It is also misleading for housing as the national population density is often times useless, because that is at first a local problem especially in a big country with big differences in the population level. What is important is the density where people live (+-100-200km), and, I think, here the majority of the US population lives in comparable densities to Europeans. Won't help you in Silicon Valley that houses are cheap in W Virginia.

It helps once you hit retirement age and it's time to leave Silicon Valley for a suitable, less expensive retirement destination, believe me.

It also helps that despite Republicans best efforts to repeal it; we still have Obamacare. Our monthly premium dropped from $1800/mo to $400/mo. Thank you President Obama.

Well, if you own a house in silicon valley, which you can sell on retirement, you're probably on of the winners of the property market anyway.

We were lucky. We had no idea of course what the market would do when we bought our first little condo there in the late 80's. Silicon Valley in particular seems like a hyper inflated bubble which could easily fall hard, but no signs of that yet.

And good for you. I'm a bit envious. :D

Silicon valley seems like a good example for my point. There doesn't seem to be too much free land in a commutable range to easily expand the housing supply.

That’s right. Various vertical proposals that are met with lots of community resistance aka nimbyism. Interestingly they’ve been building like crazy…not far from where we lived at the southern end of the valley. Lots of architecturally boring housing structures have blanketed that area in recent years but they can’t keep up with the demand, apparently. People flocking to the area seeking their AI fortune I guess.

Is it very different from the EU? There are also several levels of funding for European infrastructure: cities, regions (with different names depending on the country), states, and the European Union at the top which funds large-scale European projects.

Yeah, I do know that (mostly though reporting/commentary on LeTour). And while I do think things are somewhat comparable, the manner in which they get done, and the purpose behind them (and philosophy for them) I think are often different. Kind of an example of this is back in the early to mid 2000s housing boom. In Florida, it was so big that new development were being placed in locations that couldn't handle the traffic, and there was no plan in place to accommodate that. Additionally, some of these developments were so big that they were overwhelming and over populating schools, so much that the state had to pass a law mandating a development build a public school if the size of the development exceeded some threshold. And that has nothing to say about water and power and other parts of infrastructure. Now, I'm sure there were places in Europe that had similar issues, but I would also guess that it was not as bad as in the US, or at least in my Florida example. And keep in mind that Florida is a state that has no state income tax.

I couldn't say if things are as bad here as in Florida (it does sound pretty bad from what you're saying). However, we certainly have our share of poor land-use planning, linked in particular to overtourism in coastal areas and certain major cities, which literally prevents locals from finding housing due to exorbitant real estate prices. Water management is also very problematic in the over-frequented Mediterranean regions. Too often, we have short-term projects, carried out solely for profit. I can't go any further in comparing it to the United States, as I don't know enough about your system.
Funny that you got this information while watching the Tour de France. The only thing I enjoy about it is that I take a nap in front of it.

  10. I posted this in the AI thread:

And just today in the news the big banks of the Netherlands, but be sure the rest of Europe will follow or already are busy too, announced they are working on abandoning American software in order to prevent hostage taking by American governments in the future. To fully implement the strategy will take about 5 years they say, but they want it to become an EU wide act, so the costs can be spread over all European banks.
Big Tech endorsed the mad tanman, but in the long run they're gonna pay the price for it.
Your fokking economy is for the most part a service economy with the EU and you're fokking shooting it's kneecaps out.

The English speaking commentary team would occasionally talk about road paving and since they were long time involved in cycling, they would occasionally know about national, regional, and local politics. They do that on Paris-Roubaix as well. And I'm talking about the extended highlights, not the full 3 to 6 hours of coverage.

  12. Man, if you compare it with state level infrastructure...do you really think we havenot got a division between nation wide and local infrastructure projects and maintenance? Do you really believe we do it over here from a central government agency for everything?
Come on, man. Don't be silly.
It's what one of the posters mentioned, selfishness to the degree not willing to pay for things not for your benefit only.
Has nothing to do with how big the country is or in what way tasks are divided between federal/state/local authorities.
It has everything to do with the population's mentality...ME, ME, ME , ONLY ME...FOCK YOU.

Saying it like that is kind of misleading. They endorsed Trump because he was favorable to their interests. Just like they endorsed Obama for the same reason. Several months ago, me and @The Jitty Slitter had a discussion on how the tech industry is libertarian and will back which ever candidate is more favorable to their position. No way would they support Harris, VP of Biden, who had Lina Khan as chair of the FTC and was going after big tech for being monopolies.

  14. In what way is it misleading?
They endorsed him and his mad hats. Why? Because his anti EU stance lined up with their efforts to undo the digital acts from te EU.
The mad tanner managed to make using American products a future national safety risk.
They can endorse a democrat who might try to fix relations with the EU next time, but their products are now being considered contaminated and on the way out.

I did like your post but the last paragraph hit home.
I’m a biker from way back. Road and time trial.
Now tho I’m the guy you mentioned there. July I look forward to afternoons with the TdF. Settled in sipping my G&T and napping between the sprints and climb topping. Retirement is a good thing. :)

Yeah, his platform was MAGA but most of his tenure so far is to stick his pudgy little fat fingers in every one else’s business and bombing countries while cringing, whining about a Noble Peace Price.
Funny how he seemed as happy as a kid in a sand box when he was gifted someone else’s.

I once read that the Tour was the 3rd or 4th most followed sporting event in the world. I never really understood why, until the day I realized that at least half of the people couldn't care less about cycling, and just turn on the TV and fall asleep in the summer heat, lulled by the monotonous sound of the commentary and the beauty of the landscapes.

I'm just saying--I recognize that we're going to need to give younger voters in particular something to vote FOR; we can't keep hoping the GOP ********s up badly that they'll vote AGAINST them consistently. 2024 should've been a wake up call for those of us who've been (correctly) reminding voters that "the lesser of two evils" is still better than "the greater of two evils". I was willing to make that argument right up until Trump won re-election, along with the GOP taking both houses of Congress.

To beat MAGA for good, AND rebuild this country into something saner, kinder, and more stable, we'll need to do better than "Elect the out-of-touch centrist neoliberals or the fascists will win again!"

Yeah. With every passing year, the number of people without knowledge of a sane era pre-Trump grows, and as that number grows the appeal to "just stop the madness" grows ever more faint.

If only there were a muscular Democratic opposition to kind of, you know, recruit the yoof.

Agree with all this, but I'd also add--there were some long-running structural failures which predated Trump and which very few in the political class seemed interested in addressing. If you're a young person looking at the cost of housing, student loans, the impact of AI on the job market, and so forth--kinda hard to ask them to fight tooth-and-nail to protect an old system which largely favored their elders at the expense of their future.

We can't keep hoping for this because they've already demonstrated that they would rather have Trump and the fascists than a Democratic woman of color. Seems like the kids either want the fascists or the socialists, but they've given up on the Democrats. Which leaves me scratching my head.

At this point it's the kids that need to do better IMO. They, unfortunately, have to work within this narrow, constricted, imperfect two-party system to rebuild the country into something that's going to work better for themselves. And while they're trying to figure that out, they can either work with the Democrats to elect candidates that at least represent their interests to some degree, or cave to the status quo red hats.

I don't buy this Democrats are the enemy of the far-left nonsense. I see it the other way around. And if they aren't interested in fighting for a united left, they will have no one but themselves to blame as we bid a sad farewell to democracy.
