What's the..... What's the best DC United match that you have ever attended? As ive only been to one it has to be that one earlier this season against the LA Galaxy where we won 1-0 in Overtime thanks to a Convey goal
Best game ever This is a very hard decision, but a couple games do stick out to me: 3. dc vs rochester for 96 open cup- wasnt the most amazing game but was more like a welcome home party from mls cup. 2. dc vs rapids-mls cup 97 just seeing rfk sold out for a dc game was awesome. 1. dc vs vasco at rfk- even though we lost this game it was truly amazing seeing dc give one of the best teams in the world a run for their money. runnersup- every single dc-crew playoff game that we eliminated them. MLS Cup 99 was also a great one to be in attendance for.
MLS Cup '97 wins for me. The thought of a sold-out stadium chanting "DC" in unison still brings chills down my spine. Games 3 in 98 and 99 against the Crew were also spectacular for the atmosphere and the dominance. I think a better thread is what the best _regular season_ games people have attended are. I think of the 5-0 rout of Colorado in '97 (with MLS' first-ever all-American lineup b/c Etch, Jaime, and RDA were off on WCQ duty), the 3-2 win over Chicago early in 2000 with Olsen scoring the injury time winner after we'd gone down 2-1 late (which also included an incredibly Stoitchkov free kick goal), and, of course, the last game of this past season.
1. MLS Cup '97 - It's all been said above, so nice! 2. '99 Eastern Conference Finals Game 3 - Bouncing back from a thrashing in Game 2, the Crew continue their futility at RFK, with Lassiter providing the Coup de Grace with the mini-bike. 4-0 3. '96 Eastern Conference Semi-Final Game 3 - What's better than taking down the Mutts? Big crowd, electric night, and I got to sit in the old bleachers behind the goal before they removed them. 4. 2000 Regular Season vs. Chicago - As also mentioned above, Olsen gets the injury time winner. (3-2) An amazing comeback AND the game included Stoichkov's sick freekick goal. It made me believe we'd still be good in 2000. 5. '97 Season Opener vs. Metros - RFK is rocking, still on a high from the '96 Championship. Meola stands on his head, making (what I believe) was an MLS single game save record, but we still shut down the Metro attack and win 1-0.
Hopefully this summer im gona be coming to coach soccer to kids in the DC area as part of my college course so if i do im gonna try and get to see a few more games
Regular season: 1997 vs Tampa Bay. Down 2-0 at half, United comes back and wins 3-2. MLS Cup '97 though is the highlight of my United fandom, with MLS Cup '99 close behind.
Good selections, all. One game that's often overlooked is the 2-0 victory over Leon in CONCACAF 98. Despite Leon's attempts at thuggery, and getting no help from Prendergast, we rose to the occasion and put on a display that I don't think we've ever equalled, and that includes Vasco II (which I was also at). The victory over Toluca two days later was quality, also, but Leon sticks out as the better display.
One of my personal favorites was July 10, 1998. DC United 3 - Los Angeles Galaxy 0. The Galaxy may have had the best record in MLS at that point and United was pumped, came out like banshees and spanked the Galaxy. A crowd of 23,000+ watch Harkes, Lassiter and Moreno score. Hermosillo gets ejected, RFK was rocking, and United was rolling! Plus I really hate the Galaxy so it was doubly sweet!
MLS Cup '97 has to be tops. It's a shame that no one will ever think of it, but that has to be one of best games ever in DC, in any sport. Might I also submit the first home game against the Scum this past season? They scored first when Faria hit a PK in what seemed to be the opening kickoff, then we tied it through a goal by Moreno, then Lisi scored again and kissed his shield, and then Villegas tied it again. Then Etch hits one through Howard's hands and Moreno hits what probably will be his final goal in a DC shirt. For one game, we looked like the United of old. It was a nice throwback feeling. Sachin
The final score was 2-1, with a late winner by Jaime. Meola _was_ excellent in that match. This, incidentally, was the infamous "bottle rocket" match, wasn't it?
A couple to mention. The 2000 Chicago deluge match. Mentioned a couple of times above, but Benny's inablity to accept defeat lead to TWO injury time goals....he got the assist on the tying goal, before nailing the winner. Oh, I met my wife at that game. The 'away' leg against Vasco in Ft. Lauderdale. The last game of the 'Classic United' squad.
I'm with Dave on this one.. No doubt in my mind... United 2 Leon 0 Best played game ever by a United team.. Best atmosphere ever was MLS Cup 97' with 57,000 strong in heavy rain and cold temps....
[R] 2003 MLS Cup 2003 MLS Cup. DC United wins at the Home Depot National Training Center on a Santino shot crossed in by the almost-traded Justin Mapp. Reyes named MVP. Ooops, do I need an [R] in the subject line? -Tron
I spoke to my dad and he's been to 2 games and he says his favourite was the 1st game he went to against the Metrostars a few years ago i dont know what the score was i think 2-2 and DC won in the shootout
1999's playoff final v Columbus is my favorite by far. Even enjoyed Thomas Boswell's write up in the Post suggesting other DC teams should have bought tickets to witness how championship teams play. The 1997 Cup was great as well. I've always liked this game, too. IIRC, because of WCQ call-ups, we were essentially playing with our 'B' squad (5 starters missing?). I still think the 1998 team was the best of all, despite letting the cup go that year.
No, that was a few weeks after Eddie and Goose came back. You might be thinking of the 1999 game in LA when our bench beat them 2-0 because we wanted to rest our starters going into CONCACAF. Clint Peay's last ever game and he scored. Dave
