This is the problem with Japan and Korea even in the real WC. Hence they could cause upset at group stage beating teams like Spain and Germany, but never prevail at round 16.

They should have been up 2-0 or 3-0 at this point, somehow we know France probably gonna squeeze through. And there goes another golden opportunity. France defence looks really open for scoring.

 

Somebody should tell the Japanese players you’re allowed to chip the goalie. It is perfectly legal.

USA hasn't exited at group stage since 2006. But yeah R16 is basically the same hurdle for them as Mexico, except for the one time they got to beat Mexico in it.

 

I would consider not qualifying in 2018 as worse than a group stage exit. So that blows the hole in consistency.

A quick check on MLS table, appearently Miami has scored the most goals but has one of the worst defence in the league , conceiding 50+ goals.

 

Brazil blew a 2-0 lead to lose to Japan 3-2. So much for Ancelotti solving everything for them.

 

Japan beat Spain in 2022 WC in similar fashion. They only lost to Croatia only from penalties.

 

Japan is a great watch. Stereotypically fantastic work-rate throughout the team, and these last years they've started to produce some individually pretty good players as well.
