I'm surprised this isn't a bigger topic of conversation (perhaps we've got bigger things to worry about)...but what was with the black and white kits yesterday? Were they a one-time only deal (with the 5th anniversary patch relpacing the club badge), or is that going to be our new look for the next 2-3 years?

Personally, I didn't think they looked too bad, but a bit more gold would have been nice.

They announced weeks ago that the Crew would be playing in special one-time-only black and white unis that would all be auctioned off for charity after the match.

Why adidas decided to not use yellow is anybody's guess, but since we won the game (finally!) maybe we should keep them.

I guess that announcement didn't make it out to North Dakota. Thanks.

And the silent auction for them was getting up there on some of the jerseys.

i figured that since black and white is boring, and so far this season, columbus has been as well, that it matched.

of course they ended up putting out a modestly more positive performance than the previous games...

anyone know what some of those shirts ended up going for?

Out of curiosity, how much were some of them?

I bought a yellow one signed by the whole team for about sixty bucks at the Supporters' Summit auction a couple years ago. I figured it was easy enough to replicate but the jersey alone would cost more so it was a good deal, plus the money was for charity.

Mrs. Fred didn't quite see it that way, but they never do.

I heard selling prices were around $500 - $600 for some of the jerseys.

That's what I thought when I saw them on MLS Wrap. Not a bad look, better than the Yellow, but get your own look :p

    Congrats on your win.

Hey, we're just like you in that regard - we get the box from adidas, we put it on. If they sent us MC Hammer-style purple genie pants with three stripes on them, that's what we'd play in. ;)

Hejduk went for appx $700, I think. Alot of the shirts went for above $400.

i heard hejduk topped over $800 to be the high-seller.

i was out of town but really wanted scott's jersey for no other reason than at least i could put it up on the wall during crew games and pretend he was on the team and could get more than 10 minutes a game. i heard it ended up going for $300 which i easily would have paid. oh well.

the rest went around that same $300-400 range.

Will we be using the black "home" shirts they're selling on The Other Bag (replace "Other" with the vegetable) website for $44.95 for the rest of the season, or will they be using the black/white design seen yesterday with gold substituted for the white?

So, in other words, the jerseys seen on 5/15/2004 probably won't be seen again.

I hope nobody wanted Martino's jersey.

I'm sure you'll see these as much as we see our USOC Championship jersey. Too bad, I liked the gray kit. Would be nice if we had an official 3rd kit to wear once in a while. However, the big German company has much more important things to work on, like getting basketball shoes made.

I usually enjoy 3rd jerseys. I was a big fan of our first 3rd jersey, the black one with yellow and white hoops on the sleeves.

I got the 5th Anniversary jersey from the Crew Gear shop on Saturday. I thought about bidding on one of the expensive ones, but why pay all that money for a jersey that someone already wore? Plus, I wouldn't be comfortable wearing something that expensive.

I also got one of the "old"(?) black jerseys with the official name and number on it. I couldn't pass that up because all last year I was really wanting a jersey that actually said "Columbus Crew" on the front, like they wear on the field. They had 4 different players to choose from: Cunningham, Buddle, Martino, and Hejduk. I picked Frankie's jersey. Did I make the right choice?

Now, if they'd only start selling the long-sleeve jerseys, then I'd be really poor!

By the way, whatever happened to this jersey:

Was it just a test shot that was scrapped? Or might it still show up sometime this year? It seems like a waste of effort for Adidas to go through the trouble of creating it, and then decide not to use it.

    Very interesting question, actually.

Normally, adidas seems to redesign one of the shirts (home or away) every two years. The current black "home" jersey was introduced in 2002.

HOWEVER, they did actually change it a bit last year when they added "Columbus Crew" to the front. So is it two years old or only one?

And if they don't do a major redesign on the home jersey then next year (2005) the yellow will be due for a makeover as well, since the current one was introduced in 2003. And they aren't likely to give us two new ones in the same year.

Something else to bear in mind is that they have almost never introduced a new version of a uniform in the first few games. Most of the time we haven't seen the new one until early summer. Again, I have no good explanation for this.

My guess (and it's just a guess) is that we'll see that striped job this summer as a redesign of the black home uni. (One reason I'm hesitant to go out on a limb is because it doesn't have the team name on the front and I was under the impression that that was an ongoing requirement) In the past they often had a bogus jersey for sale that the team didn't wear, but they haven't done that for a few years now.

if i remember right, MLS nixed the gray jersey. they didn't approve it for MLS competitions which is why we saw it in the USOC and every now and then you saw busch wear it as a GK jersey. i really like it too, wish i would have gotten approval.

I don't recall seeing Busch in the gray, but Presthus wore it almost exclusively. He liked short sleeves, Busch doesn't seem to. And we never saw a long sleeved gray one.

Soccer Plus in Westerville had the gray ones for sale for awhile. Don't know if they have any left. Because adidas didn't make a replica in gray, the ones they had were the real McCoy game quality unis, and they ran, if memory serves, $120.

Speaking of Jerseys. I think Busch should stick with the superhero theme. I thought os Spidey every time I saw him. Maybe he thought he was Spiderman too. whatever works.
