Simple way of thinking about it: a pronoun is a placeholder for a noun. If you don't know the pronoun, use the noun.
I didn’t know quite where to put this so I decided to do it here. My reasoning is that the way I see things going…we are rapidly approaching the point where any political opposition or voter will be labeled as antifa. Exchange between Bennie Thompson and Michael Glasheen, Director of the Terrorist Screening Center (TSC) at the FBI. GLASHEEN: Antifa is our primary concern right now. That's the most immediate violent threat we're facing BENNIE THOMPSON: Where is antifa headquartered? GLASHEEN: ... ... ... we are building out the infrastructure right now THOMPSON: What does that mean? https://bsky.app/profile/atrupar.com/post/3m7pwizt4k62f important context: Glasheen isn’t a political appointee. He’s a 25 year career FBI person. Speaking like this.
Here's one reason I have trouble with these types of arguments: like you I can speak more than one language. French uses the 2nd person plural in place of the second person singular if speaking in more formal settings (tu/vous). Spanish uses the third person singular or plural in place of the second personal singular or plural when speaking in more formal settings (Usted/Ustedes). Italian uses the third person singular in place of the second person singular in more formal settings (Lei in place of tu). All of these languages "mix" pronoun use for some people or settings. People shift pronoun use in French, Spanish, Italian and other languages, but suddenly in English it is "too hard" or "too weird" to do, even though English has a long history of doing so. I'm sorry but I just don't buy it, especially for people who already speak multiple languages.
People don’t even refer to their pets as “it.” That is simply too impersonal in our current language. Could that change? I think not as quickly as just using they/them.
If "it" is not appropriate for babies, why do the say "it's a boy!" or "it's a girl!" when a child is born or at gender reveal parties?
Can't believe this has to be said but the literal translation is We don't know what gender they are hoorah now we do it (the unknown) is a boy/girl!
I'm guessing it's because it's a statement of discovery and transition - going from the unknown to the known while going from pre-natal to post-natal. "The unknown is a boy" or "The fetus is a girl". The question is whether or not "it" is used in selective situations, such as the example you gave, or more widespread. If the latter, then your point stands. If it is a rare use, then it probably cannot be used as a generalized statement.
Speaking of pets. My dog is 8 years old. My mother still misgenders her every single time. Drives me ********ing nuts. Now she is one bad ass pit mix mutt. She will absolutely make you think that but for the glass window separating the two of you she will eat your face….but she will also immediately roll over and ask an intruder for a belly rub once they’re on the house.
My dog was a Rottweiler/beagle mix. Stocky, powerful and ferocious bark. And if you came in the door, she'd charge. Right past you and out the door. She was a bolter... Sweet dog otherwise.
When we first got the sprollie about 11 years ago, he was a terror. He's kinda calmed down now in old age. When he really got her goat, the Mrs would hold the front door open and say "Just leave. Get out!" He never did. Just stared at her. Still not sure if she was serious or not.
You just made me envision a Rottweiler ********ing a beagle and frankly that’s some bizarre shit in either scenario
Extreme even by IC standards Listen all y'all - it's a sabotage! Fetterman, expressing surprise that TPM had a copy of the letter, stood by it in a brief Thursday interview. https://bsky.app/profile/joshtpm.bsky.social/post/3m7sinepvgs22
I am of the opinion that this has always been who he is and Dem primary voters are just overwhelmingly stupid and lazy. Fetterman had zero voting record when he ran. Kinda like that nazi tat dude up north with zero voting record who people only know because Bernie is as dumb as Dem primary voters.
Why would Fetterman even be getting involved in Israel's domestic politics? Or is that what US politicians do these days
If you assume he’s just a grifter it all makes sense. He went from a small town mayor to lieutenant governor to senator.
It isn’t unusual, especially senators, to be involved in international diplomacy. John Kerry is a glaring recent-ish example. However, they are usually tasked specifically with an important relevant function, which I don’t believe Fetterman is.
I’m have a hard time thinking of dogs as female or cats as male. More so with dogs. Anyone else have that problem? When I was about 7, there was a TV PSA encouraging dog ownership. I still remember the tag line, it was such brilliant marketing. The video was film of a boy and a dog running around outdoors. The audio (I’m not sure of the order) went “is a boy a dog with two legs? Or is a dog a boy with four legs?” Girls I guess were whatever
