I think Pilsner Urquell is the only one I've seen around here. I've been meaning to give it a try. I will keep on the look out for those, though.
I have not. There's not a whole lot of micro-brews around here, so my experience has been limited to BL Golden Wheat, Blue Moon, Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat, etc.
Well Indiana has some rather good craft breweries (I used to live in Bloomington). Just look for something by Three Floyds. Sounds like what you need is a decent beer store. What city do you live in? By the way, Aventinus is German, a double wheat bock. If those are the wheats you've run across, you have a lot of enjoyable exploring ahead of you. And, based on your previous statement, why in God's name would you want to shy away from IPAs? Not my favorite winter beer, by any means, but there's a lot of good IPA on the market.
I live in West Lafayette right now, though I am from around Terre Haute. The combination of being a poor college kid and only being 21 for a month has limited my experience. I'm wary of IPAs because of the bitterness, though I could be exaggerating the bitterness in my head.
Look for Three Floyds Gumball Head. It's a wheat beer, not particularly bitter, but quite complex and delicious with a fantastic texture in the mouth. Might be right up your alley and a good stepping stone into microbrews.
Check out these guys: http://www.tippyhomebrewers.org/ It's the local homebrew club. Been around a long time. Obviously, it's geared for homebrewers, but fans-of-good-beer are always welcomed. No harm in attending an up-coming meeting and seeing what it's like. Thing is - assuming they meet at homebrew friendly establishments (like someone's house) - you get to taste a lot free beer this way, and learn a helluva lot about beer in the process.
Sadly, health issues forced me to the conclusion that I needed to take a break from drinking beer for a while. However, I still like reading about beer, and found this article enjoyable. Don't miss the link for Part 2 at the bottom.
Russian River has very limited distribution to begin with, and they do not bottle Pliny the Younger. Either you go to a place where it is on tap (CA, OR, or WA), or you get somebody to buy one of their growlers, fill it up, and send it to you. If you are a beer nerd like me, it is always worth the effort. It is number one on Beer Advocate for a reason - the best beer I have ever had.
And, if you're not in California, only about five or six bars in Oregon and Washington get 5 gallon kegs so you better be at one of those bars within a half hour of them tapping their keg if you want some. The only easy way to get Russian River's beers is to go to their brewery, which is a great place with great food, but isn't in the most convenient of locations. They also distribute to Philadelphia, IIRC.
Is this available ? On the advice of several posters on this thread, I went to my favorite local adult beverage store and inquired. The (usually) highly knowledgible staff suggested that Brooklyn is no longer making Local 1. They suggested a Pranqster from North Coast Brewing in CA. Its in the fridge now. I will report on it later.
I had it the other night at my local Winking Lizard with dinner. I have not checked my local beer supplier yet but I was going to check tomorrow. Edit: Per the BB website it's available all year round.
Didn't get to the Prankster yet. Instead had an Arrogant Bastard for the first time. Shared it with the wife in the hot tub yesterday. Very nice. A hoppy caramel colored brown ale with a kick.
