Player of The Season: 1 Maradona 2 Gullit 3 Futre 4 Sanchez 5 Van Basten 6 Butragueno 7 Valderrama 8 Rush 9 Matthäus 10 Michel

Overall, Maradona was still riding high from his WC exploits and now also a Scudetto winner. However, the Dutch were narrowing the gap.

In South America – they had a new star – Carlos Valderrama. However, Hugo Sanchez was the brightest star of them all. Bebeto was referred to as the new Zico! Lot´s was expected of him.

The Soviet Union (mostly Ukrainians) had a great team led by Zavarov, Belanov and Dassaev.

The Italians still couldn´t find the form the showed in 1982. Giannini was a great hope but disappointed so did Dossena. However, Baresi, Mancini, Vialli and a very young Maldini gave them hope for the future.

In Spain they had a two world stars by now – Michel and Butragueno.

In England most of the biggest names wanted to go and play on the continent. Hoddle had rosen to be a big star. He rejected FC Cologne in 1979, and he missed a golden opportunity to join Juventus in 1984 due to an injury. He was desperate to force a transfer by now. However, his name simply wasn´t as big in Europe as it was in England so he couldn´t choose what he wanted. John Barnes was voted Most Exciting Player and was set to leave Watford. He also wanted to go to the continent, and he even asked Dalglish to wait when Liverpool wanted to sign him. His move to the continent didn´t materialize. Lineker vs Rush was a big debate. They even pitted them up for a fight. Measured on seven strengths such as ball control, shooting, heading etc Rush won the contest 93-90.

The Dutch were a force by now led by Gullit. He was in fact way ahead of the others at this stage. However, Vanenburg was the player everybody was talking about.

there is an article in France Football Magazine

saying that Rabah Rabah Madjer would win the Ballon D'or 1987

The main issue is that Rabah Madjer and Paulo Futre would steal and fight for the main votes to be the maximum representative of FC Porto, champion of the European Champions Cup... of the European Super-Cup final against Ajax and the Inter-Club World Cup

So Gullit, Maradona and Hugo Sanchez could win because of this too, similar to Real Madrid when they had Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas, Gento, Kopa, SantaMaria , Rial, Del Sol or Real Madrid in 2024 Vini Jr... Jude... Rodrygo goes... Dani Carvajal, Toni Kroos etc.etc.etc..

    the own France Football ...

    would bet

    on Gullit winning

    by one point over

    Madjer

    Gullit 80 points
    Madjer ...79 Points ..
    Maradona .... 77 points
    Futre ....... 71 points ....

    Player of The Season: 1 Van Basten 2 Gullit 3 Maradona 4 Koeman 5 Rijkaard 6 Barnes 7 Sanchez 8 Matthäus 9 Mykhaylychenko 10 Vialli 11 Baresi 12 Paz 13 Hoddle

Overall, Gullit was – BY FAR – the talk of the town before The Euro´s. No European came close to matching Gullit. Everybody referred to Gullit as the best player in the world by now (even Franz Bekenbauer). Maradona could have kept his crown had Napoli not crumpled in the race for the Scudetto vs a formidable defensive AC Milan team. Baresi and Maldini were becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Van Basten was injured most of the season but came back and scored an all-important goal vs Napoli and his Euro´s we know all about. He was Player of The Season due to his three phenomenal games at the Euro´s but he was not yet the best overall even if Gullit was somewhat disappointing in The Euro´s.

The most sought-after player was Ronald Koeman. Manchester U made him an offer but he wouldn´t go England. He promised PSV one more season and which he would surely go to Italy, he said…. And then he went to Spain!

The biggest flops were probably Rush and Scifo. They were both utter disasters and their world-class status was now in doubt. Rush was shipped back to Liverpool and Scifo left Inter for around 25% of the fee Inter paid the year before.

As far as I´m concerned Glenn Hoddle was now – for the first time in his career – looked upon as a global superstar. Had it been possible, Johan Cruyff would have signed him for Barca.

In Spain Real Madrid won their third title in a row. They had assembled a formidable team – Buyo in goal and a back four of Chendo, Tendillo, Sanchis and Camacho. A midfield led by new sensation Michel together with Gallego, Vasquez and Gordillo. The team was spearheaded by Sanchez and Emilio “The Vulture” Butragueno. This was a sensational side even if Butragueno completely fell out of form during the second half of the season. However, they weren´t considered that great – why? They simply couldn´t win the European Cup!

    BEST XI: DASSAEV – AMOROS – BREHME – KOEMAN – BARESI – RIJKAARD – MATTHÄUS – GULLIT – MARADONA – SANCHEZ – VAN BASTEN.
    MICHELS (Manager)

Players always get "a million" points in various votes when they win The Euro´s, The World Cup or The Champions League even if they are not that good. That´s why The Ballon d´Or is flawed and that´s why my rankings are not The Ballon d´Or.

However, I would agree that I had Madjer too low for 1987. I will move him up a bit when the rankings are revised.

Your personal concept of great performances may certainly be wrong.

I haven't seen you providing evidence to support your choices so far until now.. only showing me that you know a littlebit about the historical context of that time. But scientifically, you are not effectively proving anything.. it seems like a list of personal taste or preference taken from Highlights at YouTube that you saw.

You are using the same wrong concept of privileging forwards or attacking midfielders, simply forgetting about classic midfielders and defenders.

I am watching several full games ..Diego Maradona in 1984/1985 season ..he was not better than Hans Peter Briegel ...in anything , Antonio di Gennaro and Pietro Fanna .

these awards really commit serious misdeeds or crimes... against players like Thuram... in 1996/1997 and 1997/1998 .

    Player of The Season: 1 Van Basten 2 Matthäus 3 Baresi 4 Maradona 5 Rijkaard 6 Bebeto 7 Gullit 8 Careca 9 Hagi 10 Papin 11 Romario

Van Basten was now the world´s greatest player. Johan Cruyff wanted him to join him at Barca. Ruud Gullit was still world-class. Look at the Champions League Final where he dismantled Steaua even if he played injured. Maradona wanted out of Napoli and join the Marseille revolution. He was promised a transfer if he won the UEFA Cup and so he did (with a little help from his friends, notably Careca). The promise was broken though so he had to stay. So, Marseille instead went and bought Chris Waddle from Tottenham for a 4,5M Pound fee – 1,3M more than the previous British Transfer record. One player not particularly happy about that was Gary Lineker as he had chosen to join Tottenham with the excitement of partnering Waddle in the Spurs attack. It was now time for Paul Gascoigne to step up. Rijkaard also wanted out of AC Milan due to Sacchi throwing him around in central defence, midfield and even at right back.

In the Bundesliga Klinsmann, Hässler and Thon were now the stand-out players. In France it was Papin and maybe Hoddle.

In Brazil Bismarck was emerging as the stand-out player at the FIFA World Youth Championship.

...and farewell to the eighties. By the end of the decade, much had changed in the game. The revolution heralded by the "Dutch" AC Milan (as evident in the 88 and 89 lists by Happie11) sent many old heroes to enjoy the deserved retirement. A few players (Maradona above all, but also Careca) could thrive all the ten years long, but it was clear that "classic football" era was over and a new kind of player had established himself as the dominator of world pitches: an athlete more than a performing artist, a destroyer more than a creator, quantity more than quality. Sad but inescapable.

I totally agree. However, I think it became even worse after the 2006 World Cup than it did when we entered the 90s. What I mean is that I still loved Michael Laudrup, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Nazario and Zidane as artists. Others such as Baggio, Figo, Iniesta and the young Cristiano at Man United came close. But since the 2006 WC there has not been a single artist. There has been players so good that they were almost inhuman but they were never artists. Only athletes. Today it has never been worse. I totally agree. I still love football though and I’m still looking forward to posting my rankings right up until today.

for me ! was Michel Platini the best player of the 80's not not not Maradona for sure . !

    But ...
but, as all the players suffered from many many injuries in the 80's, this dispute ends up from being very very balanced between about 100 players who were great symbols of the 80's .

    decade of great technique

    but at the same time

a very very violent, balanced, competitive, tougher decade...

a place where the football product in general
    was not well cared for

people responsible for the own product ... did not protect the big stars... from the extreme violence on the football pitch.

What catches my attention the most about Rabah Madjer

is that he is very good at juggling

    But

    at the same time

    very very technical and very very ambi-dextrous feet ;;

    Volleys

    Lobs

    Free-kick taking

    Crossing

    shooting

    swerve

    Tries first time shots

    passing skills

    always with guidance
of ambi-dextrous feet and vision ..

one mentality very very ambi-dextrous feet !

like Johan Cruyff, Andreas Brehme and Pelé etc..etc..etc.. !

    My opinion:
    1) Careca, H. Sanchez > Van Basten (as I have already stated a couple of times on this forum)
    2) Cerezo > Rijkaard and Cerezo >=Tigana
    3) Socrates > Hoddle, Giresse and Socrates >= Elkjaer

    Player of The Season: 1 Matthäus 2 Baresi 3 Maradona 4 Schilacci 5 Brehme 6 Gascoigne 7 Stojkovic 8 Papin 9 Sanchez 10 Waddle 11 Baggio

Overall, it was tight. Prior to the World Cup, Van Basten was surely still no. 1. Before the World Cup, the Internazionale President wanted to off-load Matthäus because he felt Matthäus was past his peak. Sure to say he changed his mind after the WC. Did Matthäus leapfrog Van Basten due to being the best player at the World Cup? He just might have by a whisker. Gullit was injured all season and clearly wasn´t match fit for the WC. However, he was still regarded as one of the very best. Van Basten too had a stinker at the WC. He wanted to drop deeper and become a new Cruyff. He failed and as Gullit said “Van Basten isn´t good enough to play like Cruyff judged by this showing”. There was uproar in the Dutch camp.

Gascoigne was immense. Scifo had a revival after two very poor seasons. So did Völler. Klinsmann was now one of the world´s best strikers. Barnes was world class in the domestic season for Liverpool but once again failed immensely to deliver for the national team and it seemed the English fans had had enough. Chris Waddle´s star was, however, becoming even brighter. Jürgen Kohler and Des Walker were starting to become two of the world´s best central defenders. Juventus wanted them both.

    BEST XI: ZENGA – BERGOMI – BREHME – BARESI – KOEMAN – GASCOIGNE – MATTHÄUS – GULLIT - MARADONA – VAN BASTEN – SANCHEZ
    ARRIGO SACCHI (Manager)

    GOLDEN BOY:

    1 CAFU (Sao Paolo)
    2 Lee SHARPE (Manchester U)
    2 Alan SHEARER (Southampton)
    3 Alen BOKSIC (Hajduk Split)

    Great notes - Thanks.

SOCRATES: Well of course it is a mistake that he is not present in my overview. Of course Socrates is in the team or at least on the bench. My mistake. It will be corrected when I revise the list. Surely.

Cerezo > Rijkaard. Maybe you´re right. I do not feel most Europeans believe your´re right but as my rankings should reflect a world-wide opinion you might be right. It sure is a close call. However, we can agree that they did not peak at the same time so in some years Cerezo > Rijkaard while in other years the opposite. Overall it´s close.

Careca/Sanchez > Van Basten. No I cannot agree on that! Not at all. But as my rankings should not be my own opinion but rather a world-wide opinion I´m sure we can find people who agrees with you and other people who agrees with me. In my rankings Van Basten will remain > Careca/Sanchez because I truly believe it is what most people around the world would say. However, as you can see in my rankings both Careca and Hugo are very high up for multiple years. So I centainly regard them as world-class.

    I disagree Frank 73 !

    Hugo Sanchez ...

    Hugo Sanchez :

    was a much better finisher

    than Van Basten

    Hugo Sanchez

    has about 250 acrobatic goals

    Volleys
    Bicycles-kicks
    Lobs
    First-time shots
    Shoots from Distance
    Free kick taker
    Flair Of Goal
    composure
    decision-making power
    positioning
    leadership
Off the ball " offensive only "
Off the ball " defensive " defensively he did nothing ;; and did not participate

    great
    center of gravity
    difficult
    for defenders
    to find and disarm him
    due to his smaller size
and offensive movements without the ball
    like Diego Maradona

when he was playing very very well and very inspired within the matches or during the Matches

    Hugo Sanchez

    was one of the best

    finishers

    of all time..

    same level

    Pelé

    Puskas

    C. Ronaldo

    Gerd Muller

    Romário

Hugo Sanchez when he was playing really really well in the matches

    sometimes

    he gave good final passes

he participated more in the build-up phase of the game..

    Drop Deeper more ++

    But..

    Hugo Sanchez

when he was playing really very very bad on the field

    for example

the games I watched in full by Hugo Sanchez

    Barcelona x Atletico Madrid 1982/1983 == Diego Maradona's Show

Ac Milan 5 vs 0 Real Madrid

Real 1 vs 1 Ac Milan

    1988/1989

Ac 2 Milan vs 1 Real Madrid 1988

    etc.etc..etc.

    he practically
didn't do anything during these matches,
he only made part of the shots on Target ratio % goal

    But
    he didn't contribute
    anything
    in the defensive part
    and didn't participate
in the phase or moment of game construction

    " Build Up phase "

    van basten, Marco
as a player he was much more complete than ..Hugo Sanchez easily . !

had more technique and skill than Hugo Sanchez easily.

Hugo Sanchez >>>> Van Basten in finishing skills Total ..package !

    Van Basten >>>>> Hugo Sanchez as a Total Footballer " center-forward "
