Might as well get this started, after yesterday’s disappointing result. 2027 U-20 World Cup will be for the 2007 (and rising 2008) class.
I will have a preview out of the next U-20 cycle over the next week or two.Attention will now turn to the U-17 World Cup. I should have my final roster prediction out towards the beginning of the week. I would expect that roster to be released Friday or the following Monday.— USMNTProspects (@ProspectsUsmnt) October 13, 2025
Doyle has a little write up on his blog. He's not super into the youth, but he does get some info direct from the MLS teams and others. So there's times he is ahead of other people. https://tacticsfreezone.substack.com/p/a-look-ahead-to-the-2027-us-u-20
Holy smokes, two posts about how a guy who already posts here constantly is gonna post something soon? Talk about building a personal brand!
He doesn’t have Klapija at all which feels like an oversight. He may not be number one but I’m certain he’s ahead of Adams.
Some really basic data: Mitrovic called up seven 2007s for the 2005/6 cycle (Gozo, Miller, Ramos, Glover, Lane, Pierre, Ukaegebu) and a single 2008 (Berchimas). This doesn't count guys called into separate 2006-heavy camps that were given the U20 title; I haven't counted those guys for list purposes since they didn't seem to be part of the "main" pool. I would guess there are a few other eligible guys who were on the provisional rosters for the finals and qualifying that we didn't know about.
Klapija had a recent incident at a camp. I don’t see him returning anytime soon. They banned three players who had a very minor incident at a U-16 camp for six months, and two I believe still haven’t returned (the kid who was the least culpable was allowed back after 6 months). This was much more serious.
I could see this cycle going a little better than the last. I worry that 2007 isn’t strong enough to make it a great cycle, but 2008 is a good year and 2009 has a number of top talents who should be capable of playing up and adding to this group. A lot will depend on coaching. Mitrovic staying would be huge.
thread After another disappointing quarterfinal elimination in the U20 World Cup, our 2025 cycle had come to an end.Now it's time to look to the future! Here I have made a thread of 33 players to watch out for that could be apart of the 2027 U20 cycle. Poor and confusing. "Justin Ellis has a bit of Jesus Ferreira to his game". Really? They look and play like twins.
It is an interesting read, sometimes I can't help but feel he is lost the forest for the trees though. Arguing that Cavan and Albert may not break through because they are in crowded positions that could be hard to break through belies the fact that both prospects still being consider U20, I guess, reserves, let alone U20 rosterable, would be an indictment of their development in '25 and '26 and '27. Neither Albert nor Cavan should be relevant to the U20's at all in their age 18+ seasons unless something has gone terribly wrong. I expect if Albert continues on this trajectory to see him in the senior shirt in 2026, pre or after the WC, Cavan may take longer, but even he should be national team relevant by the winter or spring of '27. If not, in both cases, something's been terribly wrong, this, is, as cliche as it may sound, a sign of what can be so annoying about the guy, which is an MLS blindered myopia. Albert is not behind the curve w/that depth chart, and it's absurd to even suggest the possibility to me. Cavan is more difficult to ascertain though I suspect he'll be in Europe if not this winter, than certainly by next summer. If Albert's the prospect the Dortmund rumors hav suggested, he should breakout on a similar trajectory as Reyna and Pulisic, during his age 16/17 season, which would be this one (I expect promotion this coming winter). Why on earth would he be U20 relevant if he's a Dortmund squad player in '26? Maybe he isn't, in which case, okay, but for now anyway, it sure as hell seems likely he'll be a regular with Dortmund by '26, certainly winter '26-'27 at the latest if he's anywhere near as good as the talk and video suggests.
I like the attacking options. Fields, Klapija and Ellis are forwards that will provide a variety of styles. Dills and Morales are solid attacking mids, with Dills able to slide to the 8. Will be interesting to see how Ramos slots in. Sullivan and Carrizo could also work their way into the picture. Wide attacking options will include Gozo, Hall, Berchimas, Albert and Johnson. That's really good depth at least at the attacking end. Some of these guys might progress fast enough that they will be featuring for the senior team rather than the U20s in the next cycle.
If Cavan is who we hope he will become he has to force himself into the picture unless he by-passes like our very best have done.
The CONCACAF U-20 World Cup qualifying tournament for the 2027 U-20 WC will take place next summer from July 25 to Aug. 9, 2026That’s actually not a lot of prep time. I’d imagine the team will need to be back up and running in early 2026 https://t.co/zejgbhCw9O— Brian Sciaretta (@BrianSciaretta) October 28, 2025
It’ll be right before he’s able to go to City as he’ll turn 18 shortly thereafter and probably move that January. Feels like he’ll be there unless he really takes off with the Union or elsewhere in the City football network and forces his way into the senior team discussion.
Not unexpected but Mitrovic is out BREAKING: The New England Revolution will name Marko Mitrovic their next head coach.Mitrovic is the United States U-20 head coach. Also led the USMNT at the Olympics last year. https://t.co/CXW4GzqKuW— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) November 4, 2025
Some new blood at the head coach level isn't the worst idea. It will be interesting to see what direction the Fed goes.
Expected to be old blood Gonzalo Segares. “Promoted” from U-17’s. Not official, but that’s been the speculation.
That's very... underwhelming. I think it would be beneficial to get another set of eyes on this generation. Segares has already seen this pool for several years so he has ingrained opinions. A new set of evaluators could see something/someone he's missed or be able to add some things he doesn't. Just bumping up the U17 coach seems complacent.... and we haven't earned complacency.
