A catch-all thread to discuss past, present and future formations for the USMNT. What worked, what didn't work, what might work. Let's see where this goes.
At various points in time, nearly every relevant lineup has worked for the US - including the flat 4, empty bucket, 3-5-2, 3-4-3, even the 4-5-1. Question is what best fits our current talent. Answer: Not what Bob's been doing.
The best formation right now has to be either the 4-5-1 or a 3-5-2 (not tried recently that I can remember.) I mean, it has to be one of those right? The only real quality we have in our talent pool is at mf. It has to be a formation that allows the most mf on the pitch. I brought this up before and was pretty much laughed off the boards but if we get a new coach, one that is a tactician, a 3-6-1 might work. I know that formation is a running joke, but......I think it could work for this pool of players.
With the 4-5-1, I ask why not a 4-2-3-1? The only difference is the attacking line, lines up slightly further up the pitch. Slightly more aggressive.
