I actually played quite a few growing up. I cant believe anybody who did wouldnt laugh hysterically at what you just wrote.
Wait, you really think MLS guys at the end of the bench are what was holding the team together? That culture nonsense was MLS level marketing that you apparently bought into.
Oh, that one. South Korea in that tournament, in my estimation, went in way under rated. Those guys went on a rampage, giving hell to some strong European teams. The fact that we got a tie out of our game with them was a very good thing. They were a good team with fanatical home team support.
"Giving hell" is a good way of putting it. I'm sorry to get you pulled into this discussion, but where do fall on the reffing controversy? There are some biased accounts of those games, but I dont believe there is any way that team should have been in the semis.
Oh man. I don’t remember the details, but I do recall they had some favorable calls, to be sure. I just don’t remember the specific details, though.
This is as good of an explanation as I have seen. Many of the player problems have arisen since those guys have been phased out.
If a Roldan on the bench could help stop the entrenched starters from taking the stupid, selfish red cards, I’m all for it.
The reffing was terrible in the Italy and Spain games. It went both ways, but most of the bigger decisions went SK's way. The list of those calls is long... no way that SK shouldn't have had players suspended for the Spain game that SK won on PKs after Spain had two goals incorrectly called back (i think there was also a questionable no call in PKs). I have a hard time being positive about SKs performances other than they worked hard. The tactics were pretty awful and surprised anyone would be proud of them besides a Korean Nietsche.
I guess if you ignore Acosta, Canouse, Brooks, Mckennie, de la Torre, Miazga, Scally, Reyna, etc. I look forward to more absurd spin from you guys.
I don’t know man, they were a nightmare to play against. The reffing did go their way though. A little subconscious home team bias perhaps.
They were hard to play against because they were athletic, hard working, organized, and they were allowed to beat the shit out of teams. If it weren't for they last bit, I'd say they played solid defensive soccer, fought hard, and got some breaks. This is basically the recipe for a team of this level to get results beyond their talent. It is what we did in 94, and lesser extent 2002, 2010 and 2014. I dont know why people need to try to make this into a great team or our 2002 team being materially better than rest (probably just because the SK argument is really about he usmnt in 2002). I dont rate any of our four teams/coaches that advanced better than the other, but am glad we graduated from where we needed to play in 1994 for results. Just realized I left 2022 out. I got to think about how I view vs the others.
This video was put together to try to prove a scandal. There were plenty of Italian fouls not shown. I dont see anything more than south korea being "a nightmare to play against". I wouldn't hold this up as some great soccer team and semifinalists of WC isnt how I would start describing them. There are tons of videos and articles out there if you are interested.
The European teams were at a low point in that World Cup and several strong teams crashed out early. Turkey and South Korea were weaker semifinalists but Germany also was somewhat lucky to be there. England couldn’t beat 10 man Brazil, Portugal bombed, Italy was out done by Mexico and Korea, France was abysmal…Argentina didn’t click and Costa Rica was terribly unlucky. And Korea got so many calls…
Im 5 minutes in and I’ve seen 2-3 red card fouls. In the game against the US they kept holding DMB or throwing him to the ground with no calls as well. That Italy game and their next game were shocking though.
Just because European teams got worked doesn’t mean that anything was wrong with the tournament. It just means that Europhiles are whiny.
Italy were definitely no angels. If that game was played with VAR, I'm not sure they don't come close to having to abandon the game due to not enough players. Also, maybe Totti doesn't get sent off. At least the two red cards they needed to score against Portugal were fair. Kind of hard to celebrate winning on PKs against Spain when two Spain goals were mysteriously called back. I think the linesman who called the ball out (when clearly not) later admitted it was the wrong call.
