Very good stuff again. Great rating for Gough. He must have had 2 fives and a four. Highest average of any player in the tournament.

Other than his two free kick goals, what was so dangerous about Hassler really? What did he produce? I see no way how it can be better than Bergkamp and Laudrup his performance. Both were better and more dangerous + productive than him in the head-to-head matches, and not just because they won.
I also think a 4 for MvB in the Denmark game is quite harsh (even though not in his best form or physical state). https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2d7ztl From 25:00 onward - he produced a handful things I'd say.
Okay maybe just maybe he's the only player on the pitch when it comes to a penalty shoot-out who failed to get it on, therefore had a major 'impact' on the result in losing the team that dramatic game. Perhaps sometimes it be need to looked at the ratings for bigger picture.
On second thought, Tomas Brolin definitely at the top ten instead of Ingesson. It was criminal left him out of the top spots, he was quite clearly the best Swedish player at tournament, put a strong display against Denmark plus another big game, another big goal with much pressure against England, two big performances enough to secured Sweden's place in the Semi-final thanks to him.
That was euro 1992 for me, for his goals, his great performance against Germany, his effortless switching between defense and midfield. By any means euro 1988 was not 'decidedly' his best. The bigger picture for me is that he got his penalty on target near the corner, and low. It could/should have been better taken but it was an all-time great goalkeeper and he didn't put his penalty high in the sky or at waist height. Furthermore, it's obvious he created a handful things during the match, and made space for the team-mates around him as well (including the eventual goalscorers). Thus a 4 is out of bounds. Agree on Brolin, do not agree on Hassler.
My favourite type of header that requires a great deal of technique (timing, tremendous power and accuracy) Interesting how one could rewrite half of football history with VAR Geoff Hurst 66 (did it actually cross the line) Maradona 86 (could England beat Argentina in extra time or hold them till the penalty shootout-where they always spectacularly fail) Maybe could start a thread for this
Well, Rijkaard's famously known for constantly stepping up and perform always great on a big stage whether internationally, the European club competition (Milan, Ajax) or crucial World Cup Qualifiers (the famous Rotterdam match against England 93 for great performance from both sides who might get through and follow Norway steps), so which is better it's a matter of taste and opinions, the 2 top performances are very close (your great post and information #16 of Euro 88 thread backed up on this), if someone deciding to create a list of the greatest footballers in European Championship history from 1960 to 2016, he certainly wont falls out of top 5-7 of all time, while many great players had just one single individual a top-notch tournament, he has done this twice 88 & 92. As for Hassler, the overview for analysing lists go by the rating but to answer your question precisely must re-watch the tournament to see his overall display besides the two free-kick as mentioned above, for what I remember most that he was on top form and one of the tournament's brightest stars among those that catch your eye easily, maybe he had a high midfield work-rate involved all over the pitch and touched the ball more than any German player or maybe he did a lot for the team and literally carry them on the road to the final, moreover, when his team had it bad by losing twice out of a total 5 (it could also be mentioned against CIS) still was the best German player on the pitch despite finished both games 'without scoring' 6.5 in terms of Italian ratings (7/10) means he did have a good game in the final though. By looking at the ratings, Germany made it all the way to the final and Karl-Heinz Riedle the one player who barely trying to catch him there is a big gap in performances and it shows that lots of the world champions members were poor/underperformed in this tournament.
Hello, As today is the 30th anniversary of the final, I’ve just posted on my blog about Euro 92 – https://the1888letter.com/1992-european-championship-finals/ – and have full player ratings from Match and Shoot! (I also checked World Soccer, which doesn’t seem to have any, or even a ‘team of the tournament’). I include the individual matches from Shoot! and have summarised their ratings: Gough, Laudrup (8.00), Larsen, Rijkaard (7.75), McAllister, McStay (7.67), Sammer (7.50), Hässler, Povlsen (7.40), Blanc, McPherson (7.33) Andersen, Bergkamp, Brolin, Eriksson, Van Basten (7.25), Schmeichel (7.20) Taking some liberties with an unusual 3-5-1-1 due to the lack of recognised strikers, this could also produce a team of: Schmeichel; Blanc/McPherson, Gough, Sammer; Larsen, Rijkaard, McAllister, McStay, Hässler; Laudrup; Povlsen. I know the English magazine ratings aren’t always the most reliable, but it’s another perspective on the tournament.
I have compiled the ratings from the following sources, some from this forum: "Match", "France Football", "Gazzetta dello Sport", "Guerin Sportivo", "L'Unità", "La Republicca" and "Marca". Taking all of them into account, the best averages were the following: Larsen (Denmark): 7.14 Hassler (Germany): 7.12 Gough (Scotland): 7.08 Kharin (Russia): 6,95 Schmeichel (Denmark): 6.94 Brolin (Sweden): 6.87 Brian Laudrup (Denmark): 6.83 McStay (Scotland): 6.80 Rijkaard (Netherlands): 6,78 Jensen (Denmark): 6.70 McAllister (Scotland): 6,65 Eriksson (Sweden): 6,62 Povlsen (Denmark): 6,55 Andersen (Denmark): 6,54 Bergkamp (Netherlands): 6.50 Walker (England): 6.50 Olsen (Denmark): 6.48 Schwarz (Sweden): 6.48 Thern (Sweden): 6.42 Papin (France): 6.40 Christofte (Denmark): 6.39 Vilfort (Denmark): 6.36 Buchwald (Germany): 6.33 Dahlin (Sweden): 6.33 Gullit (Netherlands): 6.30 Van Basten (Netherlands): 6,28 Sibevaek (Denmark): 6.27 Koeman (Netherlands): 6,26 Witchsge (Netherlands): 6.26 Pearce (England): 6.25

I'll probably be able to continue with the La Stampa ratings another time, but for now maybe it's interesting to do a quick 'Anglo-Italian' ratings mash up for semi-finals and final, using Shoot and La Stampa, since England were out, Italy didn't qualify, and there are some variations between the two sources for those games for sure (the Shoot ones being in general higher as would be expected though too): Final: Denmark: Schmeichel 7.75, Sivebaek 7, Olsen 7, Nielsen 7, Piechnik 7, Chistofte 7, Jensen 7.5, Vilfort 7.5, Povlsen 7, Larsen 7, Laudrup 8 Germany: Illgner 5.5, Reuter 5.5, Brehme 5.25, Kohler 6, Helmer 5.5, Buchwald 6, Hassler 6.5, Sammer 7 (Doll 5.75), Klinsmann 5.5, Effenberg 5.5, Riedle 5.5 Swe-Ger semi-final (I think what Shoot publish right is which Nilsson Limpar came on for actually too, but they don't give Limpar a rating anyway: I'd written Limpar's rating in the same place La Stampa had put it in my above post) Sweden: Ravelli 6.25, R.Nilsson 6.75, Eriksson 6, Bjorklund 5.75, Ingesson 6, Thern 6, Brolin 6.5, Andersson 6.25, Dahlin 6, Ljung 6, J.Nilsson 5 Germany: Illgner 6.25, Reuter 7.5, Buchwald 7, Brehme 7.75, Kohler 6.5, Helmer 7.25, Hassler 7.5, Sammer 8, Riedle 7.75, Effenberg 6.75, Klinsmann 6.5 Den-Ned semi-final: Denmark: Schmeichel 7, Sivebaek 6.5, Andersen 7.5, Olsen 6.75, Piechnik 6.75, Christofte 6.5, Larsen 8, Jensen 6.5, Povlsen 7.5, Vilfort 6.5, Laudrup 8; Netherlands: Van Breukelen 6, Van Tiggelen 6, De Boer 5.5, Koeman 5.5, Wouters 6, Witschge 6.25, Gullit 5.5, Rijkaard 6, Van Basten 5.5, Bergkamp 7, Roy 5

Good contribution. If you have the ratings for the rest of the games, I'll add them to the spreadsheet.
At this moment, and with the one @PDG1978 just posted, I have 8 proposals for the ideal XI of the tournament. In this table they appear in order of score, knowing that every time a player appears in the first ideal team, he accumulates 5 points, if he appears as a substitute or in a second ideal team, he accumulates 4 and so on.
Here below is some information that is not well known. It is the score of the top 10 of the "Adidas Golden Ball" award for the choice of the best player of the event. I don't know who and how they voted. I would appreciate if someone can give more information on this. Aquí abajo una información que no es muy conocida. Es la puntuación de los 10 primeros del premio "Adidas Golden Ball" para la elección del mejor jugador del evento. Desconozco quiénes ni cómo votaron.
