Compare a highly-attended Clippers game to an average MLB game. Now...how many people go to a Clippers game because of whatever the promo is? It's fair to expect a slight bump. If Columbus had a MLB team, average attendance would be well above 10k. They also had a soccer team. I believe they played at Capitol with a few games at Crew Stadium. I believe I saw them at Crew Stadium once or twice. But again, people had the choice between top-tier and whatever tier the hockey Stars were before they folded mid-season when the owner couldn't pay the bills. Why do you think the Chill left town? There was a noticeable bump in OSU hockey when the NHL canned their season back in 2003 or so. I've seen OSU hockey games get over 17k. Of course OSU women's soccer also has the student support and the OSU name attached. I believe admission is free which also helps. But how many more people would support a Columbus women's soccer team if it was NWSL? The rain referred to the last Columbus home game. We got 20k. If we were USL-C, would we have had 20k? It's entirely possible, of course, but I'd bet against it. Throw in the weather we had and more people consider staying home than if it was 70 and sunny. With this, I do agree: "Or maybe USL isn't nearly as popular as pro/rel hipsters want us to believe." It's not just with soccer, but other sports across the board. With USL, being a lower league, it isn't surprising they got the numbers they did the last few games. Now might some of those numbers have been lower than usual/expected because of various reasons unique to each market? It's quite possible. I'm surprised the TB-Orlando game was so sparsely attended, considering the drive is under two hours. My overall point is that there's a huge dropoff in this country between any D1 and D2 sport, despite what the USL hipsters may think because, as you said, "USL isn't nearly as popular as pro/rel hipsters want us to believe."
Huzzah! THE CUP is back! The Round of 16 kicks off tonight. Full schedule here: https://www.ussoccer.com/us-open-cup/schedule The Riverhounds (cheaters!) are the last of the minnows (excluding DC and Austin), so I guess I want them to win it all. The Revs are playing in Providence (neat).
Wow. Porter rolling out a uh... interesting lineup. From the Love to See It Department: Crew Legend Keegan Hughes makes the starting XI! Gigi wants the W.
Hoping to watch some of Charlotte tonight but i doubt it , it’s my daughters birthday ! I will still hope for a cupset
The San Jose-Portland game was a fun watch. I was hoping it'd go to PKs for some additional drama, but Portland couldn't hold it together. Pulling for the Riverhounds (frauds!!) tonight and loads of extra time.
