    Luis Figo

Just one observation from a soccer fan:

Figo was scheduled to have surgery when he was first injured last year to replace ligaments that had separated from his ankle.

He declined, stating he want to Play and contribute to both Real Madrid and the Portuguese national team.

Why do we now criticize his actions, we should admire him for his courage.

While sometimes we shouldn't play if we are injured, he worked hard to recover and get match fit for the WC.

He played with pain EVERY day, and continued to play.

Anyone that thinks there was a better player on the bench, let me know.

    Enough said.

If Figo is now done, I don't want to read a single thread 3 months from now when Real is in First place and cruising through CL competition.

Who is criticizing him? Most people are of the view that Figo showed pure heart at the WC, playing when he probably should have been sitting. 99.9% of the criticism that I have seen has been placed at the feet of Oliveira, who probably should have substituted Capucho or another heatlhy player for Figo.

The fact that Figo came out this week threatening to quit the international game if the criticism persisted was a mystery to me. I just do not know who is pointing the finger at him.

Figo comes home Saturday to Lisbon, as Real Madrid are at the Estadio de Luz to face Benfica. Hopefully, Figo and Nuno Gomes will be top form for their respective teams.

I can't take the people that treat Figo like he always stunk and was never good.

I can accept the factthat he isn't playing that good in the last 6-8 months.

It's not being for or against Figo, it's just realizing that this guy just a year ago was one of the best if not the best player in the World.

But people in general especially here in the States, dog him big time.

That's OK. Anyone who knows anything about soccer know the kind of player he was before his ankle injury. Hopefully, he can regain that form. If Figo were American, the people on these boards would have sainted him. Some people are just out to get your goat.

Will Figo play in the England friendly?

I think he will............Hes regaining his original form and this game should only make him get it faster. But on the other hand will take the risk to damage his left ankle again..........I dont know.

One way or the other, we will find out in about 10 hours. I would like to see him not get called in, so that he may conserve his energy.

I personally think Figo was a great player, but his greatness is mostly in the past now. Yeah, every now and then he has an awesome game, but I believe there are better out there right now. I havent followed Deco as much since he left Porto but I have heard good things about him, and I have seen good things from him on the NT. Same goes for Ronaldo. I think my vote would go to one of those two before it went to Figo.

Figo still the best Portuguese player outside of Portugal. I agree with the coaches. If Deco can take over the NT and play as well as he does at club level, I think he will win this award next year.

Ronaldo is still a couple of years away in my opinion.

My suggestion is to watch a few games, I watched 2 games from each this past week CL, and league play. Figo was head, and shoulders above the rest.
On a team like RM he is still the main influence on the field, and in the clubhouse. These others players are achieving to be were Figo is.

I saw the CL game he was very good...We would be very lucky to have him on the wing on the NT.

Personally, I think it had a little to do with rest, but most of all he used the Euro to pass the torch over to Cristiano. Seeing that Portugal was well off with talent he choose to step down, and give the change to others. It takes class to know when to "PassItOn". :D
Now Cristiano has the weight of that torch, and needs to start making it his NT.
