I know there have been complaints about MLS 360, specifically complaints about the commercials. I'm watching the NBC Gold Zone on Peacock before the men's time trial starts. The whip-around coverage is NFL Red Zone style, not MLS 360 (so the hosts just jump in to let you know what they've just jumped to and then they run the actual event audio) but sure enough, they do commercial breaks as well.

They've been doing ad breaks DURING live action for at least the event I was watching (handball)

1.5 million for USA vs Zambia women's match
1.1 million for USA men vs France
4.9 million for USA Women vs Germany - most watched Women's Soccer Olympic match since 2012/

Note that this number comes from NBC and includes USA coverage along with all forms of streaming and possibly also the replays of the games.

A while ago I argued with someone that Olympics soccer ratings would be higher than Copa America and I was very wrong.

USA Women's basketball vs Japan 3.0 million
US Men vs Serbia 10.9 million - NBA finals level numbers.

What's the source for those numbers btw?

I'm surprised you thought games played in the middle of a working weekday between age group teams would get higher ratings than games played by the full NT during peak hours.

The basketball was played at midday on a Sunday with no other competition so 10 million isn't surprising especially if they included the streaming numbers.

For Olympics the source is SportsMediaWatch. I'd use SpoilerTV but they break it down into useless segments like USA PrimeTime and USA Late Night etc.

Good point on basketball not being quite as impressive as it seems since NBA finals probably also had people watching on streaming but those numbers were not included.

"Sunday’s “primetime” coverage of the Paris Summer Olympics averaged a combined 41.5 million viewers on the NBC family of networks (per Nielsen fast-nationals and Adobe Analytics), a figure that encompasses both a live afternoon window from 2-5 PM ET and a primetime encore — up 91% from the first Sunday of the COVID-delayed Tokyo Summer Games three years ago (21.7M)." SMW

    So we're taking big numbers.

Pandemic or not, when the Olympics are held in Europe or the Western Hemisphere, viewership numbers are generally higher because of the time difference. When the Olympics (or World Cup) are held in Australia or East Asia, the live events take place in the middle of the night, for the most part. I haven't watched anything from Paris in primetime, because I can catch the competition in various sports live in the morning or afternoon. Then again, I'm retired, so I've got some time on my hands!

Speaking your mind is a dangerous thing in today's world. The interesting thing is just like your comment here (even though it's made in jest... I think) most don't respond to the point they disagree with but attack the messenger.

I'm joking. The reason that MLS, indeed soccer, needs figures like Lalas and Twellman is that it needs controversy to grab media attention. In that sense Lalas, Twellman and their ilk are an asset to the league and to the sport.

It's frustrating for those who follow the sport that we can't have a more intelligent discussion at the national level.

Not sure where to put this, it's definitely TV and MLS related though:

Max gets a lot of schtick from long time MLS fans. He's not everyone's cup of tea. The work that he and the other long time MLS announcers have done to help bring the game out of the wilderness and into our lives nearly everyday of the year now in US needs to be honored and respected.

I am now an LAFC fan, have been since day one.

We’ve got an anchor here in DC who’s accent only comes out when she’s saying her name, too.

It's 14 24/7 channels plus ESPN+, so not really surprising. Probably needs to be considered like a hyper-focused cable subscription for someone who wants nothing but sports.

They should market to college sports fans. If you supplement it with free OTA NBC and CBS, you can get nearly all P4 conference football games and much of what's outside P4.
