Did anyone else notice the beer gut that Mathis is still sporting around his mid-section? I thought he was going to get himself in shape again. I know. He scores goals. But I don't care. No professional soccer player should have a gut like that.

Ha, I just finished mentioning this in the Results thread. I thought he looked chubby during the match. Then he pulled off his shirt after scoring on his nice goal and I thought Man he has a gut like me....too funny.

This is more of a reason that Clint needs to go to Europe---competition will cause Clint to get in the best shape of his life.

Clint has tatoos all over his arms and upper back.

    who cares?

and who cares if he isn't ripped and his muscles are not bulging. the guy is not fat that is for sure, maybe a tad 'think' around the midsection but he does not have a beer gut. and even if he does...

if he scores once a game i dont give a crap is he weighs 200 pounds, he ran more tonight <covering back on defense, especially in the first half> than i have ever seen him run and he seemed just fine.

Is it me or is Clint levitating? He must have learned that from David Blane.

He should use that trick in a game.

Of course he could get even higher without the Belly.

Plus, in Europe, he can meet the magic elves and marry the princess.

Wanderer, your obsession is comical. Every problem looks like a nail to you, and going to Europe is the hammer.

    Lord, he's good people!

These days, our Clint looks like he has a rusted Ford Fairlane up on blocks in his front yard, knows how to put 100 percent of a possum to good use, and hoards corncobs.

Who is the Deliverance extra in clown make-up behind him?

You know, a few people got real bent out of shape when I compared Clint to our version of Gascoigne, and at the time I meant it in a lighthearted way, but its becoming increasingly a more accurate comparison with each appearance.

From now on, unti l the hair and beard combo cease to exist, i dub thee Butch Mathis.

Your denial that Europe is not the soccer Mecca is comical. But then again you think playing against hacks like Agoos, McCarty and Lapper will help someone develop their game too. Comical, but definitely understandable when one looks at your logic.

I can't stop laughing, then going back at looking at my other brother Darryl jumping up and down looking at Clint like he is Gazza or some other immortal.

I don't care either, just noticing something you don't see on the standard suburban soccer pu$$y type that we usually seem to have.

That is funny junk. What's not to like about a handlebar mustache?

sorry Puma, that's not a handlebar moustache, far from it - that's a sort of "wiped some grease from car repairs on my chin, shouda known better than to eat beer nuts at the same time" sort of hairy growth.

That is none other than Ned Beatty, Jr. Squeal!

Cletus is just looking the part. If he scores and creates goals, I don't care. However, he won't be able to keep up on the international level (3rd string Canada is not the Int'l level) unless he loses a few.

it's unfortunate that clint doesn't measure up to the standards you folks seem to have for a soccer player. however, I also doubt that any of you out there who are "ripped" could even carry his cup.
critique his play all day long. as far as the personal attacks on his body go, i believe that's just out of line.
I'm beginning to see why soccer folks (and you are not included) don't frequent these boards. it's like a gossip fest with old ladies.

here is the problem- Arena can't use him in a game where he wants to go high pressure. Clint didn't play against Portugal because he wanted to go pressure. The USA won that game because they got after Portugal HARD.
I love Mathis and his talent, but when Arena has to pick and choose when he can use him, there really IS a problem and it is not just us BS posters. For God sake, he has world-class talent, he should be in world class shape. We have never, ever had this discussion about another USA player because they are very fit.

i agree with you. and yes i think it's incumbent upon ALL players to go out on that field as fit as possible. and i know that bruce wants clint at his best. however, one can't change a leopards spots and i think we need to accept clint as he is. a very good soccer player who probably could be better.
personal attacks on him will not change this problem.
if it becomes important to him to get "ripped" i'm sure he will.
    til then, .........

Boys!Boys! It's not hair at all. In Georgia it's proof positive that Clint is level headed. You can always tell the level headed ones because the tobacco juice runs out of both sides of their mouth!

Coming from the land of tobacco, you would be pretty well-versed in these matters.
