Yes, i also don´t see lack of creativity in nicknames nowadays,
you just have to open your eyes a bit. ;)
When you compare it to the past, you have to remember
the fact, that most of the mentioned players, didn´t play at the same time.

Some other nicknames from current players:
Owomoyela: Owo and Shaggy (because of his hair)
    Klasnic: Killer
    Pierre Womé: Die Wumme
    Beinlich: Paule
    Fabian Ernst: Fabse
Felix Magath: Quälix (quälen = to torture, because of his training)

here some not so nice nicknames:
Ismael: Darth Vale (we gave him this name, because he betrayed us Werder fans  )
Kuranyi: Lisp Keffin (ok, this nickname isn´t nice)
    Ulli Honess: sausage Ulli

    Bouhlarouz - The Canibal

and to add some classical ones:
    Sammer - Motzki
Klinsmann - Flipper (diver was also one of his nn afairc)

I think it was Ansgar Brinkmann who was called that first, which was ironic since he spent much of his career in the second division with elevator teams. The same applies to "Pele" Wollitz (can't remember his real first name).

The first German player linked to Brazil was actually Franz Beckenbauer who was occasionally called "The Bavarian Brazilian". I don't think that nick was a good one as I've yet to see a Brazilian player that played like Beckenbauer. ;)

You couldn't resist? An easy exercise, all correct, of course.

    The other ones are:

Maurice Norman - Swede (also Monty)
    Graeme Rutjes - Professor Eigenwijs
    Alan Ball - Firehead
Boeve (forgot his first name) - Kleine Co
    Stephen Bloomer - Paleface
    Gordon Cowans - Sid
    Edward Drake - Ted
    Cornelis Kist - Kees

One of the few cool nicknames I liked was "Little Mozart" for Rosicky while he was still playing in the Bundesliga.

wasn't Sammer also called "Firehead" back in 1996, when they played the Euro in England? I remember him doing some commercial where he was called like that, cause of his red hair.

Jiri Stajner is called "Jürgen" by a lot of 96 fans, I like it.

My friends and me were so annoyed by the stupid nicknames that always ended with an "i" when we watched the WC that we called everyone that way like Odonki, Lehmi, Michi, Merti, Kahni, Metzi, Lahmi. *giggle*

I seem to remember Rosicky being nicknamed "Schnitzel" - the rationale being that his teammates figured he could use a few Schnitzels to bulk up.

But that was just part of a commercial. He wasn't ever called Firehead in Germany. It was totally artificial. Motzki was his well-deserved nick.

Willi "Ente" Lippens was a Dutchman playing for Essen. Got the name 'cause of his dribbling and footwork.

  18. What??!?
Oh, you mean foreign language skills.
I'll grant you that more Germans have a cursory knowledge of English today than let's say 40 years ago. But I also find that many Germans tend to grossly overrate the average standard of English in Germany.
On the other hand you have a steep decline when it comes to people's German language skills: http://www.dieneueepoche.com/articles/2006/07/12/37807.html

I agree. But it makes me feel better!

Sorry for the hijack attempt. Back to topic:

This has to be the dumbest nickname ever. If Schneider is "the white Brazilian", then what is Kaka? Or Zico?

You're right of course. I didn't really mean what I posted, I just felt like using the word 'maudlin' and that seemed like a good chance.

  20. I agree. 'Maudlin' is a great word. Actually, I've been waiting for an opportunity to use it for some years now, myself. Hasn't come up yet. *sulks*

Bergkamp was also known as the "Iceman" because of his composure and intelligent gameplay. Hashemian has also been referred to as the "Helicopter" because of his high leaps and heading ability.
