I was kind of surprised to see his name on there. Did he not just witness the results of the Virginia governor election? Durbin is a dinosaur, like Dianne Feinstein was before she passed - the dinosaurs think the Senate still works on the old collegial ways it used to. They're wrong, and the sooner they can be replaced (or die), the better. Fetterman's got dain bramage and won't get re-elected when he's next up. Angus King has to cosplay at being "independent", I guess. The four senators from NH and NV are representing tiny purple states and think they need to shore up their "independent" cred. I don't think it will help them, but I can kind of understand why they might think that. But Kaine doesn't make sense in any of those categories. He got whupped in 2016 by Trumpism. He should know what's required to fight Trumpism.
Can’t recall which ones but he’s voted for quite a few Trump appointments and in general still seems to behave as if he believes that what Virginia voters want is milquetoast centrism. I am so mad right now.
The really frustrating thing is that there's been, like, a perfect model of how to be an opposition party in the US, and if the Democrats had been paying attention, they would know exactly what they needed to do in order to regain power. The Republicans under Obama gave nothing to the Democrats. From the moment Obama was elected, they fought everything, with every ounce of their being, and they were able to characterize the Democratic majorities as failures, and regain Congress in 2010. And then they fought everything and compromised nothing, and prevented a lot of Obama's policies from being implemented. Democrats trying to work with Republicans may have worked decades ago, but the solution now is to give them nothing, and tell everyone at every opportunity that the Republicans are huge failures and can't get anything done. And it was working! And they threw it away today. So frustrating.
"The Republican and Democratic parties, or, to be more exact, the Republican-Democratic party, represent the capitalist class in the class struggle. They are the political wings of the capitalist system and such differences as arise between them relate to spoils and not to principles.” Eugene V Debs
Knave is up the hill a ways in Truckee - in California, close to the Nevada border. We bought a place in Reno a couple of years ago - my wife was working here sometimes, and we like it up here, and Sam Jr is going to UNR (University of Nevada - Reno), so we spend some time up here, but we are mostly still in California. I registered to vote in Nevada for the 2024 election, but re-registered in California for Prop 50 - I have established residency in both states so I can register in either state as necessary, depending on what's on the ballot. Not in both states at the same time, that would be voter fraud, but lots of people who have homes in two states register in the state of their choice depending on what's on the ballot. Rich people problems.
I wanted to link one of Mao Zedong's works that discusses different types of Liberals that I think describes the Senators who chose to end the shutdown. I find his words to be on the money. Written in September of 1937, entitled "Combat Liberalism". I bolded the descriptions that I think really do embody those Senators who voted to end the shutdown. . Bear in mind with some of the language; it was written over 80 years ago and originally in Mandarin. Some of the terms can be a little clunky. "Liberalism manifests itself in various ways. To let things slide for the sake of peace and friendship when a person has clearly gone wrong, and refrain from principled argument because he is an old acquaintance, a fellow townsman, a schoolmate, a close friend, a loved one, an old colleague or old subordinate. Or to touch on the matter lightly instead of going into it thoroughly, so as to keep on good terms. The result is that both the organization and the individual are harmed. This is one type of liberalism. To indulge in irresponsible criticism in private instead of actively putting forward one's suggestions to the organization. To say nothing to people to their faces but to gossip behind their backs, or to say nothing at a meeting but to gossip afterwards. To show no regard at all for the principles of collective life but to follow one's own inclination. This is a second type. To let things drift if they do not affect one personally; to say as little as possible while knowing perfectly well what is wrong, to be worldly wise and play safe and seek only to avoid blame. This is a third type. Not to obey orders but to give pride of place to one's own opinions. To demand special consideration from the organization but to reject its discipline. This is a fourth type. To indulge in personal attacks, pick quarrels, vent personal spite or seek revenge instead of entering into an argument and struggling against incorrect views for the sake of unity or progress or getting the work done properly. This is a fifth type. To hear incorrect views without rebutting them and even to hear counter-revolutionary remarks without reporting them, but instead to take them calmly as if nothing had happened. This is a sixth type. To be among the masses and fail to conduct propaganda and agitation or speak at meetings or conduct investigations and inquiries among them, and instead to be indifferent to them and show no concern for their well-being, forgetting that one is a communist and behaving as if one were an ordinary non-Communist. This is a seventh type. To see someone harming the interests of the masses and yet not feel indignant, or dissuade or stop him or reason with him, but to allow him to continue. This is an eighth type. To work half-heartedly without a definite plan or direction; to work perfunctorily and muddle along - "So long as one remains a monk, one goes on tolling the bell." This is a ninth type. To regard oneself as having rendered great service to the revolution, to pride oneself on being a veteran, to disdain minor assignments while being quite unequal to major tasks, to be slipshod in work and slack in study. This is a tenth type. To be aware of one's own mistakes and yet make no attempt to correct them, taking a liberal attitude towards oneself. This is an eleventh type." Special mention to Chuck Schumer who embodies the hell out of the second type of Liberal that Mao describes.
Republicans wanted to strip tens of millions of people's healthcare. Democrats just said that was ok. That's the story of the shutdown.
There were no good options. Reasonable people can disagree. I don't hate people that voted either way.
If the Dems various press conferences from these wealthy octnagenarions doesn't make one want to commit sepuku I'm not sure what more it'd take v
Sharpen up! https://bsky.app/profile/atrupar.com/post/3m5am4gcex32u It's even worse when you consider the beating Republicans took on Tuesday. However, you know a Red Card on almostbigsoccer.com is overjoyed right now. Take that, socialism!
If it makes you guys feel any better, at least you can all laugh at the BBC which has replicated the dems action in a British media setting... The BBC is facing a coordinated, politically motivated attack. With these resignations, it has given in The corporation should have stood up to the Telegraph, Trump and the Tories. Now, its enemies know how little it takes for it to fold So, an organisation that caves when it comes under ANY pressure in the most damaging way possible. I wonder where they got THAT idea.
These worthless ********s couldn’t even give me a full week to enjoy something. Chuck - I realize you think you’re in the clear because you voted against. But what’s the political point of being in a leadership position if nobody follows your lead? You should resign
When you have your enemy on the run, stop and have a snack and some coffee What they're saying: "We will not support spending legislation advanced by Senate Republicans that fails to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits," Jeffries said in his statement. "It's complete BS. A concept of a possible vote," Rep. Becca Balint (D-Vt.) told Axios of the deal. "People need healthcare, damn it. Not some lame promise about a mythical future vote." "Sounds like a lousy deal to me," said Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) "I assume all of us that have been fighting to protect our constituents from soaring healthcare costs will vote against this," centrist Rep. Greg Landsman (D-Ohio) told Axios. https://www.axios.com/2025/11/10/democrats-reaction-senate-shutdown-deal-angry
It's the classic play from them because all they are is controlled opposition. It's really simple. The Republicans obstruct and prevent the Democrats from doing anything. And then they get to say see how useless they are!! See how wasteful their spending is!!!! It all reinforces the propaganda they spoonfeed their base. And then the Democrats let the Republicans run rampant and they do all of these terrible things. And they get to go to their base and say see how cruel and stupid they are!!! We aren't like them at all!!! Vote Blue no matter who! Leftists are sick of it. My personal plan in the Midterms? I'm going to support Amy Acton for Governor. I think she has a real shot of winning because of the narrative against Billionaires and the racism that has been celebrated in the Republican Party. I'm considering volunteering for her. As far as Senate goes? I like Sherrod Brown. He was a good public servant for the state for a long time. However, I'm not voting for someone who will be about to turn 80 at the end of his term. I don't think he stands a chance of beating Husted. There's a Socialist from Cleveland that announced his campaign and I'm going to volunteer for him. Ohio is gerrymandered to Hell, so there's basically no chance that a Democrat is going to win in the House in my district. With that being said, I leave that vote open to whichever candidate ends up running, based on their platform. Either way I'm going to send a message with my vote by refusing to vote Blue down the line and I will be encouraging others to do the same. I am sick of this narrative that we have to run Centrists in swing or red states. At the end of the day all that does is allow the people in those states to never be offered a competitive vision of politics. They just get offered a diet version of Republicanism which ends up losing elections and maintaining the status quo. In my opinion it's a counter-productive strategy and a better long term one is to offer people a different vision and see what sticks. It is a direct reason for why the Democratic Party deserves blame for this country's descent into Fascism. Just like Neville Chamberlain with Hitler you do not win by compromising with Fascists. There has been a LOT of criticism from some posters about Bernie Sanders's campaign here recently. To which I say go look at the polls. Young people in this country prefer Socialism to Capitalism. If you don't think that's because of Bernie Sanders? What's the reason? I'd love to hear it. People LOVE saying we need to appeal to Republican voters. The easiest voters from the MAGA coalition that we could attract would be the ones who voted for Bernie and have been voting for Trump ever since. It's a well documented faction of people.
And the Greens are directly competing with the Liberals. Similar vibes to the undercurrent of Socialism that is beginning to be the Narrative storyline for the American Left.
Yep. And the traitors just threw him under the bus KILMEADE: Schumer says he's voting no. Did you do this outside leadership? SHAHEEN: No. We kept leadership informed throughout. https://bsky.app/profile/atrupar.com/post/3m5bpyndmlp2u Schumer couldn’t lead a Cub Scout pack.
That's actually a legit question. The correct answer is "the Republicans refuse to govern because they want to break the government in order to give oligarchs even more leaway. That's why they want to end insurance subsidies, etc. If we don't stop them here, don't be surprised if Medicare and Social Security are next on their list. Until they want to govern, there's no one to work together with."
I'll take a number 4 but hold the meat, the cheese, and the veggies. And can I have extra, extra mayo with that?
