Blackburn and Manchester United have played 100 league games, that simply wouldn't happen if they weren't in the same competition, unless you can explain how they have managed to play each other on so many occasions yet not be in the same competition I'd like to hear it?

But the US has 330 million people!! Apples to Oranges! Instead lets compare California to England (a much closer comparison), football ALONE draws in 40 million people +, as for rugby, cricket and all the other sports...........yes including basketball then I imagine that equates to TENS of millions too - and in California? There are 51 horse racetracks in England alone!

Your problem is that you are American and with all due respect you have no idea when it comes to the English sporting landscape, no doubt you are one of those - "they only have football in Europe" Americans? Perhaps along with "they don't play American Football because they're too poor" and other such nonsense?

Texas is more than 5 times the size of England but has less people in it than California, so not as 'well' matched.

More than 40 million people watched pro football in England last year that's more than 72% of the population, 72% of 332 million is 240 million.

    Anyway apples to oranges.

72% of the population of England did not watch football in England last year.

100 times in 135 years because a lot of the time they've been in different competitions.

Yep I think slow and steady improvement targeting players that will improve the league as a whole is better than suddenly letting the brakes off and inevitably signing dozens of mid-tier, aging European players

And to what end when stadiums are full, TV subscriptions are encouraging and sponsorship is at a record high. You're not going to attract existing EPL, BL, NFL or NBA fans while your payrolls are an still an eighth of theirs.

    Steady, organic growth.

And that's because those towns were independent and fairly wealthy towns in their own rights, whereas today East Lancashire is basically a suburb of Manchester.

American towns, particularly in the West, grew around the big cities. People look to the big cities for their professional entertainment.

What makes you think letting off the brakes will make all MLS FO all of a sudden go after aging European players?

And those mid-tier European players are the ones that should be and are being the targets! MLS needs more of those. Didn't you see what a bench player from Juventus (Giovinco) did in MLS? Or what Mukhtar is doing? Even Cucho who couldn't crack it in Europe is a big signing here. Those are the type of players that should be more of in MLS and looseing the salary budget will get them here. I don't know in what world wanting mid tier Euro players is bad for a any league. Just look at the Brazilian league in players like Pedro or Gabigol that couldn't crack it in Europe but are top players in the Brazilian league. Or what Sergio Canales and Idrissi are doing in Liga MX and they were mid tier Euro players. Or Gignac!

The other factor in this: those American towns that grew independently of cities were relatively new and had limited infrastructure in the early days of organized team sports. In many towns, it would have been difficult to start a club from scratch, but the local high school (or college if it was a college town) was one of the biggest institutions in town and often already had some sports facilities, which led most American team sports to grow around schools rather than clubs.

I don't think I said 72% of people in the English the population watched football? - let me clarify more than 40 million people went through the turnstiles in the pro league last year how many individuals we'll never know and that 40 million is 72% of the population!

I then said that 72% of 330 million (the population of the us) is 240 million.

    Both facts are true

Blackburn Rovers would not have played Manchester United (Premier League), Derby County (League 1) or Notts County (League 2) if they were not all competing in the same competition.

If you really can't see why they have to divide the league into divisions then i really don't know what to say!

Unless you can explain why Blackburn Rovers have played league games against those teams without being in the same competition then I'd like to hear it..........if you want an example of a 'different competition' then ask yourself why Chelsea have never played a league game against Juventus?

This is probably a different thread.

How much more should MLS spend and how should they spend it?

So every person that went through a turnstile was unique. Interesting.

This tells me you don't understand promotion and relegation.

Not how much but how should they spend it. MLS has too many rules and restrictions. Even the own MLS Sporting Directors have said so and have even suggested simplifying the rules would make for better rosters.

I don't think I said that!? Try reading again perhaps? How about this if it helps to clarify:-

Fact is the turnstiles spun OVER 40 million times last season, thats 40 million people spinning them and 40 million IS 72% of the population.
    72% of 330 million is 240 million.

I know EXACTLY what promotion and relegation is, its a way to to split a league of 92 clubs so that you can fit the games into a calendar year and therefore a 'season' doesn't have to last a decade.

    Hows that?

Still talkimg about pro/rel these mls fans will never admit their league with out it is just sunday league.i mean if it was 50 years old you could have history tradition and so on but it is only 25 years old where biggest accoplishments teams have is if they scored at their every opening match of season is bound to fail. And add to that owners who care more about money and how other leagues are run and try to keep this sport down as compliment to their main passion nba or nfl and soccer will never lift off here

As far as I can tell, this is suggesting that pro/rel makes time pass twice as fast.

    Theory of general pro/relativity?

Wow a 600 mile round trip! In the US we call that a derby.

Having an owner called Dai Yongge is not a good omen.

?? Are we supposed to feel sorry for them? If Reading are being punished then it's for a reason, if it's a financial reason then they've only got themselves to blame NOBODY forces ANY club to spend money they don't have!

What is it about Americans that hate socialism with a passion unless its sport. Reading turn over more money than 99.9% of clubs in this country and if they can't operate on such riches then perhaps they are suffering from extremely bad management.
