It's certainly part of a reasonable theory. But to make sense, the threat to nuke the filibuster needed to be real. Thing is, it might have been. Here's what I mean: The GOP gets trounced in the election. Trump comes out immediately and says it's because the shutdown is hurting the GOP and the GOP should nuke the filibuster to end the shutdown. Meanwhile, the pain caused by the shutdown is increasing. The GOP is getting the blame. Shutdown pain will increase even more as Thanksgiving travel approaches -- thanks to reduced airport operations. The GOP and Trump don't want The Shutdown Ruined Thanksgiving stories. To get things open before Thanksgiving travel would mean moving to end the shutdown this week -- one way or another. Trump really wants to nuke the filibuster to do this. The GOP will do what's necessary. So there's a reality that -- to one extent or another -- the filibuster is likely to get nuked -- and soon. The cavers know this. To save the filibuster, the cavers cave. And that's why we can't have nice things.
What the surrendering Democrats in the Senate don't get is that this doesn't end the threat to the filibuster, it just pushes the threat back to a later time.
And you dont need a filibuster if the executive acts unilaterally and surrounds the SC and Capitol with ICE Texas Natinal Guard and deputized insurrectionists.
Exactly. All this did is tell Republicans that they can do whatever they want by threatening the filibuster. Another guardrail dismantled.
Like the meme of Black women being indifferent as Donnie burns down the country "we tried to tell y'all for years. Sitting this one out", how dafuq do these turncoat Democrats expect No Kings protestors & other base people to get fired up when called upon again?
One question for you: MAGA is claiming BBC put two separate Trump speeches together. What is the truth of that?
Ezra Klein (who I usually loathe) is basically onboard with the "they caved to save the filibuster" theory: https://archive.is/zkWke
You know what, I'm onboard the Gavin Newsom for president train. He's the only one who fcuking gets it: https://archive.is/doeY0#selection-2135.0-2139.258 But his social media team said it better: Pathetic. This isn’t a deal. It’s a surrender. Don’t bend the knee! https://t.co/beCuLi23aF— Governor Newsom Press Office (@GovPressOffice) November 9, 2025
Nah, unlikely. It's just a very weak case for overturning Obergefell. https://www.stevevladeck.com/i/178430000/hot-topic-kim-davis-and-same-sex-marriage
While that is VA specific, the Dems won everything (as far as I am aware) up and down the ballot everywhere. And it seems it was a combo of the militarism of ICE and affordability. How they didn't understand the affordability part is inexcusable.
It around these parts. Usually we use it with somebody like Candice Owens, but it fits with this situation as well.
It's not common. But it's been more common since last night. I used it here: https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/t...-non-woketicism.2136231/page-43#post-43322723 Olbermann uses the term here: By the way, the righteous anger on display in the first few minutes of the above video is well worth hearing. (Olbermann remains a jackass about soccer.)
He doesn't have that subtly. While this is a good argument, I think the cavers caved more because of SNAP benefits and because Schumer is a weak leader. That said, I think the filibuster issue is a part, and might be for people like Durbin and King and Kaine.
This is part of it too: too many Dems are too weak politically to stomach causing short-term pain for long-term political gain. Sometimes suffering is the price you need to pay for political advantage and progress. Dems can't stomach that.
What makes them think they saved SNAP? The President could unilaterally defund it tomorrow and there isn't a goddamned thing they could do about it.
I’m struggling to understand the political calculus behind saving the filibuster. What good is the filibuster if you’re gonna cave while using it?
No. It was two parts of the same speech. It was clumsy editing to make a point but the thing is, the point it made was essentially correct. That Trump had created the situation to try and disrupt the peaceful transfer of power.
Guys... It's fine... The Centrist Democrats got an agreement from Republicans to have a vote on funding the ACA premium breaks. https://bsky.app/profile/burgessev.bsky.social/post/3m5c77ipgfk2o OMG. How often do Republicans have to pull the football out from in front of Democrats before they learn not to run up and take a full swing.
