    Since the start of the Bundesliga in 1963, "kicker" magazine has chronicled the events faithfully in a multitude of ways. One of their most prominent features is the weekly rating of individual players' performances after each matchday.

    What they use to evaluate is the German schoolsystem grade rating, where the best performance equals "1" and the worst equals "6".

    On their website, Kicker recently published the average grades per season of all players since 1963 and this is a short overview of the results:

    Yet another great post!
    I'll have to spend more time to see from what I see at a glance, 2.18 Rolf Rüssmann in 1981-82 comes to a surprise....

    guess i needed to sleep before posting...

    Were the ratings back in the day lower because the players were better (which they were, if you look at the names), or because kicker wasn't as harsh?

    It's nice but not totally representative of the best german players as since the end of the 70s most have played abroad....till 2000 or so

    Hard to tell. 'Kicker' did change the grades though, in the 60s and 70s it was:

    1 = best
    2
    3
    4
    5 = worst

    Then sometime in the 1980s I think they changed it to:

    1 = best
    1.5 = second best
    2.0
    2.5
    3.0
    3.5
    4.0
    4.5
    5.0

    So a player who might have gotten away with a "3" under the old system would now perhaps get a "3.5" in the new system, which generally lowers the average.

    Indeed, it's only about the players featured in the Bundesliga. Though I wouldn't say since the end of the 70s ... mass exodus of the best players started ca. mid-1980s.

    well regardless of the kicker system, i'd say the older players with the higher ratings were still the better players than those in the 90s and 2000s.

    What's curious is how KHR gets in only twice, at 4th place, and in the 2 seasons he won the ballon d'or (which were both in the bundesliga IIRC) he only placed 4th, once. Also, simonsen only placed 4th once.

    Are these for only bundesliga matches?

    Tribute to “Der Terrier”...

    The listed stats say, he was one of the best player in the best league at the time.
    But I do get a feeling that he doesn't really get the full respect from the football world around the globe.
    He was one of the most consistence player who gave his best every single game, he (of course) could mark but also attack and play at out of his regular positions such as though a RB eh could end up as a LW when the attack didn't work (of course back then more players could do that because there were more footballers rather than forest runners like now).

    I really don't remember "Der Terrier" having any bad game, it was guaranteed that he will identified on the pitch. He was a RB but was to be found everywhere (more recent like a Davids+Nedved) and with his short height (168cm) he could play as CB. “Der Terrier” & Sepp "Die Katze von Anzing" Maier were also the backbone of the transition period from end of 1974 to WM1978.

    He was an amazing player but as many German footballers had to face in that era....here I list some of the reasons that might have been the reasons for his unpopularity....

    -Played in same era as "Der Kaiser", not elegant enough!

    -Took over the Captaincy from "Der Kaiser", not elegant enough!

    -Took over the Coaching the German NT from "Der Kaiser", not elegant enough!

    Plus compared to "Der Kaiser", who had held the World Cup on his last match of his World Cup each as a player and as the head coach......

    “Der Terrier”s last match of World Cup (which also became his last match for Germany) was the 1978's "Schmach von Cordoba"="The disgrace of Cordoba" (for Austrian it is called "Wunder von Cordoba"="Miracle of Cordoba") where the Germans not only lost the first time against (back then fierce rival) Österreich in 47 years by 2:3 but also got eliminated from the WM and most of all for "Der Terrier"....scored an own goal....

    "Der Terrier"s last match at the World Cup was the 1998's Quarterfinal lost against Croatia 0-3 eliminated and the biggest lost Germany at advanced round since 1958 3-6 against France at a World Cup....

    "Der Terrier" won the World Cup same as a player, not as a captain though like "Der Kaiser"!

    "Der Terrier" won the Euro as a coach but not a World Cup though like "Der K...." but "Der Kaiser never won the Euro as a coach!!! but wait wait....

    S**t! "Der Terrier" was injured as a player when "Der Kaiser" won in 1972....

    I hope u had enjoyed this weired post and Vielen Dank Berti! :)

    Here is a picture of "Der Terrier" with my all time favorite F1 driver Ronnie Peterson.

    Of course!

    Funny though how a relatively unknown guy like Josef Marx got the best ever rating of all players.

    What is noticeable is that defensive players and goalies usually got better grades than offensive players. Regardless of which epoch. Gerd Müller for example never got close to the Top 20 based on his grades.

    It's only for Bundesliga matches.

    well it still holds true that some players can do really well in the league but not make it into the national squad circle of a certain coach

    This is pretty true...besides the standout attacking midfield names and beckenbauer, everyone else is a defensive player....strange...

    maybe the attacking players were given a harder time because the league was so attacking to begin with

    I guess FF didnt watch the same matches as kicker then...

    hard to take these ratings seriously when a 7 time top goalscorer doesnt feature even once...not even in his 40 goal season

    no klaus fischer either...so the top 2 scorers in bundesliga history with over 630 goals between them can't crack the top 5 even once...bravo kicker!

    You've got to judge these, or any rating systems for that matter, with a grain of salt. They are all, by nature, imperfect. Football, like most other sports or art for example, is difficult to categorize and calculate scientifically. There are so many incalculable variables and events that do not figure into such a systematic approach.

    when something is so obviously flawed it deserves to be called for what it is...in this case forget the grain of salt, a truckload would be more accurate

    like this....

    season 72/73

    bayern munich - oberhausen 5:3....

    the kicker sportjournalist has judged the players in this game...

    3 bayern players was rated 4 (breitner,hoeness,beckenbauer), all other 8 bayern players got a rating 5..rating a 5 means for me this players was nearly useless...

    2 oberhausen players got a rating 2,2 others a rating 3 and 6 players got a 4 rating...

    the kickersportjournalist obviously was a bayern hater.....

    in my opinion such a kicker sportjounalist must get a lifetimeban judging players in bundesleaque games..

    gerd müller example has contributed for 3 goals in this game...in one action a shot of müller was blocked and a teamate picked up the rebound and did score a goal...müller has created a penalty and scored sucessful the penalty...müllers second goal of the game he scored with a header...i have videofootage highlights of the goals scored in this game...

    müller got a rating 5....nearly useless...lol...he was worster than every oberhausen player in this game using the judgment of this kicker idiot..

    beckenbauer never got a rating worster than 4 in a bundesleaque game in his career..

    grain of salt....???

    this is only 1 example of many...

    I have posted the rankings for forwards, midfielders and defenders here:

    Forwards

    Midfielders

    Defenders

    If you just look at forwards, Rummenigge and Simonsen did particularly well.

    Regarding the grades in the 1960s it is noteworthy to mention that from 1963 to November 1968, these grades were exclusively handed out by "Sportmagazin", not "Kicker". Both were competing magazines until they merged in November 1968 to form "kicker sportmagazin".

    "Kicker" did not give grades before that date.
