this is a question to ponder on,who is the greatest english player to date in your opinion,if i'd have said british george best would have won by a mile! so ENGLISH only i'll start with the late great bobby moore. even tho i support man utd so could ave chosen charlton , but moore in his day was peerless!
CLUE LESS THEN ? the two votes for the neville's and one non vote? so you dont know anything about football then?
He's before my time, and probably before the time of everyone here...but I thought Sir Stanley Matthews was the consensus pick as the greatest English player ever?
It's incredibly difficult to name just one. Worthy of mention for me would be: Vivian Westwood Stanley Matthews Bobby Charlton Bobby Moore Gordon Banks Kevin Keegan
Sir Stanley Matthews is probably the right answer. Wasn't there a player for ManU who was killed in the 58 Munich crash who was expected to be a phenom? Duncan somethingorother?
Its very difficult to say who the best English player of all time is. Waddle dont make me laugh, he was a very good player, but not the greatest. A proper assessment is difficult because some played before TV coverage, and the main sources of ability are from written records and fading memories. Pre WW1 - Billy Meredith ( i think he was English, but if not please accept my apologies) Inter War- Dixie Dean, anyone who can score 60 goals in a season must be good. The 60 goal record still stands. There are a number of great players of the 40's and 50's who started playing in the late 30's. Post War 50's Stanley Matthews Tom Finney Duncan Edwards 60's Bobby Charlton Gordon Banks Bobby Moore Jimmy Greaves 70's - I think this is when it becomes harder to name players Kevin Keegan Peter Shilton 80's Bryan Robson (a player who pulled England through many a tough game) 90's I think we should let the dust settle a bit first.
