baked idea” that had never received his approval." LOL. Homina, homina, homina. Errr... It was the lefties, I never approved it, I don't like golf courses, we're going to investigate who backed this ( his own office)
Always remember that "small government" means "I don't want any executive or judicial events to cut into my White privilege. I'm counting on the voters to keep POCs below me"
Someone ought to pay for this!!! Whistleblower who warned about plan to put golf, hotels in Florida state parks is fired https://t.co/07ixykSap2— Miami Herald (@MiamiHerald) September 3, 2024 Yeah, not deathsantis…
As I said before, the GOP and the Conservative movement are nothing less than a collection of grifters. That Sasse dude was considered a “serious” person in the Senate back a couple of years ago.
The punditocracy will always fall in love with a white conservative who expresses Very Serious Concerns about the populist excesses of movement conservatism while objecting to precisely none of its policy goals. Because pundits love tone-policing and don't care at all about policy or legislation.
Yeah, I don’t know how many glowing write ups I read about Sasse, how he was a virtuous centrist, “struggling” with right wing policies but somehow always finding the courage to vote in favor of them, etc. I have to admit I half believed them at first.
What’s the expression? Cut off your nose to spite your face? As predicted, Florida’s anti-immigrant Senate Bill 1718 has been disastrous for the state. The Florida Policy Institute estimated this law could cost the state's economy $12.6 billion in its first year, without counting the loss of tax revenue.https://t.co/XO0RNLFZYa— Thomas Kennedy (@tomaskenn) September 8, 2024
Steve don't have the work speed and hustle of Estephen. Brilliant. I love when a their bigotry meets reality.
