SEVEN ACC MEN’S SOCCER PROGRAMS RANKED IN UNITED SOCCER PRESEASON POLL #4 - Wake Forest #6 - UNC #9 - Notre Dame #10 - Duke #12 - UVa #14 - Louisville #16 - VPI NC State lands just outside the Top 25. Syracuse and Clemson also receiving votes. Big10 next closest conference with 4 teams (UMD, IU, MSU, Mich).
Notre Dame is WAY too high. No way there top 10, or even top 6 in the acc, with the production they lost from last years team
ACC Predictions 1) Wake 2) UNC 3) Duke 4) UVA 5) Lville 6) VTech 7) NC State 8) Notre Dame 9) Clemson 10) Pitt 11) Syracuse 12) BC I was tempted to put Duke at #1, but I don’t wanna jinx it
Nevermind Duke being #1 now. They literally keep making me madder and madder with every passing week, as someone new keeps getting taken off the roster. This week is grad student Kevin Feucht. Missed 2017 and last year, and shoulda been eligible this year, but is suddenly gone with no explanation from anyone, of course. Woulda been our second best scorer. Now we literally have Proch as a scoring option, and NOBODY else. Ryyan, Duke and now Feucht, all gone. Fml
That’s an “if”, as he’s an unproven freshman. Even if he does, Duke has little offensive firepower now. Better hope the defense can shut opponents out
North Carolina, Virginia, Wake Forest, Maryland, UCLA, Akron, Indiana, Stanford, Washington, UCSB, Furman, UConn and a few others I'm forgetting have had so many players turn pro early the past 20 years it literally altered the course of college soccer history. All those programs likely would've won a couple more trophies if they hadn't had so many player consistently leave early. That Duke avoided it for so long simply meant they weren't getting that caliber of player most of the past 20 years, hence Duke only going to one Final Four since MLS started. Now the Blue Devils are a legit consistent College Cup threat. But the trade-off is having to go out and get the type of talent that wants to and does leave school early. Them's the breaks in modern college soccer.
True, but he's a very known quantity to John Kerr--played on Kerr's club team for several years and was local to Duke until 3 years ago.
Yeah, not good. Up 2-0, and give up that lead?! Bad. This is a S.C. team that was downright bad last year! Smh
It is never good to give a 2-0 lead. I know coaches who say that the 2-0 lead is the most dangerous lead in soccer. Here is another motto for you: "Past performance is not indicative of future results"
In what is becoming a tradition (along with Wake Forest being picked to win the Atlantic).. NORTH CAROLINA TABBED AS PRESEASON ACC MEN'S SOCCER FAVORITE 2019 ACC Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll Overall Champion North Carolina, 9 Duke, 1 Virginia, 1 Wake Forest, 1 Atlantic Division Wake Forest, 64 (9) Louisville, 48 (1) Syracuse, 42 (1) NC State, 38 Clemson, 36 (1) Boston College 18 Coastal Division North Carolina, 65 (10) Virginia, 46 (1) Duke, 45 (1) Virginia Tech, 38 Notre Dame, 36 Pitt, 16 In relation to these rankings, NC State jumps out as a potential overachiever in the Atlantic along with Pitt (nowhere to go!) in the Coastal.
Seems about right except for Syracuse. They are rebuilding and way too high. State is too low, since they just heat unc this weekend
https://twitter.com/nostoppagepod Weekly college soccer podcast with a focus on ACC soccer (haven't listened).
I'll go on record as saying I think this will be the best Wake team under Muuss. Not sure that necessarily equates to an ACC Tourney or NCAA title, but I'll be shocked if they don't win the Atlantic again. There's just way too much attacking talent on the roster for them to not score goals by the boatload. (The defense may also allow a few more than is customary, but that'll just make for some nice highlights for everyone.)
Wake's defense was questionable last season and I don't think it's improved. I think that will be a major issue for them getting to where they want to be. No doubt they'll be talented offensively. Was really excited about the ACC Network showing lots of soccer but my cable carrier hasn't reached an agreement to show it and all the games that were on ESPN3 last year are now under the ACC Network banner which means I can't watch all those games anymore. And that sucks.
So my impressions from the exhibition games and UCF: the Wake defense is pretty comfortable actually defending (Cal Jennings had virtually no looks all game), but is shaky passing out of the back. The UCF goal came in desperation mode in the last minute, and the usual caveats about set pieces and height certainly still apply for the Deacs. My thought coming into the year was that Wake would add a bit defensively by replacing Dunwell, who was an excellent possession fulcrum but not a great defensive mid in terms of breaking up attacks or covering ground; I think that's likely going to be true, although it's interesting as to who is being tasked for that: Joey DeZart (last year's starter) came off the bench, and the highest regarded incoming recruit (Omar Hernandez, the Gatorade HS PoY) isn't the freshman seeing the most time... it's been sophomore Isaiah Parente and freshman Takuma Suzuki in a fairly disciplined double pivot. (Suzuki looks REALLY good, by the way.) Most of Wake's defensive problems have come from turnovers caused by high pressing the back line; that and set pieces I think will be how teams can get after Wake this year. Wake played maybe a C+ game last night and it wasn't ever really in doubt (UCF had the better of play generally in the first half but didn't generate any real chances; Wake dominated the second half). Plenty of teams on the schedule who will provide better challenges than UCF of course, but the defending itself has been pretty encouraging so far.
ACC teams go 8-2-2 in a group of openers marked by Pitt's missed opportunity and Louisville's disappointing home result. ACC - Week 1 Thursday - Aug 29 BC 2 v Quinnipiac 0 Eagles opened the season with a comfortable 2-0 win. Goals from Adam French and freshman Amos Shapiro-Thompson. Friday - Aug 30 #13 Georgetown 3 v Syracuse 1 Georgetown scored in the 74th minute to break a 1-1 tie and the 75th minute to put the game away. All four goals scored in the 2nd half. Ryan Raposo converted a PK for the Orange. #4 Wake Forest 2 v #15 UCF 1 Wake generated no 1st half shots, but cruised on 2nd half goals from All-American Bruno Lapa and forward Kyle Holcomb. See quzybuk post #21 above. Clemson 4 v South Carolina 1 Not sure this one was ever in doubt. Clemson scored 3 times in the first 21 minutes, sophomore Grayson Barber had a brace (doubling his entire 2018 output), and Clemson outshot SC 24-2. Credit to SC for scoring on their only shot on goal, which briefly tied that game at 1. Clemson/SC thread. NC State 2 v Loyola (Md.) 1 It was an all England affair in NC State's opener. Jamie Smith and Kuda Muskwe's 2nd half goals propelled State to victory in a game they statistically dominated; 17-6 shots advantage (10-1 in the 1st half). 27 fouls and 7 yellow cards. #6 UNC 2 v Creighton 2 The preseason ACC favorites erased a 2-0 halftime deficit to earn a draw against visiting Creighton. Great FK goal in the first half by Creighton. Mauricio Pineda generated 6 shots (4 SOG) and picked up one of UNC's goals. #14 Louisville 2 v Cleveland St 2 Surprising result in Louisville. Cards lead 2-0 crossing 70 minutes, but the Vikings rallied with goals in the 72nd and 83rd minutes to grab a draw. Combined 36 fouls in this one. #10 Duke 1 v Furman 0 Hassan Pinto's first career goal was the difference for the Blue Devil's in what appeared to be an evenly contested match. 4 saves from Will Pulisic in the shutout. #2 Indiana 3 v Pitt 2 - 2OT Edward Kizza kicked off his 2019 Herman campaign with a brace, but Pitt squandered a 2-0 halftime lead and IU came back to win in OT. BRF post #17 #12 UVa 2 v Pacific 0 Ira Donasiyano's brace bookended halftime in the Cavs 2-0 shutout win over Pacific. 2 assists from Daryl Dike and 4 saves for Colin Shutler. 33 fouls and 8 yellow cards. Ouch! Loyola Marymount 1 v #16 VPI 2 All-ACC midfielder Kristo Strickler's goal in the 89th minute broke a 1-1 tie and gave VPI a West Coast road win. VPI outshot 15-9 and out cornered 6-2. Saturday - Aug 31 SLU 2 v #9 Notre Dame 3 A 65th minute goal from Jack Lynn (1g, 1a) broke a 1-1 tie and a 67th minute goal from Aiden McFadden added needed insurance. Not a great Sunday for the ACC. UNC, State, Pitt all lose. UVa, VPI, and Wake pick up good wins. Looking forward to Louisville/UK tonight. ACC - Week 1 Sunday - Sep 1 #10 Duke 2 v Cal St Bakersfield 1 Daniele Proch's 75th PK broke a 1-1 tie and lifted Duke to a victory over CSU Bakersfield. Colby Agu also scored for Duke which posted a 12-4 advantage in shots and a 7-0 advantage in corners. BU 0 v BC 1 Kristofer Konradsson scored in the 4th minute and Giacomo Piccardo made 5 saves in the shutout victory. Shots (17-9) and corners (8-2) in favor of BC. 32 fouls between the two teams (16-16). Northwestern 1 v Pitt 0 Bardia Kimiavi scored in 3rd minute from a sequence that started with a goal kick. Miha Miskovic got the game winning assist and made 8 saves for Northwestern. Pitt generated 15 shots and 8 corners, but could never level the match. #4 Wake Forest 1 v Creighton 0 A 76th minute goal from freshman Calvin Harris (1) was the difference in a game controlled by Wake. Shots 13-6 and corners 7-3 in favor of the Deacons. Creighton picked up 17 fouls (4 yellow cards) to Wake's 6. NC State 0 v St. John's 1 - 2OT State's 12-match home unbeaten streak is snapped by St. John's in OT. Wolfpack had a chance to win in OT, but Jamie's Smith 98th FK hit the crossbar. Four minutes later, Tani Oluwaseyi was taken down in the box by Vincent Durand, but the senior GK saved Matt Forster's ensuing PK. Oluwaseyi finished things himself in the 107th minute off a deflected pass that squeezed through State's D. #6 UNC 1 v #15 UCF 2 UNC's disappointing opening weekend concluded with a loss to UCF. UNC lead 1-0 at halftime thanks to sophomore Alex Rose's 2nd goal of the season, but UCF got 2nd half goals from Gianluca Arangeli (2) and Hermann candidate Cal Jennings (1). UCSB 1 v #16 VPI 3 Hokies wrapped up their West Coast trip at 2-0-0, beating UCSB 3-1. VPI trailed after the 5th minute, but Jon Ingason leveled the game on a FK in the 8th and VPI got 2 goals in the 2nd half; an UCSB own goal (the winner) and Jacob Labovitz's first of his career. Monday - Sep 2 Clemson 8 v Detroit Mercy 0 The Tigers delivered a mauling to Detroit Mercy. Both teams went deep into their benches in this one. James Brighton (1g, 2a), Kimarni Smith (1g, 1a) and Grayon Barber (1g, 1a) with multi points games for Clemson. Bunch of other guys also scored (Robinson, Mbaye, Nunez, Gomez, Hall). #1 UMd 0 v #12 UVa 2 Cavs got goals from Nathaniel Crofts (1g,1a) and Daryl Dike two minutes apart and shut out the defending National Champion Terps. Colin Shutler makes only 1 save in net for UVa. Check the UMd 2019 thread. Syracuse 3 v Binghamton 1 Syracuse bounced back from their opening loss to Georgetown by defeating Binghamton. The Orange dominated despite giving up the opening goal. Big game for Ryan Raposo who was in on every score for Cuse with 2 goals (3) and an assist. Tuesday - Sep 3 #14 Louisville v #8 UK - 7:30pm - ACCNX
Tuesday - Sep 3 #14 Louisville 3 v #8 UK 0 UNCW transfer Emil Elveroth (1g, 1a) opened the scoring with a 5th minute rebound goal, Louka Masset converted a PK, and Cherif Dieye (1g, 1a, 6sh, 4sog) scored in the 82nd minute as the Cards flipped the script on UK. Louisville played down a man the final 33 minutes after Elijah Amo was sent off for fouls less than two minutes apart. UK mounted an offensive after the RC, but Gelnovatch and the goal frame were up to task. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One more week of non-conference games before the league season begins. Not nearly as many high profile match ups in week 2, but there are a few that look intriguing.
