That corner kick goal scoring drought thread got me thinking ...

Way back in 2002, before Freddy Adu was born and well before rock and roll was invented, our favorite soccer team was suffering from a bit of a scoring drought. Games would come, and games would go, and not a goal was scored for some 531 long minutes. Then a prescient thing happened: I posted a goal pool. “At what minute will DC United’s goal drought end,” I asked. And what happened next was truly astounding.

Predictions ranged from 1284 minutes to 539. Whoever got closest to the actual number won! And then it happened: “Today, August 17th 2002, DC United broke its goal-scoring drought courtesy of Q2 after 536 long minutes. It was a really nice touch by our new Salvadoran - a flick with the outside of his left boot that sent the ball curling around Joe Cannon at the same time as he was sliding to the right across the mouth of the goal. And it was in the south goal at Spartan Stadium - right in front of the small but vocal group of DC United supporters that had assembled for the match.” I was there. It was a fine goal.

Is it a coincidence that Q2 scored that goal right after we started up that pool? Eh, probably … But I choose to think otherwise. He scored that goal because of that pool, and because he wanted Jose Couso, the man with the most optimistic prediction of anyone, to win the pool and to gain praise and esteem from all quarters. That is what I choose to believe.

Two weeks after Q2 scored that fateful goal, Eddie Pope sent a Marco Etcheverry corner kick into the net. That was the last corner kick goal we got in a league match. Since then (https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2369331#post2369331 ]according to isaac101’s count[/url]) we’ve taken 219 corners. That’s a lot of corners. That’s a lot of goal scoring opportunities that have gone for naught. It’s time to do something about this situation. And so to bring our drought to a swift end I have elected to start up another goal pool. The question is …

How many corner kicks until we score off one?

If you need a hard and fast rule to know when we’ve scored on a corner then I’d suggest this: the guy taking the corner gets credited with the assist.

We’re at 219 corners now, so if you think we’ll score on our next corner you’d pick 220. Got it? Easy! So please post your prediction below.

    All entries must be unique.

The poster whose prediction is closest to the actual number of corners until the drought ends – without going over - wins. Deadline for entry is kickoff on Saturday against the MetroStars.

Yeah, yeah … what's the prize? Self satisfaction! There’s no better prize than that! ;)

We look more dangerous on corners this year, but I worry it won't happen until Thiago comes back. Still, I'm guessing sooner rather than later. 240.

Re: The Corner Kick Goal Pool :: How many corners until we score off one?

Since someone stole my earlier pick of #222 (but who did post a babe, so I guess I'll let it slide), I will have to take #234, though I hope it really doesn't take that long.

I still believe we lose if I don't have a beer on I66 on the way to the game, so this idea makes pefect sense to me.

This begs an interesting question. Do we get a lot of corners because of dangerous attacking play or are teams simply kicking the ball over the end line because they know we're impotent on corners?
