And I wrote a strongly-worded letter to the editor of the New York Times, so I did my part.

Also, this whole affair was revealed to the internet detective agency when he was singing, with his shirt off at his brother and jewish sister-in-law's wedding who apparently had never raised it to him which I'm gonna guess they might have if it had been, say, a swastika. I mean, we've rehashed this one since, well... forever and people are still apparently referring to it as a 'nazi tattoo'

If our lot lose anything because of this and it comes down to the fascists using our own purity tests against us, I can't help thinking we fecking deserve to lose.

Do yer think the fascists would be using bullshit like this to undermine one of their own potential candidates??? Would they, feck!!!

Will he be a terrible candidate or terrible senator if he wins? How TF would I know. Maybe he will. Maybe he'll be a terrific senator. Maybe he'll invent a time machine, go back to the grassy knoll in '63 and shoot Kennedy. Who the hell knows.

What I DO know is we need to stop being so ready to throw people under the bus who seem to be quite popular with the voters. If he wins the democratic candidate race, that's it... we have to support him and people having made a lot of idiotic comments about him being a secret nazi, isn't going to help with that.

I have and will in the future. You bailed & that's your prerogative. But continuing to be a douche from 3,000 miles away is not the flex you think it is.

I’ll put this here because I think most of my Platner comments have been in unrelated threads responding to off topic folks. Yall remember the CapitalHunters account in Twitter in the wake of Jan 6? He’s now on Bluesky. He has a long long thread about Platner. Guy is shady as ******** and WILL make Sinema look bluer than a Smurf.

Let’s talk about Graham Platner’s Big Lie, finally. In 2009, at the height of the Gulf War, the Marines barred him from active duty. Platner claims it was his forearm tattoos. But his one forbidden tattoo was the Nazi symbol on his chest. He knew - and he left the Marines rather than give it up. 1/
This thread is not about whether Platner is a Nazi. It’s about how he lies like a toddler when he’s cornered. And that’s enough. He’s not electable, and Susan Collins knows it. You can too, if you can read this thread, or this 18-page document. 2/

Back to 2009: Platner had finished 4 years active duty and enrolled in college, but quickly dropped out and wanted to go back to war. The Gulf War was raging; the Marines were so shorthanded they were recalling servicemen to duty. But they didn’t want Platner. 3/

Platner’s excuse is a new tattoo policy; he calls it “stupid”. But the Marines aren’t stupid and they needed men. They ‘grandfathered in’ all currently-serving Marines, exempting them from the rules, for all but one class of tattoos: those that were "racist ...or extremist group.. related". 4/

Of course Platner knew what his Nazi symbol was. It changed his life. His tattoos were reviewed when he asked to return active duty; a trained officer looked for violations. The sleeve tattoos were OK. The Totenkopf was not. Platner chose to keep it. Somewhere in DoD, it’s all written down. 5/

Why didn’t you know this? Platner lies in reporters’ faces but no one fact-checks him. When his Nazi tattoo was first reported, he ran to Tommy Vietor’s podcast for damage control. He told his false leaving-the-Marines story; Vietor laughed with him. No hard questions for your buddies. 6/

Platner’s former campaign team know something’s wrong - they all quit. They know he would lose in the general election. Janet Mills needs to make him lose in the primary instead. And she can, just by demanding his records. He won’t show them - he can’t. Confront him with that. 7/

No! You are no better than Trump supporters and are ruining the country. And even if I wasn't an American I would say the same thing because it's ruining other countries, too. Gas (heating) prices in the UK have doubled in the past week. My British neighbors and friends think you're all lazy cowards. Should they be forced to fly over here and protest on your behalf?

When in the future? In a month for the next No Kings rally? After we have boots on the ground in Tehran and Havana? When oil is $150/barrel and the jobs report is -250k?

The truth is you're happy enough with your life that this doesn't affect you. So you stay home.

Does my current residence really let you off the hook for supporting a fascist regime???

If I were you guys, I wouldn't advertise my support for the regime so obviously. When this comes crashing down, "I didn't do anything" isn't going to fly.

it’s remarkable how many people will support a fascist was by a megalomaniac if it meets their priors.

It is "interesting" that a suspected pedophile, convicted felon and sociopathic narcissist has launched a presumably illegitimate war after already having deposed one international leader, threatened the sovereignty of its most historically friendly neighbor, asserted plans to take over the territory of another ally, has now threatened to do "something" to another neighbor's international leader, effectively created a constitutional crisis, engaged in arresting and detaining US citizens and legal residents, and has essentially ripped up the US Constitution itself and we have not seen a massive uprising in the streets of America. From a European vantage point, it seems that Americans are largely taking this all in stride and are not really seeing the urgency in the situation.

I think brummie's being a tad 'unnecessary' but, I'm bound to say, it seems likely dth is pushing things ever further to see how far he can go and the amount of pushback seems confined to ordinary people protesting rather than opposition politicians taking extreme measures to force a confrontation.

As to what that might mean, I'm not sure but various strongly blue states could maybe form an alliance to attempt to withhold funding from the federal government?

I'm guessing that would be illegal under normal circumstances but that's kinda the point.

In a similar vein there was an attempt to force an issue in Catalonia...

Violent clashes erupt as Spanish court jails Catalonia leaders

But, obviously, that was because they wanted independence just 'coz'. The Spanish leadership hadn't done anything like Trump has.

So what strikes me as the problem is that the democratic leadership are a bunch of corporate shills and chancers with ZERO political fortitude who don't believe in anything.

So I understand brummie's sense of frustration but, to my mind, without some leadership from the top, (and, no... Chuck Schumer isn't gonna do the job), it's hard for people to organise.

But that's kind of the problem - there isn't enough ordinary people protesting or being outraged to encourage the "opposition top" to take action. Let's be honest, the "leaders" tend to follow what the base is doing. If the base isn't outraged, the "leaders" will just carry on with what little they are doing.

And let's be honest with why ordinary people aren't protesting. They don't mind what is happening enough to protest every day. It's not what they'd prefer, but they're okay with it.

Why is it weird for me to think that Democrats should be leading protests against a Republican administration?

Did you forget which party was in charge?

I assume that sounders -- who also has the exact same argument and is beating the same drum -- is just an asshole in your book, too.

    Or Jitty.

Or the half-dozen other posters who have voiced the same argument.

    We're all assholes?

Your ability to construct a logical argument is very mid for a normie. For a Ph.D., it’s pathetic. Because of course he admitted no such thing.

I went outside to protest today but nobody else was there so I left.
