Spain will certainly try to keep possession. I have doubts about whether Pedri will start; after a magnificent season, he has been strangely below his usual level in this tournament. I would put Fabián in his place again, at least for 55 or 60 minutes. Spain’s weak point is at full-back, so Lamine Yamal needs to attack Digne from the very first minute, and perhaps Nico Williams should also push forward and try to expose Koundé. I don't see Baena fitting into this match; besides, his form has dipped as the tournament has progressed. Rodri will shoulder the responsibility for the team and help the center-backs, who will have their hands full with the best attack in the world. Porro and Cucurella are in incredible form and full of confidence; they are capable of defending and supporting the wingers at the same time. France is the favorite—likely holding at least a 60/40 advantage—but if they want to beat Spain, they will have to play really well.
Just one small thing: it would never cross the Spanish national team coach's mind to play against France the way Paraguay did, or the way Uruguay did against Spain. If that were to happen, it might well be the last football match I ever watched in my life.

As before when you had some different ideas on my picks I think it's fine to disagree a little (these ratings you post are a mix of the calls of your whole panel in effect, or literally an agreed consensus anyway though of course) - here I would for example have again given higher to Pedri for his sub appearance (but don't doubt Titanlux saying he's been significantly better overall for Barcelona the past season), and for this game for example I think I'd have gone lower for Porro actually tbh. I really don’t think Argentina is going to beat England. Argentina has barely skated through each KO-stage round and they’ve not faced a team as good as England. And Argentina are nowhere near as good as they were in 2022 IMO. No longer having Di Maria is such a problem for them. Losing a player that good is virtually always unfortunate because the replacement is unlikely to be as good. But it’s worse than that for Argentina. They genuinely don’t even seem to have a wide player they’re willing to even put on the pitch. So they’re stuck playing with very little width. Messi moving to the wing was crucial to their comeback against Egypt, but I don’t think we can expect someone at his age to have the legs to do that all match. Absent width in their attack and with their midfielders not in particularly scintillating form, I just think they’re a really flawed team. They could try to play wingers that they’ve kept on the bench so far, but I think if you’ve kept players on the bench it’s probably not going to go well if you try to throw them in in the semifinals (both because if you had confidence in them, you’d have played them already, and because the WC SFs is a very deep pool to throw someone in). The only bright spot I see for Argentina is that Alvarez and Martinez got goals in the Switzerland game. They’d not been playing well in the tournament, but if they gain confidence from the end of the Switzerland game then that could improve Argentina’s attack significantly. The other thing with Argentina vs. England is that England just doesn’t seem likely to bottle things in a way that they so often do. They’ve actually shown a lot of grit and clutch play. They battled back from being behind late against Congo. Winning against Mexico while a man down for so long took a lot of mental fortitude. And they battled back against Norway as well. This England team seems to actually have a lot of mental toughness. Of course, Argentina has shown that as well, but I just really can’t get to a “England will probably choke” conclusion, given how this tournament has gone so far.
