I don't live in Philly so my opinion counts nil, but it seems like when you are creating a team in a region of the nation that has more history than almost anywhere else in the country that you would rather use something local than a name like Cosmos.

Do we really Galaxy in the west and Cosmos in the east?

I'm very excited for Philly and was hoping that they would get a team. Chester should also prove to be one of the most beautiful stadium sites on camera (though I reserve that title for my club's mountain background). It seems like everything is falling perfectly in place for what will be an incredible club...I hope the name fits in nicely with everything else that is going so nicely.

(Yes, I already know..."WHAT? A RSL fan commenting about good team names?!? PLEASE!"...I didn't name the team, and I'm just observing yours from afar)

I have to say that I am not thrilled with that name. It would be a good name for the second New York franchise if it ever comes but naming a team here the Cosmos would have been like naming a USFL or WFL or whatever FL team here the Cowboys. Beyond the obvious NASL reference the league already has the Galaxy and do we really need another Astronomy themed club name? Also, what do the Cosmos have to do with Philadelphia other than we are in it like everyone else?

Ror the record, the original "Cosmos" name of the NASL wasn't used as the singular "cosmos" (with an 's' sound at the end) but as the plural of "cosmo", ie Cosmos (with a 'z' sound at the end).

"Cosmos" was short for "cosmopolitans" just as "Mets" is short for "metropolitans". As far as I know, the name wasn't based on astronomy.

And I'd still go.

apart from galaxy/cosmos deal and the next rebranding of dynamo in houston shuttles...
if ever, that name (with all its soccer background) belongs only to the eventual nyc franchise. philly could easily get other names, fitting much more to the history of the city.

I will say that when I read that name I threw up a little in my mouth. It just doesn't make any sense.

What's wrong with New Jersey exactly?

You know, New Jersey, that state you can see from where your new stadium will be.

But yes, Cosmos would be a stupid name for a Philadelphia area team, even id that team was in southern New Jersey.

There isn't anything wrong with it for teams called New York playing in New Jersey. However, it doesn't and won't resonate here. We will actually be able to see three states from our stadium.
