If Lewandowski cannot raise the output we got from Hugo, I will not let any of you forget this. Hugo is still leading the league's golden boot race. We chased the name and unsettled a guy who already worked. The thing about "the devil you know" and that. So we'll see what happens with the guy who, while he was still playing at a high level, is significantly older and maybe not as hungry.

 

So...this probably won't pan out.

The timetable of this sale makes me think it may have been discussed and basically agreed to six months ago. Fire talked to Cuypers, Cuypers says he would prefer to leave if Lewy is acquired, Fire agrees and lines up a conditional transfer agreement, etc. ( Surprised at price)
Kinda wild theory but I cannot help but wonder.

Zink and Bamba can provide A LOT of quality balls in the box for Lewy. I see the Fire's new number 9 killing it in the MLS. Love Cuypers but a huge upgrade.

 

Huge upgrade? If Lewandowski was younger I might agree, but he’s old. Cuypers is in the golden boot race and really presses well. MLS is not an easy league to play in, especially with the crazy travel they have to go through. People underestimate that factor. Hope he thrives, but plenty of old Europeans have been humbled by MLS.

And/or he knew GGG is fundamentally not a 2 striker thinker and preferred moving now to moving in December.

 

That was the giving up part. It’s a bummer but he earned the pay day and sometimes the club has to reward the player and set them free.

 

Still kind of shocked. Golden boot leader, all-star, locker room presence, and all around good guy. Hopefully Lewandowski is as good here as he apparently has been previously but this is a bit rough to process.

I feel like there's a reasonable conversation about the role of teammates here. I feel like I brought it up a while ago.

Yeah, apparently has been previously. I don’t follow any league he’s played in - I know as much about him as I did about Shaqiri when he signed. Apparently- based on people’s reactions online, he’s a world class player. I hope that, like some world class players, unlike some world class players (some of whom have worn our badge), he plays as well in MLS as he has before coming here. If he’s a Maloney or Castillo it will be a much harder pill to swallow losing Hugo.

Dude, I’ve seen the comments and posts about him, and I've also -far as I can tell- never seen him play before. I don’t need to research him specifically to know that there have been late in their career players that have come from Europe/elsewhere to MLS and flopped - it’s practically a meme at this point. Yes, there has been a recent run with greater success, but theres still an Insigne or two and it’s always a risk.

And I’m not comparing him to Insegne, Castillo, or any other player mentioned - how could I? Ive never seen him play. I’m just pointing out theres no such thing as a sure thing and expressing a bit of shock and disappointment that we now have a know quantity, a proven MLS scorer, the literal best goal scorer in the league at this point and time based on goals scored, that is walking as what can only be interpreted as a result of this signing.

I’m sure his ego can survive the absolute insult of some handsome jackass on BigSoccer not feeling 100% sure that he will be everything he has been previously and more in an immediate enough fashion to replace the best goal scorer in the league while we are in the middle of our best season in years. I hope he does, obviously, but it’s not guaranteed and again, it sucks to see Hugo, someone who left it all on the field, seemed a good locker room guy, and a fan favorite, out of the door at this crucial point in the season.

 

I think we'd win more games if we switched to a 4-4-4-4. Am I outta line?
