Champions Cup Draw Nears Could happen in the Champions Cup. Club America and CID Necaxa both play there. It sure would be nice to see the Crew play in one of the best stadiums in the world. I bet those Mexican's feel the same way about coming back to sunny warm CCS. Bring it, just Bring it.
Azteca is one of the biggest stadiums but far from one of the best. I've been there. I wish we could see these games on TV.. boo hoo..
Maybe not facility wise, but the history of the place can't be beat in North America, at least in Soccer. IMO, that's what makes a stadium great, not all the new luxeries.
the only stadium in history to hold 2 world cup finals. (the final game) the mexico vs u.s game wcq game drew 100 thousand (they beat us 1-0)
yeah, even if the Crew does play, it's a CONCACAF game, which means it'll probably be on Telemundo or Galavision or some channel only 3 people within I-270 get.
According to the article on MLSnet.com, the Crew will face either a Carribean or a Central American team, not a Mexican team. We'd have to beat our first opponent to reach a Mexican team. Sounds like you can't face another MLS team until the semifinals. So there is a good chance of an MLS team making it all the way, since we consist of 1/4 of the teams.
i still laugh when i think of sam's army unfolding a GIANT american flag in the sea of green that day. those boys had some balls. i salute you.
It was a shame that because of injuries we had to put such a crap team out there. I'm looking forward to this time around sending a better team and hoping to get a win there to break our duck.
If it's on those stations, at least most in the LA area can see them, and anywhere with a large Hispanic population.. I don't know that they will show them, though.
I think that the only game transmited last year was the final Pachuca-Morelia at Cruz Azul's stadium. It was transited by Tv Azteca in México, and Azteca America in USA. Necaxa is moving to Aguascalientes this year, probably their CCC games are going to be played there, as they did with the Merconorte Cup.
I thought this tournament was set up w/ Mexican and MLS clubs on the opposite sides of the brackets...
There are two brackets. Each bracket will have 2 MLS teams, 2 Mexican teams, 3 CenAm teams and 1 Carribean.
How Will Mgmt Leverage CC? I'm stoked to see our Championship Crew again take the international stage. Last year for the best fan base was OK, earning a berth between the lines is so much sweeter. Competitions like Champions Cup, UCL, and Libertadores are what distinguishes MLS' scope from the other Big Five leagues in the States. The teams of the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB don't face meaningful competition outside of their leagues that they have to earn their way into. There's no higher stage to play on than the domestic. Shouldn't MLS, and her clubs, be doing more to educate and promote this aspect of The Beautiful Game? I mean besides a couple of pages attached to the team website.
If Columbus can advance beyond the first round of this competition, the first couple weeks of April could be busy: April 5 - home with Los Angeles April 9 - CONCACAF match April 12 - away to MetroStars April 16 - CONCACAF match April 19 - away to New England
The Crew versus Deportivo Árabe Unido SERIES 6: Deportivo Árabe Unido (PAN) v Columbus Crew (USA) http://concacaf.com/news/article.page/1196
I guess I can take solice in the fact that we aren't playing a Mexican team, and therefore will be able to get Wendy's before the match.
"Screw going to Panama!" In this morning's Dispatch - sorry, the exact quote isn't online yet - Bob Hunter mentioned in his "Rumblings" column that the Crew are trying to get Deportivo Árabe Unido to play their "home" match in Florida on March 12 with the return leg in Columbus on March 26.
