I've always heard it pronounced like "Paco" or "Holly" than "alley", "Sally" or "gallery". Since I live in the South, it's probably me who's got it wrong.

I pronounced it like that the first time I mentioned the place, that's how I have heard it (on the east coast) and was quickly corrected.

As I understand it, that's how the middle syllable in Nevada is actually pronounced.

It's this part of the south, too. My last name is constantly butchered, even to those who I have explained how to say it. And it didn't happen when I lived in Orlando. Only here in Memphis.

I've always heard Nevada pronounced like "Impala", instead of like "cat" or "rat". Problem with text descriptions is, you run into someone who pronounces these "a"s the same way.

We share the same part of the South- you're only about 200 crowflight miles or so from me.

Nevada, Iowa, is pronounced to rhyme with "evade a" by the locals.

Edit: my bad: I thought this was the American People Failure Watch thread.

Weird pronunciations are an essential part of any Sarah Palin thread.

"Sarah Palin / American People Failure" - not much difference. (or should I say "same difference" and send out a call to AB?)

    Nuh-vah-dah.

Dad got into a fight in the Marines over the pronunciation of New Orleans. The N.O. Marine said it was "Nor'lins" and pops wouldn't back down - "no, it's New Or-leens" He said his amateur boxing came in handy that night. :D

    There's no Wawa in Mahwah.

I grew up near Ho-Ho-Kus. On Christmas morning it's guaranteed to be on every weatherman's map. Manunka Chunk is also awesome.

And when i saw REM at the Garden State Arts center many yrs ago, Michael Stipe was bantering on-stage between songs and was cracking up because he saw the "Cheesequake Service Area" sign on the Parkway. Wanted to know what the hell a cheesequake was. :D

    At the moment.
    http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2013/01/wawa_in_mahwah_some_day_chain.html
In January 2013, there were 238 in NJ, probably closer to 250 now, if not more.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesequake,_New_Jersey
    Similar pronounciation to:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weequahic,_Newark
and of course you are familiar with Passaic.

Those damn Indians & their stupid names again!

I know Weequahic roughly translates into "place with trash-strewn empty lots, prostitutes and roaming pitbulls"

    Trilla in Wasilla continues...

    http://gawker.com/track-palin-was-charged-with-assault-last-night-1753857153

As first reported by Gawker, online court records show that Track Palin, 26, was charged yesterday with assault in the fourth degree (domestic violence), interfering with a report of domestic violence, and possession of a weapon while intoxicated. In a press release, Wasilla Police say they responded to a disturbance at around 10 p.m. last night, and that “an investigation revealed Track Palin had committed a domestic violence assault on a female, interfered with her ability to report a crime of domestic violence, and possessed a firearm while intoxicated.” All three charges are misdemeanors.

Palin's speech endorsing Trump tonight was Sarah being Sarah. Somewhere, a fact checker's head exploded.

Of Palin's 3 grandchildren, none of the Palin seed is currently married to/or involved with the other parent of said child.
