You are right, there are two "values," the team real strength in a given year and the school's "soccer tradition."

Yasu for example is always given as a favorite after winning a few years ago, but as a matter of fact in the last two editions they were average.

I'll definitely love to see Kumiyama do well, it would be very promising for Kyoto's football...

I'm assuming these guys think they are going to be able to outdo the entire Japanese scouting network by signing 'undiscovered gems' from under the noses of J League teams?

The fact that they invited Robert Cullen for a trial should be a large indicator that they can't be taken seriously.

Wow Kumiyama in the semifinal... Really-really hard to believe for me.

BTW, one must feel sorry for Kansai 1st. this is the second year in a row they lose at Penalty, last year SF, this year QF...

Robert Cullen was picked because no other young Japanese player (or any of their agents) stood up. Their first target was Miyamoto (Sanga) who refused.

Congrats to Kumiyama! Though I fear for them in their semifinal, I'm looking forward to being there to cheer them on. Anything but the Ryutsu Keizai machine, as far as I'm concerned... And then an interesting second semi, with a chance to see the Hama-Hi combi for Dai Ni. Takigawa are the only team to have got this far without needing penalties. Probably means they are ripe for the taking. Roll on Saturday :)

I was most impressed by Yoshida of Kasiwa.
He always appears in the middle of the game because of some injury, but the team completely changes in the presence of him.

I don't like Ryukei's style very much, but he is superb.

No argument with Kumiyama being in the final - they did the job in the way that they have done the job in every round so far, patiently and effectively. Yasukawa leads the line well, but they work hard as a team. Less sure that Takigawa deserve to be there. Both sides had chances in their semi, but Rissho were more adventurous, and Takigawa - even their two ace strikers - were anonymous for much of the second half. I think I'd prefer to be going to see Rissho in the final today.

One question for anyone who saw the game on TV - when the Rissho player took the ball round the Takigawa keeper and missed an open goal, my impression was that he was offside. But the flag stayed down, so it was a fatal miss. Anyway, two good semifinals, and I'm hoping that the final will be just as good today (without the penalties!)
