I'm working on a series about the best players in World Cup history and am looking for any available information on a number of tournaments not so far covered on BigSoccer, starting with the 1930 World Cup. If you have any available information, particularly from contemporary sources, please do drop it in here. Wikipedia quotes a 1930 team of the tournament exists but it is unclear if it a contemporary selection or a more recent effort by ESPN in Mexico. In 1982 it was the choice even for "La Gazzetta dello Sport" (in the book "Mundial 1930-1982"). Anyway I think it is a "quite official" All-Star-Team (probably selected by 1930-press). In 1994 IFFHS printed a "definitive report" on WC 1930. Tough tournament to figure out. I think there is a case to make that only Argentina/Uruguay players should get *** based on the gulf in class between them and the others. Uruguay were really a level above Yugoslavia when they met. Other than that the only other thing I might do is possibly have Evaristo and Gestido a bit higher. The impression I remember getting was that they were equal to their more famous halfback teammates Monti and Andrade.
Evaristo was featured a bit in selections discussed on this thread Pre-War Personalities and Their Best Players | Page 4 | BigSoccer Forum There was a Twitter post/posts with various XIs from 1977, and Raimundo Orsi put him in his (the thread is no longer visible I think, but his XI was posted on the Big Soccer thread): "Orsi, 1977: Plánička — J. Evaristo, Figueroa, Beckenbauer, Marzolini — Moreno, Sárosi — Sindelar, Di Stéfano, Pelé, Puč." He was one player Otto Nerz had in his selection (as left half - @msioux75 explained that he had played on the left in the Olympics, while normally he played on the right), but the Hungarian journalist Kepessey's piece stated actually that he didn't feel he or Monti belonged in such an XI in his opinion.... None of that is specific to the 1930 World Cup anyway, but some guys including Orsi held him in high esteem clearly (and feasibly as modern right back, indicating that he was more side back than centre mid in his game play I suppose in effect, as wing half).
