I guess it's early to be speculating here but it doesn't seem outside the realm of possibility that Campbell won't be with this team by the time this tournament starts. Maybe Dortmund wants to keep him around. (Germany isn't in the Finals, so it may be that German clubs feel less pressure to release players.) Maybe he'll have skipped the level. No idea really, but whatever the case, it seems at least increasingly unlikely that he's there. That's probably good news for guys like Fletcher, Berchimas, and others I'm not awake enough to think of now.
I’m going to take a different stance. Campbell has shown nothing extra recently that suggests he won’t be released. He’s been average, at best, in his two appearances. He’s benefiting from 3 guys who would play over him being injured. We’ve seen how difficult it has been for Reyna to break in at Dortmund over the years. Campbell has not shown a fraction of what Reyna has at the same age. He’s likely going to continue to be like 6th on the depth chart for 3 spots the rest of this season, unless something changes drastically. Also, chances are that after a summer transfer window there will be new competition (potentially more competition too in terms of numbers ahead of him). There also could be other academy players who are younger that pass him, if he can’t assert himself as a clear first team level player between now and the end of the season. Maybe Dortmund wants to keep him around just because they don’t value the competition and he’s a player who has played first team games for them and they don’t see a need to release him to a youth competition. I think that’s very possible, but I’m not really seeing the arc that Campbell is a valuable player for Dortmund at the time of the tournament.
A few weeks too old for this forum, but have you ever seen Santiago Castañeda who seemingly eluded everybody?
Yeah, he’s a solid player, but really nothing special. Better than Edelman as a 6 for the 03’s and 04’s? I can buy it. Ready to compete seriously for the 6 on the USMNT? He’s not there yet. Exactly the type of player who would benefit from if the 03’s and 04’s currently had a YNT age group. He’s good enough to be a good player in that picture (which doesn’t exist for us but does for Mexico and plenty of Euro countries), but not good enough at 19 for the USMNT.
I'm wondering how is he relatively to escapees Vargas and Buck. Really unusual that all of them plus Edelman and Puskas basically the same age, and seemingly of about the same level popped up at the same position.
Have any of the usual Ussoccer media types commented on this? I haven't really seen anything outside the original report
I don't really understand the conversation. He didn't elude anybody. This player was from Tampa, played in the Tampa Bay Rowdies academy, signed a USL academy contract, and even got into a first team match some years ago. Decided not to sign a deal with a domestic club, but moved abroad to a Bund3 team. Performed well, so moved up to Bund2. This is how its supposed to work. But playing for a Bund3 or Bund2 team doesn't mean the USSF "missed" on his evaluation. You know????? Sometimes there are "late bloomers" within a pool. It doesn't mean anybody missed on the scouting evaluation when they were being considered for the U20WC or another youth squad. He's an 04. Our central midfielders at the 2023 U20 World Cup were Jack McGlynn, Daniel Edelman, Obed Vargas, Rokas Pukstas, etc. [The player that kind of totally vanished from that central midfield pool has been Alejandro Alvarado. He was on the CONCACAF Championships team, but didn't make the World Cup.] Those are all good players.
Santiago Castañeda was in the 3. Liga last year, and I believe his team was relegated. Someone posted that he looked really good; I'd love to understand how they got to watch a lot of 3. Liga matches. Has anyone actually even seen him at Paderborn? Or are people just thinking because Paderborn is in third, by next year, he'll be technically a Bundesliga player? 2. Bundi is not better than MLS, and has several aspects (particularly in athleticism) where it is way behind. I have no idea if this kid is any kid or not -- maybe he's amazing -- but has anyone commenting anywhere actually seen a a Paderborn game?
I have a lot of #USYNT content underway (interviews, analysis, etc) but I'll kick it off with a look at the U.S. U-20 team, where it stands with the World Cup next year, the player pool, and a projected rosterhttps://t.co/BI3CkGsuv7— Brian Sciaretta (@BrianSciaretta) November 1, 2024
I watched one of his recent games. Agree with your comment about 2. Bundesliga. It’s behind MLS. Maybe not by a lot (better tactically, but not as athletic or skilled), but it’s worse. He looked completely okay. Not much better or worse. He’s a late ‘04, so it wasn’t a poor performance, if you factor in his age, but he doesn’t look like a protagonist at the 2. Bundesliga level or look like a player with more than moderate level tools. A decent prospect, if you put the full equation together. Great or one of our best 04’s and requiring an immediate senior team call up? Didn’t see that.
I figure if one person had, it's you! I think any '04 doing pretty well at pro time makes them a prospect, but to your point, there's lots of '04s and '05 holding their own in MLS as well, but there's just a lot of prospects at this level.
Other than having David Vazquez as a winger this is what I was thinking right now; I would also use Norris to cover as a 4th CB to shave off a spot.
Agree with almost all of this but I do think there’s a chance Cavan Sullivan and Mathis Albert play themselves onto to this team (assuming no release issues).
I agree that he wasn't unknown. Being from the region I am seeing an extended pattern that others don't. I've seen multiple talented local players get upset with MLS Next clubs here. I don't know the details nor did I ask for them but there are two players I know personally who left MLS Next clubs developed somewhere else and have gone to Europe independently once they reached the right age. Santiago's interview sounds about right for the rest of those players. They just lost the passion when they were in the region's MLS Next programs. Indeed, I have yet to here of any player really pleased with their experience there and I know a lot of kids. So something is wrong but I don't think it extends beyond Tampa.

Looks like we saved our best team for the match against France. With just two days separating the matches this makes sense.
