Sure that structure is common. But I thought that in recent years, under Arteta (or maybe Emery) there was one captain and then 3-4 vice captains, and I thought those VC's were all kinda equal, that there wasn't a strict pecking order. Or at least the club didn't really publicize the explicit hierarchy. Anyway, that's why I was asking before, after hearing MA's comments, what's our pecking order? Laca, KT, then who? Also, Nketiah brought the armband to Xhaka first. Is there any chance that Xhaka is a VC now?? That would really surprise me based on the whole debacle of him being stripped of captaincy a few years ago.
Wow, I had missed or forgotten that. Before Auba left I guess? When 3 or more higher up captains weren’t on the pitch?
We are going to regret not bringing in a tall alternative. If we had a decent header of the ball, we would have won comfortably.
I doubt it, he turns 30 in August. Unless Burnley would take a loan just to get his wages off their books.
Maybe Arteta should change tactics, focusing on cutbacks and crosses played on the ground to near post runs instead of crosses played in the air to a 5-9 forward who has never demonstrated that he is very good at scoring headed goals. Cedric was credited with 16 crosses by WhoScored, (which may have included the corner kicks he took, but only four of them found an Arsenal head.
We have been cross and inshallah with Arteta since he came in. Its frustrating because if we had a 6'2 striker or taller in the squad, we would have an extra 20 goals a season. You are right though, Arteta needs to work with what he has. Twitter today is filled with lots of people saying try ESR at 9 since Laca isn't working, but that doesn't fix the issue.
I said this in another match thread, but this isn't true anymore. Brentford was an aberration; we're 17th in the league in cross attempts this season. We were 3rd in that stat last season. We're on pace to cross about 115 fewer times than last season.
I imagine it’s an aberration this season because Tomiyasu and Cedric are completely different types of full backs. But someone has to make an adjustment when Cedric is playing.
Haha. But honestly, maybe he deserves a bit more credit for how he's done deputizing for Tommy? I can say that I haven't really been too focused on Cedric during these recent games, but I can also say that he hasn't jumped out at me as being a big problem or liability. And the scuttlebutt I've heard on recent podcasts leaned more towards giving him some kudos, if stopping short of effusive praise. And as for the crosses, one cute comment by someone (Gunnerblog?) was that if we'd had a ST like Calvert-Lewin in the box, probably some of those Cedric crosses/corners would've become goals.
If we had a genuine aerial threat, teams would make more of an effort to stop crosses from coming in at all. As it stands, the best defensive gameplan you can have against Arsenal is to let them cross at will.
Arsenal basically play with no 9 Just a muscle bound goon who wrestles with the centre back It's remarkable how in transition he can't make any run
honestly, that feels like a decent complement for a defender. i mean, sure, no big offensive contribution but that's not the role of our right-back anyway. but a defender drawing attention is generally a sign of messing up. so, i think you have a point there that him being a non-focus is actually indicative of a pretty decent shift put in.
I’d have to go back and look, but I’m pretty sure that was someone on this thread. But the point is Arsenal don’t have DCL or anyone like him, so the way Arsenal plays crosses into the box has to change.
Kinda hoping we beat Wolves again, and that we really go over the top with the celebration to ******** with them. But then I saw who our official is, Martin Shitheel Atkinson. Still not over denying a clear goal for Sokratis against Palace.
Cedric was a head scratcher and not the signing folks wanted, but he's been good when called upon most of the time. About as good as you could ask for from a back up fullback.
