Ohhhhhh. OK. Thanks for the correction. But again, we already know that the Trump administration ignores laws like they don't exist.
Maine has a lot of old people living there. Quick search shows that it's the oldest state population wise in the US. Makes sense.
If anyone is interested, Offline/PSA has a good interview with the guy who led the recent large data study "Deciding to Win" There is way too much to dig into, but the thing I found most interesting is that while voters appear to want their government to act and improve things, this doesn't actually equate to voters wanting socialism/fascism - so there is a contradiction where they 'want something to be done' but as we've now seen, they might not like or even know 'what gets done". I think we are definitely post liberalism, but that need not mean post democratic. Also this was a huge study taking in 500k voters, and disputes a lot of the CW over what is popular. Overall the study appears to confirm a lot of what went wrong for Dems in the last couple of years and the strength of the anti-incumbency mood. The reason this stuff is important is Dems need to win in a lot of places that Trump won handily. (ignore the clickbaity headline for youtube - the podcast was actually called "Have the Democrats decided to win?" https://crooked.com/podcast-series/offline/
Even more strongly stated: the Republicans are giddy to inflict suffering for the sake of a political fight.
Saw a poll a few days ago that said the best they are putting up is a guy who got a Nazi tattoo covered up. Unless you are talking about the establishment, in which case I agree.
agreed. in some ways this is now the best outcome as Dems never had enough leverage to win the fight. doesn’t excuse the bad messaging though
Was disappointed that last night Lawrence O'Donnell, who I think worked for Moynihan years ago, tried to Senate-splain to viewers how the turncoats got the better of Republicans and none of us understands how the senate sausage is made. Maybe that's a legit argument under a more normal bipartisan era. But has he been asleep the past 10 years?
Yeah. I think he's ahead in the polls because people aren't paying attention right now. Once the election starts to kick off, he'll likely drop in the polls as voters notice his issues.
You’ve lost me here…Hakeem Jeffries is not white. And then you say younger congressmen don’t have the stomach for this fight, but when I look at the Hateful Eight, I see a lot of old people. I’m very confused.
One of Mamdani’s protoges is talking about challenging Jeffries in the primary. Democrats having two New Yorkers leading them in Congress, under a president from New York, where the NYT is objectively pro fascist, is a problem. I noted it at the time when Jeffries replaced Pelosi (who herself is from San Francisco.). For all the talk about Republicans being monolithic, their recent leaders have been from all over. Democrats’ current and recent leaders are almost all from NYC, the Bay Area, or Chicago: Durbin, Obama, Harris, Hillary, Jeffries, Schumer, Pelosi.
While those people represent those locals, H Clinton was more or less a carpetbagger when she won the Senate seat in NY. Sure she was born in Chicago, but cut her political teeth in Arkansas. And Pelosi grew up in the Baltimore political word. Sure, she started her career in San Fran, but that is not where she learned her skills. That said, your more general point is important. It's good not only to have varying ages and races, but also geographical makeups.
I wouldn't make too many assumptions about that. The guy comes across well and has a good backstory. Even the 'nazi tattoo' stuff is mostly bullshit in the sense that it didn't seem to have been raised when he was cleared to work in various war zones. Much more importantly, he's giving the dem base a target in a way that most of the corporate democrats refuse. That might be more telling as we go along. I'd suggest waiting to see how things develop before making too many grand predictions.
Josh Marshall has a list of essential items that Democrats need to support in the future, or they should be primaries like a pro life Senator in the 1990s (I’m pegging that era as when the parties fully sorted in abortion.) I would add something about campaigns and campaigning. I’m talking about campaign finance, and foreign influence, and ease of voting, the whole package. I would also add one thing that’s important, but not legislative: attitudinally, I’m going to favor Democrats who are hostile to shitty reporting, which is most reporting. Work the goddamn refs for ********’s sake. https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/the-status-interview-or-how-to-write-up-a-senate-purge-list
If I had to put money on it, he will be the nominee with ease. This week's decision by Senate Democrats will have made it an easy bet. In my echo chamber? The opposition research about the tattoos and the reddit posts have been met with two responses. 1) I don't care. I'm voting for the guy. No more senior citizen senators 2) I have reservations, I am not ruling him out. Here are my reservations. I would like to be able to vote for him. I don't think Mills will be able to beat Susan Collins. While it definitely hurt his momentum, the prevailing wisdom is that Platner has a better chance of beating Collins than Mills. I think the story to watch out for and this is everywhere is the obvious divide on the Left between the under 45 crowd and the rest. It would be really nice if Baby Boomers would start to think about people other than themselves for the FIRST time in their voting history, especially considering they won't be here much longer.
Good work, Chuck WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans say they’re open to extending a pot of Affordable Care Act funds that will expire at the end of the year — but only if Democrats acquiesce to stricter abortion restrictions on insurance plans. The demand presents a significant hurdle to reaching a bipartisan deal to extend ACA funding designed to avoid major premium hikes next year for more than 20 million Americans, as Democrats are adamant that existing abortion guardrails under Obamacare are sufficient. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/co...restrictions-extend-obamacare-fund-rcna243206
Boomers SHOULD BE offering to paint the goddamned apartments of every young person in America because they sacrificed their precious youth during the pandemic to give old people a couple more years on this planet. Instead, the old folks vote to give tax cuts to whomever promises to pump more CO2 into the atmosphere. Die already.
